Re: Western Red Cedar's Journal

Thanks for your journal update! After some searching I found ebook versions of Loney Planet and Rough Guide books. That should solve the weight problem! Thank you. My digital library (libby app) actually has the lonely planet guides on hand as well. I checked one out before I left, but forgot about...

It sounds like you have a lot of cool projects going on. That's great! But! I'm set up to meet my Grocery Store budget ($300/mo) for the first time since setting that goal over a year ago. The first 4 months of the year I'm averaging $426.45 each month on groceries, and $339.65 on restaurants (food ...

I"m just catching up on your journal and return to work. That must feel great to have some more context for the professional struggles. Wishing you the best as you navigate that world again and I encourage you to keep writing about it. I may return at some point as well so I appreciate hearing ...

Re: Western Red Cedar's Journal

My Indonesian visa is coming to an end, and I'll probably do a writeup on Bali later. I had a few random thoughts on travel and the nomadic lifestyle that I've been pondering: 1. I've loosely followed a digital nomad trail for inspiration on locations and travel strategy. Part of this is because the...

Kudos on the grant. That is exciting. It is kind of amazing to see what opportunities unfold for those with initiative, who can write well, and also read the fine print in a contract/grant/tax code, etc... I'm guessing that the experience of being a "developer" or "small business owne...

@wrc - how did you geek out on diet and exercise? I feel I need to geek out on those for a while - to be less fat. Currently focused on my food expenses because they are too damn high. Feeling ready to optimize for health as well as budget. I think I need a system or some metric/habits to track for...

@IDave - thanks for stopping by. I'm glad you are enjoying the photos and vicarious travels. Keep in mind that Canada isn't much of a drive for you, and it often has a strong international flair in certain cities and regions. As DW and I were preparing for this trip years ago, we put international t...

Re: Social capital

I think taking money = financial capital as the baseline capital which all other capitals are compared to is a mistake. Yes, but even in our choice of the term "capital" we are already there. It is probably worth thinking about the motivation and purpose in using some of that terminology....

Again, my main reason for having written this out is I'm on the lookout for decent quality reading materials. Hints appreciated! You can start here. I think the original post in that thread links back to an additional discussion on social capital in a WL6---WL7 thread: https://forum.earlyretirement...

Re: Western Red Cedar's Journal

Funnily enough, this effect is almost invisible to people who are still in the accumulation phase. You can also see it in people's NW graphs. Bull market aside, if it's an almost straight line up, they're still saving far more than their capital income and capital gains add (or subtract). The marke...

However, I told the fact-checker that the whole "father"-reference thing is pretty rare and that it kinda diminishes the generations that came before. They ignored it and wrote it in anyway. I get the impression you don't follow much financial content from "FInfluencers" - https...

Re: Western Red Cedar's Journal

@2B1S Fortunately I'm not stressing market activity at all. I realized about halfway through the FI journey that I got pretty excited about the gains, but didn't really stress the drops. This is pretty fortunate, and I think it is likely a result of preparing myself early psychologically for a lot o...

Re: Damn it Feels Good to be a Gangsta

You are certainly not alone. I think hyper-focusing on COL and money is a significant hurdle for many here, myself included. The irony for me is that the more money I accumulated, the more I realized it doesn't really matter that much in terms of securing my freedom. I also think it is easy to overc...

Re: Damn it Feels Good to be a Gangsta

how do we balance these trade-offs? Selfishly, I'm trying to think across systems in my life to create a more coherent, homeotelic web of actions, motivated by my values, that enables me to pursue my web of goals. I see the benefit of a dishwasher as directly increasing my time for creativity. I se...

Our visa expired and our time in Vietnam has come to an end. I'm glad we were able to spend a full twelve weeks there. It was DW's first time and my first return in roughly fifteen years. We would both gladly go back. A few photos from the trip: Street Life in Dalat: https://i.imgur.com/qZM0do4.jpeg...

If you google the title of the article you should be able to get beyond the paywall. Classic NYT trick.

I enjoyed the article, and thought it presented a fairly balanced view on FIRE. The photo of Wong in the Ironman suit is a beautiful manifestation of the ridiculous nature of Fatfire.
