Re: Headphone recommendations
I'm planning on buying Sony XM3. They're cheaper than XM4 since now they're "old", but they still cost an insane 1200 PLN ($320) here in Poland... That's a lot of money for a not-that-repairable gadget. I suspect they might be my largest expense through the whole 2021. They're a necessity ...

Re: Software development for UK/EU nationals
I've read an account of a 22 year old who is already contracting at 800 EUR per day in Europe... So, if you can learn quickly, you can get to the nice-paying contracts in a couple of years. Most people don't accomplish that though, probably because they either can't be bothered to work harder than m...

Re: Software development for UK/EU nationals
I'm from Poland, but have contracted in UK in the past (lived in London for a while). My understanding of the market is that contracting is for people who are especially in demand (the positions can't be filled with regular employees, whom the companies almost always prefer), i.e. either for people ...

Re: Is humanity worth saving?
Do you have a source for this number? It sounds strange given that forests alone cover 30% of Earth's land, and forests are used mostly for fuel and construction materials, not food.

Re: Jordan Peterson
Fair enough. I usually mostly check out when JP goes deep into his mythological analyses... They're fairly handwave'y and, to me, you need to make much stronger arguments than he does to support the claims that those myths carry real hard truths in them. I don't think most people are interested that...

(...) and while their lives may often be far from perfect the little lobsters have the right to criticize their world and whatever predatory practices the world allows, rather than naturalize them with lobster comparisons. I think we're in agreement then. I think Peterson is defending hierarchies l...

Re: Jordan Peterson
Peterson himself said many times that the big drawback of meritocratic society is that those without the comercially-recognized merits may end up destitute. He also said that it's society's duty to take care of them. As for toilet cleaners, even they can improve themselves in many ways, incl. improv...

Re: Jordan Peterson
sure, fix your posture and climb on the hierarchy, but then what? in such ponzi schemes, the ones at the bottom of the pyramid end up dead. individual climbing is not a cure for this. and hierarchies don’t always work out favorably for the group, so *we replace them*. You seem to assume that the on...

Re: Zankas poker-journal
Poker really exposes any hubris you might have - i.e. if you think you're better than you really are and start playing difficult spots or challenging difficult opponents, your inadequacy will be quickly exposes in your win (or, rather, loss) rate. Psychologically, poker at most levels of play is mos...

Re: Zankas poker-journal
In my friend's case, his life is full of other interests (largely philosophy and mysticism) and people he spends time with, so yeah, he's not exactly super focused on his poker career. Also, he has two major personality traits, which are terrible if you want to make it in poker, namely lack of disci...

Re: Zankas poker-journal
Your poker numbers, both in terms of volume and winnings, look great for someone who has a family and fulltime(ish?) job. I have a friend who's been an online pro (meaning, he exclusively lives off his poker winnings, not that he's some kind of big shot :) for the past 12+ years and his numbers are ...

Re: Help me think about the next step in my life
@ Lemur Yep, that's my experience too. At a senior developer level, you're essentially a bureaucrat who codes and the coding is incidental at times (I have days or even weeks when I fight the bureaucracy to get access to some system or data and write zero code during that time). As in any large orga...

Re: Help me think about the next step in my life
(Hi! I'm new to the forum BTW). Warning: a MAJOR rant coming ahead. Bear in mind that this is my subjective take on the industry, but I suspect it's shared by many (esp. seeing how much burnout is being there in tech or at least how much people discuss it). ----------------------- I've been working ...
