Re: Avalok's Journal
Had my shoes resoled this month and have been amazed by the difference in comfort. I think I could have justified resoling them when purchased, but I managed to get >2 years out of them. It cost about as much to resole as it did to buy the boots used, so will be interesting to see how long these ...

Re: Avalok's Journal
It has been a while since I updated on here. Partly due to delaying it each month, partly because I stopped wanting to share certain things on here, but had little else to write about.

Re: Avalok's Journal
Thank you, yes the lack of thought that I now need to consider regarding our next fixed term and the trajectory for interest rates is really nice. Like you, I hadn't appreciated how much space this was taking up. Good to know you had a similar experience and that the following months brought what ...

Re: Avalok's Journal
Okay so, at the start of June we paid off the mortgage, an anticlimactic affair, sat in the bank waiting for the payment to be processed, and then we were done. In the time since it has felt like a weight has been lifted, though oftentimes I have not thought about it. I think it'll begin to sink in ...

Re: guitar player's journal
Congratulations on receiving your passports, and also on the job offer (application). Always a bit silly needing to do stuff like that, but if the organization does not have a process to bypass the usual steps, it must be done. I think there should always be a fast-track process to keep valuable ...

Re: Avalok's Journal
That's amazing! IIRC, you've been there a year this summer, and I believe you initially thought it might take longer than that before paying it off. We will have done it in four years; one year is mad haha!
Anyway, that's super cool. Will keep an eye out for the update to say you've done it

Re: Avalok's Journal
Hey, thank you both for the advice! @guitarplayer Justin is a legend! When I was learning as a kid and later teenager I used his videos a lot. His older videos have a sense of nostalgia now; very early-YouTube, filmed in his flat, grainy video quality, poor sound. I think he is a great teacher, very ...

Re: Avalok's Journal
Really starting to get the knack of F and Bm chords now. Had one practice session a couple of weeks back where I realised how I needed to twist my arm inward toward my waist to apply enough pressure on the bar. Still need to perfect it, and work on changes to/from the chord, but it is coming on much ...

Re: Avalok's Journal
Been getting lost in the guitar these past few weeks. It's feeling less and less like training and I'm surprised how quickly I can pick songs up vs. just a few months ago. Still struggling to get F chord right, my eblow can't move in enough to allow me to anchor the bar down, leading to an ...

[1] Do I have error handling in case I screw up and type a string instead of a number? No, fuck you. This ain't no corporate software. Besides, I didn't put in a "quit" option, so causing that ValueError is more often than not how I end the loop.
So adjusted am I to enterprise software that I ...

Re: Avalok's Journal
So, new job role has come off. Now the fun starts. Had a call with the new IT lead today; we are clearly on the same page regarding the leverage points for improving our work and the value we provide as a team. Having listened to his vision, I'm hopeful the sort of changes I want to make will be met ...

Interesting to hear what projects you have planned for the year, particularly no. 3. It'll be interesting to hear your thoughts as you build this higher system up.
Spiral Dynamics has been on my to-read list for some time; that you found it so profound makes me wonder if it should be higher up...

Re: GTD Getting Things Done for ERE People
when I finally get around to reviewing it I'll find myself puzzling about what I might have meant by this or that Next Action, or realise that projects have been completed or become unnecessary in the meantime
I quite often find a few things in the weekly review that are now irrelevant/redundant ...

I would also add the regular recommendation.
The Fifth Discipline has a very good motivation for this way of thinking, as well as good examples of some systems-models.

Re: Avalok's Journal
Thanks, and yes, I am planning to make use of it to develop such skills, as well as continuing my technical development. I instigated a casual catch-up amongst the team back in the autumn after a couple of colleagues independently complained that it can feel like we're working in silos, despite ...

Thank you both. I am trying to keep my expectations down for the next year, with the job and hopefully mortgage paid off, but it is exciting, I cannot deny.

Yeah, this is a really, really great end of year post. I think that if you're wanting to remove procrastination because you've found things you want to spend time on, yet want to be doing even more of them, you're in a great place. All the best for 2024!

Re: Ecology- MMG
We are on the Cornwall-Devon border currently and the theme is similar here, much milder than the year before. There's also been a lot of precipitation (which is saying something, as where we are is a temperate rainforest). The rivers are running much higher and faster than I recall a year ago. The ...
