Re: USA ERE Locations

The other variable not mentioned above regarding fires in the western US is that the US Forest Service had a policy for 80+ years to eliminate all fires as quickly as possibly. Smokey the bear has become a controversial figure out here :? Fire has been a natural part of the landscape for thousands o...

Re: Treasuries in lieu of cash for emergency fund?

I've been considering something similar recently - a balance of i bonds, cd ladder, and cash. To Jacob's point above, I think the key question is how much you actually need in your emergency fund? If you have the ability access credit or other funds without selling stocks in a bear market, you proba...

Re: Housing Affordability Index

I have no idea why with the increasing frequency of wildfires and drought conditions so many people seem to be flocking out west. It’s honestly baffling to me. It is a little baffling to me as well. Many people I talk to seem relatively unconcerned about wildfires and wildfire smoke. They'll sit ou...

Re: USA ERE Locations

I think the housing affordability index shows why the PNW may no longer be the best ERE location. You can certainly find inexpensive options with some creative, ERE solutions; but the increase in housing prices over the last few years has been insane. Costs have balooned in large metros, small towns...

Re: Vagabonding, ERE Style.

Welcome to the forum Vagabond! I'm eager to hear more about your travel plans and itinerary after you transition away from the salaryman lifestyle. How are you projecting costs for future travels? If you are basing your SWR on expenses in a HCOL city, it seems like you might have some wiggle room th...

Given our net worth and income, its more valuable to simplify our lives, derisk, and open up some option value on our jobs sooner.
This is an important insight. Sometimes it is necessary to put the math aside and take the path that leads to a richer life.

i've gone back and forth on fish oil supplements over the last year. It seems like they don't necessarily source the best quality oils for many supplements. I plan on finishing the current bottle I have and increasing my intake of chia seeds (great in a protein shake if that is part of your routine)...

Re: Packing cubes vs plastic bags or tote bags

@Jean - the major issue I observed was traveling with a 40-50L backpack. Sometimes I'd only be staying somewhere for a night or two and didn't want to completely unpack and repack my bag. However, I might need one particular item like a pair of swimming trunks or hiking socks. I would often end up d...

Re: Packing cubes vs plastic bags or tote bags

I think it is primarily about organization. It is possible they are more efficient with space, though I can't say I've tried to use tote bags as a like-for-like replacement. DW has used them for a couple years, and I finally picked two up after traveling with her. I travel with backpacks, which mean...

Re: Western Red Cedar's Journal

I had an opportunity to catch up with an old friend from graduate school recently. He had transitioned from the public sector to a consulting firm, so it offered a good opportunity to pick his brain about the pros and cons of consulting work in my field. I've known this guy for more than twenty year...

Oooh - I love De-loused in the Comatorium. I enjoy it during workouts or on long car drives. I still vividly remember the first time I heard it. My brother and I were visiting family in England and my uncle wanted to show us his new car stereo. I remember the transition between the first short track...

I'm not sure when I started to give up though - perhaps subtle influences by concerned parents/teachers but I eventually concluded that what I was doing was essentially a waste of time and I needed to focus on school grades instead when I entered high school. Which I did - I ended up making good gr...

I'll be interested to hear your thoughts on Sapolsky. I listened to the audiobook earlier this year but had to return it to the library before I was finished. I felt like I got what I wanted out of it though. I paired it with a book by one of Sapolsky's colleagues at Stanford called The Upside of St...

An interesting way to cook rice, the Japanese way. This is the method we've used to cook rice for the last year or so after our trusty rice cooker finally wore out. It lasted 15-20 years. DW is really particular about her rice and doesn't like it from an instant pot. ------ A really simple recipe f...
