Re: Easier said than done - Melo's path towards freedom

Regarding exercising while sick: Are you feeling well enough to walk around the block? Coming back from being sick is hard, but even small bits can add up and get your motivation levels back. Yes, I'm going for a bunch of walks, although usually just short ones. I'll probably be back at working out...

Re: Germany Meetup

I'm definitely interested in joining.
Like mentioned I'm in Bavaria but tend to travel between southern Austria, and BW / NRW a lot.
Since I can move my schedule is pretty flexible I probably could also travel somewhere further away

Re: Easier said than done - Melo's path towards freedom

January Update Let's start with the boring stuff: # Money Income: ~2.286€ Expenses: ~1.194€ Other income sources: ~115€ This was mostly from selling stuff I had lying around at my parent's place. There's more of that but I only can take a couple of things with me whenever I visit. I'm not sure if I ...

Re: Easier said than done - Melo's path towards freedom

May I be curious and ask how you can rent in Germany for 200€ per month? I am looking for ways to reduce our housing cost in a way acceptable to both my partner and myself. Even a 12 m² student room with shared bathroom and kitchen facilities is >400€ over here, not allowed for a non-student to liv...

Re: Easier said than done - Melo's path towards freedom

Looks like you're paying 872 / 2,286 = 38% of your income in rent, and 872 / 1,136 = 77% of your expenses. Spending 1,136 of a 2,286 income it takes about 25 years to save 25x your yearly expenses. If you work five days instead of four for 450 additional income it takes 18 years. Say you are 30 yea...

Re: Easier said than done - Melo's path towards freedom

I read through my past journal and decided to give a bit more detailed update and go back to the style I had at the beginning. So here it goes: # Money Income: ~2286€ after taxes Estimated expenses: 1.136€ Estimated savings rate: ~48% Savings: 13.820 on savings account (+ ~3.5k in checking) ### Inco...

Re: DebtSlaveNoMore's Journal

I just read through the whole journal and wanted to thank you for all the updates over the years. As someone who started in tech not too long ago your journey is really inspirational! Did you think about gradually reducing work hours for the golden handcuff situation? Start by going down to 4 days a...

Re: Easier said than done - Melo's path towards freedom

If you had to make a plan today what would it be? It can always be refined later. Well, the plan right now is to get a one-on-one meeting with my boss and talk about working remotely from Austria. We did touch on that point before I started, but I didn't like the idea of working with a team and peo...

Re: Easier said than done - Melo's path towards freedom

Update from another 6 months later. Nothing changed yet in the apartment situation. It's still only a bed, dinner table, and the kitchen that was already there. I don't feel I need much more now except maybe a bookcase. I don't plan to stay here for that much longer, so I don't mind. Savings are sti...

Re: Easier said than done - Melo's path towards freedom

Update from like half a year later. I'm still in the somewhat too big apartment. It's still pretty much empty. For furniture I got a bed and desk with some chairs (plus the kitchen that was already here) I don't feel like I need much more. Sometimes a second desk would be nice, especially when worki...

Re: Obtaining a Second Passport

For EU countries it often depends on the background of the second citizenship. If you immigrate you tend to renounce the old one. If you get it by birthright it's often fine. I have both Austrian and German citizenship due to my parents, which is worked without problems. Although there isn't really ...

Re: A Life Worth Living (shelob's journal, Gen Z, Germany, currently in the Armed Forces)

Nice to hear that everything is going well! I'm going to steal the lentils in a mason jar idea. That looks like something even I can't kill  About studying abroad: I did the same. I did my masters in the UK, although at that time Covid and Brexit hit... So if you have any questions about it, fe...

Re: Easier said than done - Melo's path towards freedom

Happy Holidays to all of you! @scott I definitely count all of it as a success even if it looks negative on paper. I full-heartedly agree with your last sentence. Being able to make those decisions is what I'm really working towards, not a number. It also reminds me of a quote I heard a while ago: &...

Re: Easier said than done - Melo's path towards freedom

This will be an odd update, but a lot has changed since I posted here the last time. I lived with my parents for the last ~5 months, helping out at the stable for a couple of hours every other day. I have to admit that the physical work was a welcome change from the office job, even if I dreaded it ...

Re: Easier said than done - Melo's path towards freedom

Long time no see! Well the last months weren't the easiest and there wasn't much going on when it comes to ERE, other than my savings growing. I'll just start with the big topic. I just quit my job. Or rather, I'll be leaving my current job at the end of the month. Main reason here was that everythi...

Re: Garden Log

I got a bunch of flower pots and a nice big shelf from a neighbor. What would be some good starter spices/herbs/vegetables I could grow indoors? Preferably something that's hard to kill  I don't want to produce a lot of food. It's more of a way to get some useful decoration in my pretty empty a...

Re: What is your ERE housing score?

0 (it's 2.5km but I always walk) + 0 (walking and it's across the street) + (330/100) = 3.3
If it wasn't for the employee apartment I would be way higher. Rent would go way up (+500$ minimum) and distance to work too, which would lead to taking the subway regularly.

Re: Jupiter's Intro

Lately I have been writing a lot and try to get somewhat decent at drawing. To your second question, nope! I have so many projects and ideas I want to work on, but the full-time job just takes too much time and energy. I am playing with the idea of going part-time, simply because I don't need to ext...

Re: Easier said than done - Melo's path towards freedom

January Update: - Save 25k (7k) The drop in the market pretty much got rid of all the profit from the last year. My savings rate this month was 80% and with some money from selling more trading cards on the side I managed to invest 2.000€ this month. I got lucky and bought at what looks like the bot...
