Re: Maths modules to choose from - advice appreciated

Thanks for commenting @WFJ. Looking at the 'graphs...' course recently, I wonder if the fact that it is three different themes (graphs, networks, design) would play out - would it be just a hodgepodge of ideas or is there a good structure to it. What do you think? [ETA] regarding data analyst, surel...

Re: The most radical thing you could do today

Well, the notion of risk has probably been around for quite a bit longer than since 1992 (actuarial profession?), but I think the crux of what he is saying is that there is no vision for a better state of affairs. Like in life, prepare for the worst and hope for the best; he seems to be saying there...

Re: The most radical thing you could do today

Makes me think about why writers used to publish under pen names, and if it was truly incognito publishing or people in 'the right circles' knew anyway. Somewhere on the forum I might have read a though experiment, something along the lines 'what would you choose: saving the world but nobody would e...

The most radical thing you could do today

The title is provocative as is Adam Curtis here when he says (in the context of how individualism has been harnessed by the capitalist system manufacturing off the shelf acts of expressing individualism) The most radical thing you could do today is to do something extraordinary and not tell anyone y...

Re: Maths modules to choose from - advice appreciated

I can see how formal logic can be fundamentally useful (in everything cognitive actually). Anyway, that crossroad is gone for me now. I am reading about deterministic and stochastic dynamics (as in, skimming through wiki). Looks like this might complement well 'applications of probability', 'applied...

Re: Maths modules to choose from - advice appreciated

Thanks for it @ducknald_don. I see a recurring word 'algorithm' in the description of MT365. I know you have been working in IT for a bulk of life, any particular connection between MT365 and IT (yes yes I know there is generally a fundamental connection between Maths and IT)?

Re: Balance

Sorry sometimes I have this tendency for idiosyncratic interpretation of words, so I basically thought of a candle burning out. Ironically, my Psych degree supervisor was researching burnout; however I stuck with him because he was the only one who would allow me to research whatever I wanted which ...

Re: Maths modules to choose from - advice appreciated

Thank you both, this already clarifies some things. @basuragomi, I appreciate the comment, that module was the most obscure of all for me. I looked at the detailed syllabus, it seems to link to the other part of my degree i.e. stats. @jacob, this was informative about complex analysis. I know that m...

Maths modules to choose from - advice appreciated

I am doing a BSc in Maths and Stats, now 2nd year of a 3-year course. In October 2022 I will have to choose one elective and I am starting to wrap my head around what to choose. Figured people here would be willing to give some advice. Maybe there are some particularly ERE-congruent choices. Some ac...

Lots of new green spaces, Casa del Campo is full of trees planted 10-20 years ago by the look of it. I said to DW it will be very nice looking in a couple of decades. Yup very fortunate to have the EU passport myself so moving there for us would not be an issue. Though in a year we'll both be able t...

Re: SD: Self-identity

This is cool @jacob, are you aware of any psychometric studies/tool on SD that try to quantify proportion of colours in various populations? Read the beginning of one of Wilber's books and they talk percentages which makes me think there is some sort of questionnaire (psychologists love questionnair...

Yeah sounds good! I did something along those lines for about 10 or 11 months though through circumstance rather than intentionally. I still remember it as one of the better times in my life.

Re: Balance

Thanks for the input, it was not intentional but dawned on me after the fact that the shorter the OP obviously the more free to interpretation. But maybe it's not a bad thing in this case since I am not looking for an answer to a particular question/problem but would rather invite to a conversation!...

Balance

I think most things can be enjoyable in life, intellectual work, physical work, repetitive work, house chores, raising children, being too cold/hot, as long as they are in balance. Ultimately the joy comes from the fact of living. What are your techniques for obtaining balance in life? Do you have a...

Just back from Madrid. A great city, very clean and pretty. We had solid 4 days of sun and blue sky, this does not happen in Scotland, ever. I met some of DW's family and generally had a good time. Visited museums and parks, got a good feel of the city. Would like to move to Spain for 2-3 years in t...

Re: How many of you are low energy?

This then is like a prisoner scribbling on the cell walls each day of their sentence so that they accumulate and the prisoner sees all the bulk? I did something like this for my dad so he can count until his retirement next year October. A simple excel page filled with cells in a shape of an inverte...
