Re: ER(E) with a disability

The Three-Month Update, or I Live In Such Luxury: This is the longest I've been "unemployed" with a normal lifestyle. I have been binge-reading stuff here and on blogs the past few days, and hit a bit of an epiphany this morning. It's been 3 months like this. I've been under my budget eve...

Re: ER(E) with a disability

Yeah, I'm not sure. I've always gotten a 3.5 or a 4... My work friends have also gotten 3s, generally. I think, honestly, I'm riding on that past performance. I think management does like me from being above average for my first 4 years at the company. Replacing someone with that much internal knowl...

Re: ER(E) with a disability

How did you decide the work performance is below average? There's a yearly performance review at my work, and I got the results in early January. It's rated out of 5, but really, no one gets a 5. 3 is "good" and average, and I got a 2.5 which is "performing below expectations."

Re: ER(E) with a disability

For the job - you’re probably performing better than you think you’re despite what any performance review states. If you’re the workhorse / task-master type then you’re valuable. Layoffs are reserved for middle-managers. For the fitness idea…try long walks with podcasts, documentaries, music, or ev...

Re: ER(E) with a disability

I just got delivered another heartbreak that things are going to take longer than I hoped. I thought I would be back to starting to put my life back together in March, but alas, it doesn't seem to be the case. I have no particular estimate now. But, a few mildly interesting updates occurred in the m...

Re: ER(E) with a disability

My "Finding Freedom To" I read both Slevin's and AnalyticalEngine's journals yesterday in trying to find inspiration to get out of my slump, and both spoke of their "Finding Freedom To." I've never had trouble with a "Finding Freedom To" before now. I only lost it beca...

Re: Slevin's journal

Slevin, I was updating myself on the journals I've watched, and the first thing I saw was your freedom to post. Nothing new, but a very good reminder for me right now. I know my freedom to, I wrote a whole journal entry about it, but I also do have to lube that gear and get the habit rolling again. ...

Re: ER(E) with a disability

Oh no... I've fallen to getting too used to the plump corporate lifestyle. My last day of labor was December 22nd. I haven't resigned yet, as before I decided to resign, I was trying to take a month off to deal with these health issues. But, I'll be putting a meeting on my manager's calendar a week ...

Thanks all for more considerations about the health insurance. I'll ask around and keep looking into it, and I'll let you all know how it shakes out.

Re: ER(E) with a disability

I think where I've had luck is with startups -- especially since I have a local advantage of already living close to Silicon Valley. I had an opportunity to work on a car brand's website back when they were in a very big hiring stage and the website was basically an avenue for jobs. But, their engin...

Re: ER(E) with a disability

Good to see an update, that's a sizeable stash. Definitely buys time to figure things out. A couple thoughts on resigning: 1. Any chance once you give notice, you're immediately terminated? Is that a reason to wait until after 1/1? 2. Any benefits to staying employed through 12/31? Vesting or annua...

Re: ER(E) with a disability

Today, I am supposed to be writing my self-review for this year in work. I am instead here devouring ERE and adjacent content. I think I did the exact same thing last year, if I'm remembering correctly. Perhaps it's time for this journal to become active again, because I have decided to resign . I'l...

Re: ER(E) with a disability

Hi folks, It's been another 9 months. I don't have a large update to share here, just a few things... My health became worse than it ever did after that last post. I've been returned from disability leave, but I'm not feigning confidence that this is going to last again. I'll be fine for a few month...

Re: Setting up a website - ERE style

I agree that a static website using something like Hugo with posts written in Markdown are the most resilient and cheapest. Fundamentally, you can always read the files since they're basically plain text rather than parsing through some kind of template language that may not exist in 10 years. (This...

Re: Fox's Journey: And Onto the Sunlight!

I have to say that I also recommend in-person. It's a less competitive job market and it's more likely to lead to faster learning. It's not impossible the other way around, especially since you do have a college degree, but I personally wouldn't do it any other way. The first 6 months at my current ...

Re: ER(E) with a disability

Hey folks, here's a new year's update. My situation isn't as dire as it was when I last posted in November. I've been doing the treatments, I've taken a lot of time off of work, and I've been balancing the budget throughout this. How am I? Better. I'm on a new treatment which is extremely difficult ...

Re: ER(E) with a disability

A lot has happened in the past 24 hours but I'm also in a lot of pain right now, so I'd like to give a clear update while still being succinct. I was betting on a new treatment these past few recaps. It was a complete disaster. It doesn't work, but an advantage is it doesn't cause permanent damage. ...

Re: ER(E) with a disability

I have a quick update because little else matters. My health has all taken a hit far earlier than expected. I will probably have to resign from my job with few job prospects by around March 1st (shortly after receiving my bonus). I expect to have $360k over my accounts. I won't qualify for any kind ...
