Re: Make Stuff Log

I made a haybox today. I feel stupid for not making one when I was, I don't know, ten years old or something. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/52388e11e4b0468ec26e275c/8a694686-29de-4d83-9ba7-128f17a20653/PXL_20221005_192024409.jpg?format=500w https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/...

Re: Bike Lock?

Just wanted to clarify the rear triangle ulock thing in case it got missed. You don't have to pass the ulock through the frame to secure the frame: just pass it through the rear wheel rim inside the rear triangle. This secures both the rear wheel and the frame, and you can accomplish it with a small...

Re: Bike Lock?

Yeah don't bother with wire locks. RIP bike #1. Even small ulocks can be used to lock to the oddest of racks, if you get creative. Protip: sidle your bike up to a post. Thread the unlock through the rear tire rim, *in the middle of the rear triangle*, and then around the post. Rear wheel and frame a...

Re: The Education of Axel Heyst

To muse a bit further: my lifestyle in 2019 had the appearance/ aesthetics of a certain kind of frugality which I was attracted to. But I didn't then understand the mechanics of real frugality and voluntary simplicity, so I had no solid strategic function. Because of that, the very most frugal lifes...

Re: The Education of Axel Heyst

At least I feel it would be difficult for me to get up to your original expense level, it would probably take a few years to get there. Eh, it's not that hard. ;) Just tell your gf you'll support her financially even though you know she just got a 1985 vanagon that needs a new engine, pay for six m...

Re: The Education of Axel Heyst

Ten hours. My pace really dropped off for the last few miles as the pain in my feet spiked. And yeah I think you're right about the solar stuff. Also this community is remote enough that getting people to come all the way out and do good work is a real issue, for solar as well as just general handym...

September Renaissance Report Technical I'm designing and installing a photovoltaic system for the water well here, which has run on a gas generator for over twenty years. I'll do a separate post on that at some point. I'm also helping a neighbor retrofit his solar system, which has degraded to the p...

Awesome. Welcome to the forum. Please start a journal. :D Sounds like you're in a very interesting place in your life. I definitely recommend Jacob's book. From your intro you'll be nodding along to the front matter, but I suspect you'll get a lot out of the strategy assembly parts. (Having started ...

Slevin - really interesting stuff, thanks for posting it. For some reason the 'thinking about skill acquisition theory' portion of my brain has been full since I posted that episode... but I'll eventually loop back on the next pass of the #skillz conversation. I think I've been taking my current fra...

Re: RFS' Journal

I love these updates after a long silence and people have been off doing cool stuff. I used to think “the good life” was all about doing more, but I don't think that anymore. Life is better with less. The more I exclude the non-essential, the better I feel. And the more I actually achieve! What non-...

Super exciting!! I'm psyched to hear how the learning curve goes and how things shake out. It's good that you're getting set up now as the temps are dropping, rather than moving in in January.

Cold feet are terrible.

Re: The Education of Axel Heyst

The dating scene is indeed sparse, and local culture is mostly socal so not a huge amount of love for carless family-land-dwelling ERE dirtbags. Dating is a lower priority for me, as one of the takeaways coming out of my last relationship is that I'm now single by choice, as in single is my preferre...

My Life Now That I'm Back I'm on the family land, the land that is going to fall to me when my parents go. It's on the edge of the Mojave desert. It's 30 miles from town. There are less than a dozen neighbors, the nearest is a mile away. We're bordered by BLM, national forest, and designated wilder...

Re: The Education of Axel Heyst

On Saturday we had a neighborhood highway cleanup morning. It was good to meet old neighbors, some of whom I hadn't seen in 20 years, and also to meet new neighbors who'd taken over places I knew under the previous owners. I intend to develop a reputation as a generally available and capable neighbo...

Nice writeup! I'm going to be building a solar oven soon so this is great. I've used https://www.onedayglass.com/order-online/ for custom dimension dual-glazing units when I built my own windows. A 20"x20" sheet of pyroceram is 193$ (!!), same size sheet of standard tempered glass is $55, ...

@wrc - it became quickly apparent to me that there was zero percent chance of exDGF and I workawaying as a couple. She would have not enjoyed the kinds of setups I wanted to do, and the ones she wanted to do would have had no use for me. Before we broke up, we were going to try to do like a month se...

Question would be of the purpose for such travel. Picking up the above revived on the forum Bartle's taxonomy of players, one could take exploration as the purpose. Achievement as well. "I pedaled all the way to Tierra del Fuego, learned Spanish and how to fix a flat with a mixture of dried le...

Re: The Education of Axel Heyst

I'm back in the states now. I didn't say anything about it here because I was surprising a couple people, and they read my journal sometimes so I didn't want to spoil it. Here's the story: Over the past two months, I'd been feeling a greater sense of what I at first called homesickness. I was yearni...
