Re: Rossox Journal (From France)

Hi Rossox, how have you been since 2018?
Are you still in Annecy? It's a wonderful place! I like Savoie a lot too, even if I don't live there.
Hope you're fine and that your ERE journey is going well.

I currently use a mid 2012 Macbook pro. It is the last macbook pro you can upgrade and fix yourself.
I wanted to say exactly this. 2012 15" non retina macbook pro. Excellent choice.

It would be epic! Definitely an ERE-minded project.
Don't forget to relate it here if you do it =D

Re: Stonage journal

Some examples here (english), or here and here (french).

I don't own one myself (very small bathroom in an apartment), I'm just aware of the concept.

Re: Stonage journal

This is nice! Camping into the wild is difficult indeed, especially with wolfs around ;) By heat exchanger, I meant a (pretty simple) device whose function is to take your shower sewage heat, to input it into your incoming cold water. This way your cold water is 20°c instead of 5 (for example) and y...

Re: Stonage journal

Good saving ratio considering that you have kids!
Holidays have a decent budget too, so you're not restraining too much :)

Electricity is a bit high though! Did you considered using a heat exchanger for your shower?
And a wood burner for heating?

Re: Stonage journal

By the way Stoneage, I see that your last budget post is 5 years old!
Have you improved some things since? And how's your business?
Do you still use electricity for heating?

So many questions =D

Re: Stonage journal

Courage Stoneage! Bad luck indeed but you're managing it right. On real estate, I mostly agree with you. Nevertheless, prices have increased differently through territory. There is still areas where prices are reasonable compared to rents. You're right about demography; but if the deal is good enoug...

Re: Stonage journal

The nature you live in seems a bit harsh sometimes! Your vegetation losses are significant. How do you feel about it overall? Did you consider investing in real estate? You can do self-sustaining operations if you manage it well (with a 20 year mortgage). You could then sell when you need funds (chi...

Re: Stonage journal

Haha, your first point killed me! A great one isn't it ;)

Do you have a water collector to adress the drought problem? (Filled by your gutters). If it's a bit high from the ground you don't even need a pump to use it.

As for your dream, I share it.

Where do you invest your funds?

Re: Anyone in Paris?

We mitigate the annoyance of living in a big town by living near our workplaces, so we do everything by foot, which negates a lot of the trouble.
But yeah, the good life is not in a city in my opinion :)

Re: Stonage journal

Good estate increase! Your land size is impressive. Does it contribute to your ERE quest (cultivate vegetables, fruit trees, chickens, firewood)? Children are expensive for sure, they're a "friction" (using Jacob's terminology) with the ERE goal, that said they don't make anything impossib...

Re: ERE as Chess Discussion

Chess is such a wonderful game! Its deepness extends its lessons far beyond the board, allowing meaningful comparisons with life itself. May I be allowed to expose some of those which relates to ERE philosophy. Genius appears foolish to the profane eyes The state of the world is not the same for som...

Re: A french newcomer into the rabbit hole

@Stoneage: haha, I didn't know the SHTF expression, even though I like the prepping movement (without being in myself). Northern Italy is an idea to be considered indeed! I love the mountains very much by the way. I also think about eastern EU countries since several days! A friend of mine visited s...

Re: Anyone in Paris?

Haha, not an ERE friendly place indeed!
Fortunately I and DW don't live the typical and expensive parisian life (introverts here), so we mitigate the high cost of living.

Burgundy is a very nice area, I would love to go to countryside too, we will do it when we will be closer to FI! :)

Hey Stoneage,

How's your ERE journey since 2015? What have you improved some things?

As you're in countryside, do you have a gardener? :)

Re: Anyone in Paris?

Thanks for the references Jean, they seem very interesting, especially the book. You're right about the ERE proximity of "Simplicité volontaire" and "Décroissance" movements, though they may lack the investment part. I'm a bit more reserved about the "punks à chiens", w...

Re: Anyone in Paris?

Haha, well, I'm currently searching. The difficult part is that, as Jacob pointed out somewhere, there's a lot of people aiming to be financially independent; and also a lot of people aiming to turn their back to the consumerism ideology. But rare are those who want both! French people don't like to...

Anyone in Paris?

Hello dear folks,

Is anyone near Paris?
I live here so if anyone is interested in a meetup, I would be glad to participate.

Considering the quasi-absence of ERE in France, this is like a message in a bottle but even if you're french don't hesitate to say hello :)
