Re: Easier said than done - Melo's path towards freedom

Small update. I've spent a bunch of time reading the last couple days. I still have a stack of books that were presents from christmas last year that I never got to read / was not in the mood to read. So I now have the goal to read one of them every month. For this month it was Dune, I don't think I...

Re: Easier said than done - Melo's path towards freedom

So here are the goals for the next 12 months: - Save 25k € This shouldn't be a big problem considering my current spending habits, but I still want to track it just for the fun of it. - Find something I like to do I still have the problem that I don't really know what I should do with my free time, ...

Re: Easier said than done - Melo's path towards freedom

October marks the end of my first year of the work life. I always was into personal finance, but with uni and studying abroad, most of my savings usually went to cover tutition fees, rent, or other expenses. So I see October 2020 as the start of my ERE journey, even if I discovered ERE a bit later. ...

Re: Is Software Development/ Programming Oversaturated?

I think there is a huge competition for the "flashy" jobs in tech, like working for FAANG or similar companies. Everything not so sexy is still in need of loads of people. I'm in a public institution, working as a software dev / data scientist, pay is good (especially for someone with no p...

Re: Easier said than done - Melo's path towards freedom

End of month update. Just got my paycheck and put another 1960€ into my investments. Getting me to total of 27k in savings. I actually managed to barely hit the 80% savings rate this month. Having 1.33€ left in the budget  It was kinda fun, especially when I had to make it work somehow in the l...

Re: seanconn's journal

Other than the already mentioned options, could you maybe rent out your car a couple of times a month? I'm not sure about the logistics, taxes, insurance, etc. but I guess that would be one option to keep the car and cover the expenses. A quick Google search came up with Turo which looks like AirBnB...

Re: Easier said than done - Melo's path towards freedom

It's a savings rate I can only dream of at the moment. Still hoping to crack the 42% on yearly average. I think the biggest part for me is just not having a car and living in a super small / cheap apartment. So I'm sticking with the "broke" college student lifestyle  I assume it will...

Re: Easier said than done - Melo's path towards freedom

I guess it's time for another financial update. With the salary for august coming in, I was able to put anohter ~1950€ into my portfolio. That brings me to a total of: - 5000€ Emergency Fund - 20.500€ Investments Total: 25.500€ The budget approach was more or less a success. Success in the sense tha...

Re: Easier said than done - Melo's path towards freedom

Thanks for stopping by sky! For now, I am pretty happy with my lifestyle, I don't really restrict myself much, most of the things just come naturally to me. With the budgeting and tracking, it is more for me to have a "tripwire" to see if something goes completely out of hands, but I won't...

Re: Easier said than done - Melo's path towards freedom

Update on the 4-week "challenge" I kinda had the same problem as the last time, work and a quick "emergency vacation" (My uncle got married and I thought it was a month later than it actually was :D) made me forget about posting here. In general, the 30min of moving around every ...

Re: Easier said than done - Melo's path towards freedom

Another month is over so here's a quick update on my savings. Emergency Fund: 5000€ Investments: 18.300€ Last week I took some time to skip through the books recommended for each Wheaton level, I got through everything recommended for levels 1 to 3. I skip through most of it because I couldn't find ...

Re: A Life Worth Living (shelob's journal, Gen Z, Germany, currently in the Armed Forces)

Well then, welcome in my humble abode, and lemme guess, you served in the infantry, right? :) The base focused on army radio, but after 5 weeks of basic training they assigned me to the headquarter building as a secretary or somthing like that. It meant that I was in direct report to the highest ra...

Re: Easier said than done - Melo's path towards freedom

So somehow the week of vacation and a lot of work before that made me forget about my own 4 week challenge. Here is the late update and what I plan to do for the next 4 weeks. Last challenge: - Write down 10 ideas everyday This is now implemented in my daily todos and I'm slowly filling a little not...

Re: A Life Worth Living (shelob's journal, Gen Z, Germany, currently in the Armed Forces)

Hey there, how did I not see that you started a journal :o Anyways, I'll add some of my thoughts to your current situation. The army is a great way to get you towards ERE. I considered that too, but 6 months of compulsory service (sometimes having a second citizenship can have it's downsides :? ) ki...

Re: My Three Phase Journey Toward ERE

Hey, nice read and good luck on your journey. I can't give any recommendations on investment books, but for business I loved Naval's Almanack, it's a bit focused on IT and kinda philosophical, but a pretty good read, you can also get it for free on their website, or just listen to the 4h podcast on ...

Re: Easier said than done - Melo's path towards freedom

Late update, but I was on vacation last week so there isn't much to add. I'm not super into traveling for the sake of seeing new places, so vacation meant visiting my parents for a week, which also has the advantage of being pretty cheap (about 50€ for the train and other than about 20€ for food I d...

Welcome :D I'm also a UK graduate (2020) although I moved back to Germany after my studies. Living at home after graduation is a good idea, also try to not increase your lifestyle too much once you get your salary. Keep living like a student, but earning like an employee and your savings will grow r...

Re: Easier said than done - Melo's path towards freedom

Small update on the PhD front. My current job is closely related to the - quite big - university in the city, and my boss offered me to do a PhD at my current job. So once I have an interesting topic he would help me get a professor to be my supervisor and also be on the board of supervisors in gene...

Re: Easier said than done - Melo's path towards freedom

On another note, another month is over and I thought I did terrible when it came to my spendings. Lot's of work meant that I cooked less and ressorted to buying food at the office more than I would have liked to. But somehow I still managed to only spend ~515€ in the last month. With this and my sal...

Re: Easier said than done - Melo's path towards freedom

Hey, yeah you're points make a lot of sense. I think the whole "fame" part doesn't really matter for me. I really don't care about the title, that part would only be for my family, and make my parents stop asking if I consider doing a PhD  All about it being my "best years of lif...
