Re: AE's Journal Round 4

I don't keep stuff in general, and video game systems specifically, but I have kept my original NES and games from childhood. It's in a small box, and I have to lug it around everywhere when I move constantly, but I keep it nevertheless. I play it occasionally. I guess I'm stuck at a 90s level of te...

Re: AE's Journal Round 4

For example, older video games are less addictive than modern video games. Let's compare the original Mario game to Fortnite. In the original Mario, you simply beat the game and that was that. There was no social community around the game back when it first came out. And because Nintendo made money...

Re: AE's Journal Round 4

On Hobbies The problem with a lot of modern "hobbies," such as video games, Netflix, social media, what have you, is that they are essentially dissociative. That is, they are designed to alienate you from yourself by encouraging states where you are essentially stuck inside your own head ...

Seems like you are doing quite well and I will speak for the group by saying we're quite happy for you. Also, living in Colorado, one ERE/ecology thing I've been meaning to research is the groundwater situation in the state. They're currently pumping every non-renewable aquifer, as well as the Color...

Re: Hello / Hallo from Germany

Great link, thank you. I agree with your perspective. And early retirement with a chronic disease can mean no early retirement when you aren't guaranteed healthcare. It's also quite humbling to realize you could die at a relatively early age without modern medicine.

Hallo! Interested in your journal because I haven't found a lot of discussion about how chronic illness changes the calculus of early retirement. Alles Gute.

Since you eat oatmeal regularly, try two tbsp of ground flax seeds for omega 3 fats. Might help with mood. If you eat eggs, get the kind with omega 3.

Re: How much and which telecommunications technology to use? (Home internet, home phone, smartphone, etc)

I would do home internet alone if I really wanted to be tech lean. You can do whatever you need from there. One step more, adding the mini idiot box, so home internet + smartphone with wifi only, no cell plan. Might make things in public better assuming wifi is around.

Re: How much and which telecommunications technology to use? (Home internet, home phone, smartphone, etc)

@Loner I was grumpy and resistant for years. Watching people walk in public staring at those phones was just jarring. It turned my world upside down. And not that I go out to eat much, but when I did seeing people sitting around a meal table staring at their phones was just as bad. But the truth is ...

Re: How much and which telecommunications technology to use? (Home internet, home phone, smartphone, etc)

+1 to Alphaville @Loner I completely support and agree with your right to complain and resist, but at least we know that nothing will change anything. Barring a total breakdown of society, technology will progress. I don't really like it either, but "progress" marches on nevertheless. Late...

Re: How much and which telecommunications technology to use? (Home internet, home phone, smartphone, etc)

You are free to go against the grain, but you can't really complain when going against the grain causes you pain. The Technological Society will progess whether we like it or not. Read the book by Jacques Ellul if you want to know why that's true. Jacques Ellul is the guy Ted K. ripped off for his w...

Re: How much and which telecommunications technology to use? (Home internet, home phone, smartphone, etc)

@ AE You're right, really only makes sense with pay as you go. I use Ting. About $30 per month for my mixed use (low-moderate actual call minutes, moderate texts, low-moderate data). You can get it down to $11 if just line fee ($6) and up to 1,000 texts ($5). I recommend them because no issues and g...

Re: How much and which telecommunications technology to use? (Home internet, home phone, smartphone, etc)

Go without a phone and you will quickly realize how painful it can be. I had a regular mobile phone for years and when I switched to a smartphone I treated it like a regular phone. No social media, no apps really, just text messages and rare calls. I can download some stupid app if it's required or ...

Re: Headphone recommendations

@ThriftyRob I think headphones are ERE approved. The bang for the buck is outstanding, and you minimize space required for the activity and huge hassle when moving. If someone goes up into the thousands of dollars for headphones, that gets questionable, but a couple hundred for something that should...

Noise canceling Bose QC35 Regular Grado SR80e (US) Sony MDR-V6 (Thailand) Beyerdynamic DT 880 (Germany) I don't own noise canceling phones, but I own these three regular headphones, and linked to good, short reviews for each. I'm on a never ending search for great headphones. I prefer speakers, but ...

Re: AE's Journal Round 4

Douglas County, gotcha. Parker is sort of suburban utopia for those types. Ok, that area is kind of depressing. Now a better place, I'm not so sure, because I never could come up with a perfect area. Around Cheesman is nice with access to the park but that's mega bucks or renting an apartment. Maybe...

Too suburban? What neighborhood are you in? Don't answer if you are uncomfortable at all. I'm asking because I might have some specific recommendations to meet people. I'm telling you being near a decent sized park is a great way to meet people. Not so much people alone who are just relaxing, becaus...

Re: AE's Journal Round 4

Getting this job requires a tremendous amount of studying, and I've found it really hard to motivate myself to do it. It's weird because I used to love this stuff in college, but have absolutely no desire to crack open my textbooks now. I think I still want to at least try for the job because even ...
