Re: ffj's Early Retirement (round 2)
@bottlerocks Thanks for the kind words. Praise the gods I finally stopped itching a couple days ago. Itching that is the most intense I have ever felt; it puts poison ivy to shame. And thank goodness I never had respiratory issues. That shit scares the fuck out of me. The hives went away completely ...

Here you go: https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52659183192_3a2c953bc4_c.jpg She's really dirty but works just fine. I can change the angle and I can slowly advance into the wheels with the screw advancement. I made a blade holder for the planer and jointer knives which rest on the horizontal piece...

@rigger Yeah, you apply your internal value system when making these appeals. But so do others if they actually have any and the rest are there to prey upon your morals which they perceive as a weakness to exploit. When you offer to fall upon your sword they are happy to oblige you. I've been a foll...

Re: Resources and recommend watching
Ha! I spent several days in a retirement community directly adjacent to the Villages this past year. A buddy of mine bought an investment and vacation house in a 55 and older gated community, with a home owners association and monthly fee. It's an hour to Orlando. Oh my god I was ready to put a bull...

Owner of several CRV's over the years.
The starter is a pain in the ass to access. I had to YouTube the procedure to one mechanic because he was genuinely stumped on how to get to it to change it out.
The rebar idea is great.

Re: How to cut slot in board with hand tools?
Are you cutting those slots at an angle? As in the instructable? That's going to be a challenge if so. Just for contrast, you could also make a push plane out of a chisel with a block of wood. Even put a fence guide on it to maintain parallel. Turn the chisel upside down and mount it to the wood at ...

No worries, thankfully nobody is angry. :D You make good points. And with the "blog" already written I would think the majority of the workload is already complete. But it's not my decision, I just think it's a worthy idea. @rigger "My own solution would be more like create an environ...

I like Veritas, or a multitude of Japanese makers I can't afford. I assume you are of the feminine persuasion which puts you at a disadvantage as far as sizing handles and the like. I thought Veritas had small handles to be honest. You may just have to make custom handles for all of your tools, whic...

@jacob I think you are selling the poors a bit short but yes there are challenges. One of Ramseys strong selling points is that he very strong on personal responsibility which resonates with the very people that are characterized as not having agency. Not everyone, but enough. But he is also a showm...

@jacob I just read your old blog post and I don't see why the blog contributions couldn't become a primer, if edited well, to your ERE book. It's logical, consistent, and actionable, which is what financially illiterate people need. It is so much more conversational than the green book and the point...

I'll have to check it out. Never heard of it before and it makes me wonder what I was doing in 1985 to miss it?

Re: ffj's Early Retirement (round 2)
I am pretty much back to normal health-wise. I have an appointment with an allergist in the near future to help me figure out exactly what I reacted to which will be a relief once that is determined. In the mean-time I am monitoring my vitals, watching what I consume, and exercising more. I've also ...

Re: Would 20M Radically Increase Your Happiness?
Monetarily? No. I'm already financially rich. But, it would be a very interesting challenge to remain anonymous and do good in the world. Sounds like a movie, doesn't it? But the instant you are found out to be a multi-millionaire the game would be over, and the amount of problems you would inherit ...

@reep Do you guys not have an electric joiner? If they are going to let you use the electric planer then they should let you use that too. There is a reason people don't hand-plane to dimension anymore, it's just work. Years ago people didn't have a choice but they do now, and almost nobody will do ...

@7 "*Which is why I am lately kind of in the mode of thinking that the audience of the "relatively poor" is where ERE ought to head next rather than trying to convince more of the affluent to give up their nice things/social status for free time, etc. What would it take to make your d...

@ertyu Me too ;) @Henry That fucking plate. Karma's a bitch. :D @7 My call for help is when I fell down like a sack of potatoes and my wife heard me fall. Apparently I make a distinctive sound when my legs collapse beneath me and I lose consciousness. It freaked her out but she drove me to the hospi...

@guitar Did you slap the logs? Growers swear that you have to slap your grow blocks with Shiitake, and I've always done it just because why not? The water immersion I believe should occur after the first flush to start the second. But all of this info is from growing on 5lb sawdust blocks. I've neve...

As a former firefighter and EMT I have delivered many people to the ER at a hospital, and yet have never been on the opposite end. Until last Sunday. I awoke in the early morning to a severe rash across my stomach, and being that it was 3 in the morning and still very tired I chalked it up to possib...

Re: the animal's journal
@Gilberto It's aesthetics and feel and patina of the wood. Sort of like a classic rifle with metal and wood versus excessive plastic of new guns. The Japanese make beautiful chisels that are usually pre-honed to a beautiful edge with classic wooden handles. Compare that to a chisel from Home Depot t...
