Re: ERE Motivation:

DIY academic tenure in a geographic location of my choosing. I was interviewing for tenure track positions at large research institutions. I found out that I was also competing with established professors using open rank job calls as leverage to get pay raises at their home institutions with no inte...

Re: mooretrees journal

Down booties go a long way in dry spaces for keeping feet warm as a potential alternative. I basically live in mine all winter with a thin pair of socks to help wick away moisture. This was essential for winter van/snow/yurt camping in the snow. Boots are great for outdoors, but constantly cleaning ...

It is a great feeling to rekindle the love of bicycle riding. I felt the same years after getting burned out racing bikes in college. Now I say to myself: "This is no longer a priority in my life, I no longer specialize in it, so relax and enjoy the wind and/or the dirt".

Re: Packing cubes vs plastic bags or tote bags

I do compartmentalized packing for back/bikepacking, for keeping travel art supplies in order, for keeping documents semi-waterproof, keeping our van tidy etc. I do not pack everything in this way for trips, but stuff that is specialized like ego mentioned, or emergency kits stay in a bag ready to g...

Minor update after discussion with EcoMMG. The sound tracks of the mF mind/cadence are exemplified by the manic forward momentum music of The Mars Volta. They are an excellent mix of Prog/punk/emo/noise/metal. Thier music should be consumed as an entire album (not for everyone). Tension and release....

Heh, yep! You planning on learning electric or poke? I have read about poke tattoos when reading about making inks. This is the extent of my electric knowledge (watching this video): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DcHSd-SXnTk If you want a merit badge tattoo of a skill that you have earned enough ...

@AE and @theanimal - the time blocks are more or less observed time data. I did not track everything religiously during my ere-lite sabbatical experiment or my current job. I like to do creative work and learning in the morning, technical writing and programming in the afternoon, and have an exercis...

My sketchnotes from rereading ERE book and some posts, watching some of @jacobs lectures, and applying to my WOG. Enjoy!

I still fall running, but as you suggested, you can learn to roll to dissipate the energy of the fall. I usually fall on not so technical trails when I am not thinking about the present moment, but going off in my head working on something. Then some asshole root decided to grow there for the last 3...

I am eager to also see some pics and hear about bus adventures. My SIL has her two boys now back in school and her description of your confusion about what to do with time is very similar.

Always really interesting and inspiring to read your monthly updates. I just can't express how motivating your journal is. Thank you both for such kind words! It made my day! A+ for exploring a new area. :). Looks pretty. An important MTB lesson is you have to "ride your ride". I walk stuff all the time. Your bike looks dusty and happy to be out of the stable.

Started learning how to map data using QGIS.
QGIS also has a good python interface if you want to combine your Python skills for some mapping project.

I'm going to try putting one loaf into a paper bag after a brief cooling off time to see if that keeps the curst a little softer. We use a large resealable/reusable food grade silicone bag for exactly this purpose. It keeps the loaf fresh for up to 5 days. They are easy to turn inside out and clean...

https://i.imgur.com/2bz5pk2.jpg I will write more about the idea behind this in my August update, but we wanted to extend the workspace surface in our garage/workshop for electronics projects with some less dusty storage. For this project I used some scrap wood from our van build, a left over garag...

You can add an old blanket/beach towel in-between the bikes before stacking them to offer more protection for the bike components rubbing on each other. A separator blanket will also help keep the pedals from getting caught when removing the top bike at your destination. Put the larger bike in first...

Endurance sports are addicting. This comes along with lots of different gear to move through every conceivable environment or condition. I am guilty of this on many accounts... bikes tended to be the worst though in the past. The joke is what is the proper number of bikes to own? A: N + 1...where N ...
