Re: Dead White Man's Clothes: The Environmental Disaster Fuelled by Used Clothes

I'm fairly confident about ours but we always come near the top of the table in the UK (Oxfordshire). However I'm less confident about the value of recycling plastic. Given that we already burn things for energy and are struggling to eliminate plastic I think we might as well incinerate the stuff fo...

Re: Volksmarching as an example of emergent movement design

Biggest yet is ~43 miles in a day with my brother and my SiL several months back. The goal was 100,000 steps on her pedometer, which our various devices estimated at an average of 43 miles. Trying to talk my wife into working up to a 50 mile day with me, but she isn't enthused . My son was mos...

Re: Will Gas Stations Exist In 15 Years?

An article I read recently made the claim that maintenance costs aren't much, if at all, lower for electric cars because the brakes need to be (expensively) serviced since regenerative braking is used so often. That doesn't make sense at all, if you are using more regenerative braking then you are ...

Re: Is 4% dead?

I'm not sure it's as easy as snapping their fingers. After all if they could have done that then they almost certainly would have already. When you are looking at professional services the number of opportunities shrinks with every step up the ladder. Maybe it's different for people that run their o...

Re: Any math teachers here?

@WFJ The stabbings are very unlikely to be an issue for teachers personally. There has been a lot of media attention about knife crime in London recently and whilst it is a serious problem it predominantly effects only certain communities in certain areas. It's also in decline. The government were ...

Re: Any math teachers here?

I know some UK math teachers for the under-12 set of children. They moved to Canada - twice the pay, half the living cost, and a twentieth the stabbings (location dependent on this one of course). Plenty of gun crime rather than stabbings though, fifth worst in the OECD. In fact the medium teacher ...

Re: Any math teachers here?

Particularly in the UK there is lots of noise about teachers in general being overworked, I am not sure to what extent I would want to believe it. https://www.theguardian.com/education/2019/sep/18/25-of-teachers-in-england-work-more-than-60-hours-a-week-study There were a few teachers at my kids sc...

@WFJ I've seen that with my own consulting clients. The more I charged them the nicer they were to me.

Some of my ageing relatives do these sort of brain training exercises (although not mathematical proofs). I think the evidence for them providing any benefit is weak to nonexistent.

Re: Dead White Man's Clothes: The Environmental Disaster Fuelled by Used Clothes

Everything gets worn to threads, my image be dammed. This is the key point. I don't feel guilty buying my clothes new because I know they won't leave the house until they are completely used up. @Ego's suggestions are thought provoking but you are venturing into cleaning up other people's waste whi...

Re: COVID model - Bio stats observations and questions

Some things take time to play out. They do but in most biological processes you usually see a few unlucky individuals that develop disease early just as you might come across an individual who ERE's early after a windfall. The chances that we have stored up a problem that is going to unfold in ten ...

We don't know what the long term side effects are with any of them, because they haven't existed long enough.
After 4.5 billion doses I suspect we would have a good idea by now.

@ZAF There is probably plenty of cobalt available if we want to avoid DRC.

Also my understanding is that VW and Tesla are both close to eliminating cobalt in their batteries.

Re: Will Gas Stations Exist In 15 Years?

I find it funny on a forum full of luddites and low-tech aficionados (some of whom still eschew cell phones) that so many posts argue that the conversion to EVs will happen quickly. Exponential growth. The only thing holding them back right now is constrained battery supplies. Of course there will ...

Re: Will Gas Stations Exist In 15 Years?

The economics of that process could change, but I don't see how you get to a point where vehicles aren't recharging and humans aren't getting drinks and snacks at something resembling the current gas station in the next 15 years, or realistically much much longer. If we had an EV then I'm pretty su...

Re: Will Gas Stations Exist In 15 Years?

I think leased batteries would have to catch on more. I understand that one company is expanding outside of China to Europe now. The idea of stopping for 20-30 minutes at a gas station doesn't seem as good as swapping out a battery at a station and continuing on your way. NIO is the company that I ...

Re: Will Gas Stations Exist In 15 Years?

Is it even possible for the USA to scale up its power grid in time to support such ambitious electric vehicle adoption predictions? I don't know about the US but in the UK the National Grid has said it only needs to go back to 2002 levels of production to cope with the whole fleet moving to electric.
