Re: Consciousness as memory encoder

Hey, some actual scientists came up with a similar idea. https://sites.bu.edu/ctcnlab/files/2022/05/Consciousness-as-a-Memory-System-Budson-Richman-Kensinger-in-press.pdf Even used some of the same language. "If consciousness is a system for memory encoding and retrieval" (pg 26) https://t...

whereas kegan3 subordinates their identity to the group-identity ("I am what they say I should be"). Kegan3 seems to have a lot of problems doing personality testing due to an inability to identify whether an impulse comes from themselves or their "tribe", e.g. "Of course I...

k3 and k4 grammar

k3 - I am angry. k4 - I have anger (about something). k3 - I am Catholic. k4 - I hold Catholic (beliefs). I wonder what change might be accomplished simply by teaching the former(k3) is improper grammar. If you possess a baseball as an object, you wouldn't say "I am baseball". If you posse...

Re: Rebuilding Atrophied Desire (to win)

This works for me. I kick back, relax and intend to do nothing forever. I explicitly don't daydream about the future, or mull over how the world might need to change. Everything is perfect and fine, nothing needs to be changed, and laying here completely relaxing until the end of time is the best th...

Re: Getting to know the big fish better than they know themselves

It helps to consider what constraints the big fish are under, and game out their corresponding actions. An old example. In the dot.com boom of the late 90s, everyone was shoveling money into tech mutual funds. The fund managers had to invest that money, or not be a manager. Even if they knew better,...

1st, 2nd, 3rd person etc. are not the perspectives or paradigms of development models. Perspectives/paradigms are ways of thinking. They are, from a linguistic standpoint, near endless, like nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs. In English, at least, we can convert nearly any word into one of those, li...

Re: Tasting the Pickle: Ten flavours of the meta-crisis...

Maybe not an expansion pack, but a patch. Something along the lines of an adverb or adjective, but to modify entire statements. To indicate what perspective or state of mind a statement is coming from, add the suffix -zu to indicate the perspective. Happyzu - the statement is your perspective from a...

ERE2 is an adaptive attempt to avoid survival-mode. Part of humanity's problem now, is we've always been in survival mode. We've convinced ourselves that all this production/consumption is necessary to survive. Most consumers feel they are barely surviving. ERE1 is a solution of getting out of that...

Blue thinkers would like to be Green, so they mimic Green but ultimately cannot remove their clannishness/ ego from the equation, Yes, most "Greens" are actually Green Blues - Blues that have taken on Green values (I'm not sure a true Green would approve of cancel culture). The "bad ...

Re: Obesity-A Result of Environmental Contaminants?

Epigenetics play a part, too. Children of famine survivors are more likely to store up fat reserves and become obese. Starting in the mid 20th century, entire generations of women "starved" themselves by dieting, tricking their genetics to believe famine conditions prevailed. The after-eff...

The brain seems to recalibrate what it considers dangerous vs. safe. Extremely dangerous, yet ordinary things, like doing anything near or on a busy street, or traversing a flight of stairs, become "safe" (our emotional response, anyway). Relatively safe, yet unknown things, are still &quo...

I think the impulse behind the idea was to find a replacement for "The Job" which wouldn't cause the average job-haver to significantly restructure their beliefs. Modern jobs feel a lot like modern romantic partnerships - providing a lot of different psychological services in one package. ...

In terms of Have, people can be split onto Hoarders, who believe they control the things they have, and Minimalists, who believe they are controlled by the things they have, similar to the difference between "freedom to" and "freedom from".

Believing Humans strive to ensure their actions and beliefs give them the certainty of being correct. If something can be demonstrated to provide more certainty of correctness than their current actions and beliefs, it will be widely adopted. Distracting Most all humans spend a fair amount of time s...

Re: Consciousness as memory encoder

Ah, ok. Like dark matter. The only way we know how to uncover insights into matter is to subject it to experiments and close observation. How are we going to figure out dark matter if we're unsure if it's even a particle, let alone get it into a lab and subject it to experiments? If our brains were ...

Re: Consciousness as memory encoder

I just realized we're talking about two slightly different things. There's a difference in pattern creation and pattern organization. Pattern creation must necessarily be holarchical. The mind either has to integrate or differentiate previous patterns to create a new one. But It can then go on to fo...

The mammalian brain seems to have a evolved to recognize certain aspects of reality such as grouping, brightness, and size/distance relations. It's also good at reading expressions on other mammals (even babies can do this). Indeed, optical illusions screw with this pattern matching. There seems to...

Re: Consciousness as memory encoder

I'm wondering if holarchy isn't more map than territory. The mind seems to form a web of associations, and we tend to think about that messy web as a holarchy, when it may not be. For instance, our mental concept of "foot" might be more closely associated in our minds with "shoe"...

I'm thinking that what I'm calling consciousness, you might be calling awareness or attention. On dreaming The supposition is, the brain has a memory encoding mechanism that ensures new memories formed meet a standard, so they can be efficiently processed (by such processes as the simulation engine)...
