Re: Fly baby, fly!

The naivete is definitely frustrating if you have a chronic condition. Maybe a more nihilistic/charitable way to look at it - our health is constantly degrading and nobody is "healthy" enough to stay there. Blood sugar is decreasing whenever we're not eating, sleep pressure constantly increases, mus...

Re: Stupid Paying-Down-The-Mortgage Question Asked 1mil x before

Investing in higher-return assets is superior to reducing low-cost debt, if the return exceeds the cost of debt. That's the most straightforward approach to take for this problem. Though I guess it isn't about the money in this case. Scenario A: keep paying down 14-year mortgage. Sell at end of 7 ye...

My take on the ERE Wheaton levels I've been thinking about the personal finance Wheaton levels. I was specifically intrigued by how many people interpreted the higher levels as necessarily requiring eco-hippy/permaculture/caveman communing-with-nature type lifestyles. I was trying to figure out if ...

Would you ever consider getting into ceramics as a floor covering instead of cob? Can still be produced with on-site materials, if you have the necessary mineral deposits at hand. I suppose the issue would be getting a strong enough support structure beneath it to prevent cracking, but for the longe...

I saw your post on the MMM forums, they didn't take too kindly to it. Hopefully you get a better reception here! $400/month to skip a 50-km drive would be worth it to me, moreso if it would allow for going car-free and also getting private space. You'd be recouping ~$140 in gas costs alone, and an h...

Pumpkin makes for great eating! I've met a disappointingly high number of people who think that pumpkin is purely for decoration and pie, when it's one of the best (and incredibly cheap) late summer vegetables. You can boil/roast it skin-on in big chunks (after washing the outside) then easily scrap...

Bubble Formula v4: Makes approximately 1 litre of bubble solution, about an hour of bubbling. Ingredients: 1000 g hot ~40C water - the hotter the better as it lowers surface tension. 50 g Dawn Ultra dish detergent - detergent base. Dawn seems to be the most effective brand tried so far. 3 g Guar gum...

An alternative to plastic welders is stitching it together. https://i.imgur.com/ygrefgb.jpg I drill/dremel a hole at the end of the crack to spread out mechanical stresses, then use a heated embroidery needle to make the holes. Fishing line lockstitch ties it together, though I added an additional t...

The International Math Olympiad is designed for high school students and has interesting problems to exercise your math skills or just think about. Or you could be like the North Koreans and cheat. Here's one of them: Six points are chosen on the sides of an equilateral triangle ABC: A1,A2 on BC, B...

I always interpreted "chop wood, carry water" more as a state of completely benefiting from one's labour. Every action taken has real benefit to yourself and no effort is required to undo the negative effects, if any, of your actions. Your environment has been intentionally designed/chosen to enable...

The benefit of loperamide is much more pronounced when you don't have ready access to a toilet and limited water supplies. I find in cases of gastrointestinal distress, attacks can continue way longer than necessary to get the offending material out, so loperamide might allow quicker recovery too. T...

I anticipate going from nearly naked to outdoors in 15 seconds. I think the most likely scenarios are flooding, CO leak, police action or a relative's medical emergency. This pack should be enough to sustain a 10-hour trail hike and overnight stay with relatives that can help or can be helped. It's ...

Re: How does your personal care regimen conform to or deviate from what is considered normal for your age and gender?

I haven't used shampoo or soap on my hair in something like 15 years. As far as I remember, it takes about 3 weeks after a shampoo to feel normal again. Oddly, people seem to regard this as being interesting or admirable rather than just being fast and free with a better result than shampoo. I guess...
