GameStop just doubled to USD 90+. This phenomenon has a lot more longevity than I thought.

Interesting developments, congrats on landing the new job!
Keep us posted on how you go with your homesteading efforts, in particular growing mushrooms is something I’ve thought about for a while now.

Great job on keeping the Groceries at such a low level. It is quite ridiculous how expensive groceries are in Australia. DW and I spend multiples of that, but it’s also a conscious choice for us. I am always amazed at US levels of grocery spending.

Dave Portnoy's little speech embedded in this article will one day be in wikipedia as an example of Irrational Exuberance/Stock Market Euphoria. And he probably believes what he's saying!Mister Imperceptible wrote: ↑Wed Jan 27, 2021 8:22 pmhttps://www.zerohedge.com/markets/sec-j ... volatility

Re: bostonimproper's journal
Typically women are recommended to try for at least a year before addressing potential fertility issues— and I don’t think IVF would be the first thing I’d turn to. We’re only at around 5 months. Also, with everything going on (basically not going outside ever, low grade stressors everywhere), my c...

On pregnancy: I personally find the lack of control hard to deal with. Have you considered IVF and the like ? It might give you a sense of at least moving in the right direction and may take some stress out of the equation.

Re: Investments Trade Log
My thinking is that even if we have inflation, by owning stocks (i.e. parts of companies), you still own something concrete, so the dollar value will reflect inflation. This may seem logical (it was to me) but has it been the case in the past? Ben Graham, the grandfather of investment gurus has don...

Makes sense.
Agreed with home office not being a lot of fun. I’ve had a similar experience, doesn’t help with motivation for work!
Good luck with reducing your hours, keep us updated how you go.

Hi Flurry,
Interesting to see someone from a high-tax country take up ERE. How does the social security/pension system factor into your calculations, if at all? I can imagine the high taxation rate and Social Security payments would be quite a drag on your timeline.

Re: 3 yrs to FI: ertyu's journal
Make sure you don’t set yourself up for a life of misery. Looking after increasingly frail and grumpy parents when not having the best relationship to start can be a recipe for disaster. Just because you and your family regard you as the default caring option doesn’t mean it’s a done deal. Make it a...

Re: So where is the much-touted inflation?
Not sure about points 1-3. Why should it be any different this time than the other times? If you truly believe in the big inflation scenario then hard assets should serve you well, gold, possibly real estate? Maybe also have a look at the Permanent Portfolio. It may be a better option if you don’t ...

Re: So where is the much-touted inflation?
I'll revive this thread since I think we've got some big changes ahead when it comes to inflation. inflation has been stagnant in 'the West' for a while now, in particular since the GFC. Money is cheap and cheaper than it has been in a long, long while. My understanding is that there seems to be a c...

Haha, thank you for reading and for your insightful and challenging observations. What I haven't shared is that I have quite strong family connections to the island, going back through my parents. I have visited on holiday and for work over the years and have a strong affection for the place. (DW h...

Re: Energy usage log
Great thread. Our (couple of 2) unit in Australia is around 80m2 with ducted gas heating and terrible insulation (windows, walls and floors have basically no insulation, only the ceiling has some cellulose incorporated). Water is also heated using gas. We use electricity for the stove, oven, compute...

Interesting read Rob! Great to hear you're making progress on the decluttering front. Regarding relocating to the Isle of Man - I personally wouldn't let tax benefits for my children determine where I set up camp for the rest of my life. While it's noble that you'd want to minimize their tax burden ...

Re: 3 yrs to FI: ertyu's journal
A few thoughts on the relationship with your parents. It sounds like you are a bit like cat and dog, where there is little mutual understanding of each other. A way of describing it is with the analogy of love languages in a relationship. Some people show their love in a relationship by saying "...

Agree on labouring jobs not always being politics-free. My brother has had some good experiences with labour-hire agencies though, that may be a good place to start with a reasonably low barrier to entry.

Re: 3 yrs to FI: ertyu's journal
Yesterday, I received the news that I would have been fired in this year's performance cull anyway. I received communication from my former employer that they are not interested in further employment relations with me and they invite me to resign if I don't want to show up as "fired" on v...
