Re: ERE is Path to Meaningful Life - MMM style FI year 4

Hey AxelHeyst , it is going good so far. Our house is laid out nicely that they have the basement and their own space. We turned the basement family room into my son's room and then my daughter took the large bedroom. There is a basement washroom/shower they use exclusively. My son is a on-site HD m...

Re: ERE is Path to Meaningful Life - MMM style FI year 4

That was one heck of a sustained absence from the forums here, I find when the summer season hits I am 100% outdoors mode. Now that the darker and wetter days of winter come back in the PNW I gravitate back to reading books, spending time on the forums and visiting blogs. It has been one heck of a r...

Re: ERE is Path to Meaningful Life - MMM style FI year 4

Mountain Frugal pretty much covered it off for my approach. I spend most of my time in the alpine which thankfully cools just enough 8-10C at night to sleep comfortably in just my t-shirt. When it is hot I leave my sleeping bag unzipped and just sleep directly on the pad. Haven't had too many issues...

Re: ERE is Path to Meaningful Life - MMM style FI year 4

Hi MountainFrugal, the island is an awesome place that I cherish every day possible. If you come back there is more than enough riding to blow your mind. Online friends who sold everything to become business "nomads" spent the winter here on the island and they did an amazing job featuring...

It is now May and things are rolling along nicely. Loads of cycling, hiking and trail running going on out here. Focusing on the garden which is growing extremely well right now with a good balance of heat and rain. Expenses continue to be dialled the best I have done consistently since starting the...

Re: Touring, Bikepacking, and Long-Distance Cycling

A new personal record on Sunday - 46+ miles. Way to go WRC , did you make any major changes to the bike to improve your distance? Be sure to get enough fuel into your body at least once every hour so you don't bonk when you are still 20 miles from home our your destination. :D For other pack setups...

Cool mindset to allow yourself to experience failures/problems and see how you overcome them. As I think of the current supply chain and shipping issues globally right now I would imagine the price of used shipping containers has sky rocketed.

Thanks @AxelHeyst ... investing in myself via getting outdoors is key. https://www.chrisistace.com/health-benefits-of-being-outdoors/ @RoamingFrancis , Vancouver is a short ferry ride across the Salish Sea from us. It is a stunning major metropolitan city against the backdrop of the North Shore moun...

Re: ERE is Path to Meaningful Life - MMM style FI year 4

The month continues to tick each day away while we enjoy our reduced spending. Got 2 nice insurance rebate cheques as our govt car insurance Corporation had reduced costs during the shutdown of covid last year and returned it as nice rebate to drivers. We got $482 between the wife and myself of whic...

Re: ERE is Path to Meaningful Life - MMM style FI year 4

We have just gone through a nice stretch of very hot and sunny weather and best part is I seeded the entire garden before it arrived. It has now been 8 days and pretty much all my seeds have sprouted, very excited to see my expanded garden full of green awesomeness. Looking forward to the fresh food...

It feels good to put in the work and see it through, welcome to the FI world and your new free time to enjoy life. Don't be hard on yourself with your choices and take the time to find yourself. Breaking out of the work cycle of society and consumerism is very tough but possible. Congrats

Have you gotten out on any longer rides or modified the bike any further?

I like how you have analyzed the fishing, that is the same approach I take to all my cycling and backpacking. The pros far far far outweigh any cons.

Well done Vietnam on properly managing Covid19! Has the general public been extremely supportive to achieve this unified with public health measures? Great to see that Plumeria thriving on the patio. Big fan on the Monstera plants, hope those do well for you. Funny you mention the Rosemary as I have...

AxelHeyst... I think your final comment just above is where you now get it, love it... "I am enough"

and then in the comment above it "its ok to let it go"

Re: The Education of Axel Heyst

My total approach to ERE and why I have gravitated back towards the concepts discussed is summarized as simplicity. I dread over complicating things and then the stress/anxiety that our current societal norms manifest. Living a simpler life, focusing on being outdoors, lower my cost of living, devel...

The beauty of having good personal systems in place is that there isn't too much to chat about. April is rolling along nicely and expenses are on track nicely. Lots of cycling between my mountain bike and my gravel bike, most likely do some regional quick overnight backpack trips in the next few wee...

The process you are putting in place for your excess things is an important one and a smart way to do it. Organizing is just a way to deal with things and doesn't help us manage our consumption. By getting rid of it all, even temporarily in boxes or bags packed in another room, enables us the abilit...

@ertyu the stand is just for washing, cleaning/lubing my chain and other maintenance. My bike just leans against a wall in my shed locked up to my other bikes any other time when not in use. @axelheyst our old vehicles already have a sunk "carbon cost" and are typically the best choice we ...
