Re: Renewed motivation to push for financial independence

Ack. I took a sick day today to try to kick a cold that I’ve been fighting for several days, and finished the ebook I bought yesterday :/ I am tempted to buy another, but am instituting a one book per month policy. Books are an area in which I can very easily overspend. Back to obsessively watching ...

Re: Renewed motivation to push for financial independence

The book is actually on a topic I’d rather keep private.

Also made a related purchase today for $101.15.

No money spent in September!

No-spend September was a success!

Spending since I’ve started tracking it:

July: $322.32+ (I started tracking mid-month, so only have a partial accounting; this was the month of the big meet the parents wedding road trip, very spendy)
August: $9
September $0

Re: Renewed motivation to push for financial independence

I just got accepted to a 10-day Vipassana meditation course in November. It will be my second such course. The courses (including food and accommodation) are free, and donations are accepted only from students who have completed a course and benefited from the practice. I found my first course so va...

Re: Renewed motivation to push for financial independence

I taught myself to use a sewing machine yesterday, and today knocked out half of my mending, which has been accumulating for over a year. Exciting! I do not find it as pleasant as hand sewing, and don’t have good control over it yet, but it’s so FAST.

No-spend September still on track.

Re: Renewed motivation to push for financial independence

I want to buy an ebook so badly. Halfway through no-spend September and holding out so far, but I keep torturing myself with Kindle samples.

Re: Renewed motivation to push for financial independence

No-spend September is a go so far.

Canned fifty quarts of jam today, tired. Need to plant saffron this weekend and put our house back together now that the earthen floors are sealed and dry.

Re: Renewed motivation to push for financial independence

I know, so silly!

I am thinking about trying again in September. We might have to put gas in the truck this month, though. Plus I am dying for an ebook. But I hate to reward myself for not following through (well, except with ice cream)—no-spend September it is! I will figure out the truck issue.

Spending log

$9 ice cream Dang it! I didn’t even think about no-spend August until I was signing the receipt. Yesterday I bought ice cream for my partner and me during our walk along the river on our twice-a-month trip into town to shop for the community. Whoops! I am somewhat comforted by the fact that my last ...

Re: Hristo's FI Journal

@Hristo I only enjoy building stuff when it's natural materials. If it's all drywall and foam insulation and PVC I am just demoralized, but building a house or furniture out of trees I felled myself is great! There is a YouTube blogger in China (pretty much the only YouTube I watch) who bodges a lot...

Re: Renewed motivation to push for financial independence

Got the Bodie book, but haven't had time to dig in yet.

Still on track for no-spend August.

Took a trip to Glacier NP with friends this last weekend--luckily her park pass covered the whole vehicle and everyone in it. Beautiful park, enjoyed hiking, wish I made more time to hike and swim more often.

Re: Hristo's FI Journal

Depends on your rainfall and catchment area (usually roof), but often totally possible. In addition to a Berkey, I also have a Lifestraw and a Sawyer mini that I use for backpacking, which are cheap and portable, last a very long time, and allow you to drink from natural sources without getting sick...

Re: Hristo's FI Journal

Hristo, I haven't read your entire journal, but have you ever considered homeschooling your children? In my view, there is very little advantage to most primary and secondary schooling in intellectual terms (an intelligent parent can relatively easily master what parts of the curriculum they've forg...
