Re: Going back to work after you have retired? Any stories from those who have?
I’ve always been puzzled about the "I’ve gone back to work" posts in the FIRE sphere (referring to the two links above, not OP). They often sound confused (Jacob excluded). What did those people think they’d do once "retired"? Stay home and twiddle their thumbs for half a centur...

Going back to work after you have retired? Any stories from those who have?
So, since I retired in 2019, I got 2 different jobs. The latest job I got allowed me to save 96% of my income! But I quit after 2 months. I just found that I was unwilling to do the crazy things they asked, since I didn't need the money. I made enough in those two months to live for a couple years, ...

Re: Computer Science Degree or Self Learn?
I honestly think the best thing is the software craftsmanship approach with an apprenticeship. That can be hard to find but certainly exists in many areas. It skews towards those who are personally interested and motivated I would say. To find these opportunities, look for software craftsmanship me...

Re: Computer Science Degree or Self Learn?
I earned 400k as a software developer with an 8th grade education (failed 9th grade, dropped out to do homeschool, but literally just never did it). Got my GED at 30 because I wanted to. Never has it been an issue at all. No one cares. That being said I did take 1 college course, and I have that on ...

Re: Pay off cheap mortgage or keep it?
I paid for my house in cash and I am glad I did. I consider it a bad investment because I could have had the money invested elsewhere. But not paying any rent for the rest of my life is a great feeling! No stress. I love ittonyedgecombe wrote: ↑Sun Jul 12, 2020 2:08 pmThere is something deeply satisfying about paying off your mortgage.

Reflections on 1 year of Early Retirement Extreme
So... it's officially been a year for me since I found out about ERE. As noted in some of my other posts, because of health reasons, I did an immediate 180 degree turn and reduced my expenses dramatically from 5k+ a month to about 750/mo. I also was able to completely retire in December because of t...

Re: Pay off cheap mortgage or keep it?
If you were in the US, it would be a dangerous time to try to use a mortgage for leveraged real estate investments, with housing starting at very high valuations, the high impact of COVID-19 in our country, and reports of large numbers of mortgage owners and renters failing to make payments. In Fin...

Re: How to get an IT job?
Looks like you are in India so I can't comment much on the process there.
But I'd start on something like upwork.com, pick out small tasks once you feel confident in your ability with some technology (HTML/CSS is the easiest). Work for very cheap and just expand over time.

Re: Doing your laundry in a bucket?
The vast majority of people do not have a washer or dryer in the Philippines. My MIL would clean clothes by hand/bucket for a family of 11 ...daily. So point I'm making - insane in western society; common in other countries :) Yeah that's very true. I mean doing it for a family of 11 is an enormous...

Doing your laundry in a bucket?
So Jacob has that post about clotheslines and why they are valuable. I love Jacob but now I'm getting to the point I think he's not extreme enough  I wanted to see if anyone has taken to doing their laundry in a bucket. I started doing this about a month ago because the house I bought didn't ha...

Bingo! And that was a good outcome in that she actually paid you back. How is your relationship post-loan? It was like 20 years ago now and things were fine after, but I've also had other people I've loaned money and it was like pulling teeth. Now since then I've done contracts with people (for muc...

Re: What are other people's reactions to your living frugally?
But I strongly feel that lending larger sums of money to friends/family is a bad idea because of the stress it creates on the relationship. If I needed something; I would rather cut back, work more, and/or secure a loan through conventional means. Now, if I know that someone is truly struggling, I ...

Re: What are other people's reactions to your living frugally?
Another guess is while I was accumulating money I looked like a pauper from the outside. People may have been comforted by that till they learned I had a thousand times more wealth than them. Perhaps they feel duped. At the end of the day saying “I cannot afford that right now pal” is kind of a lie...

Re: Mini-retirements vs ERE?
Just my 2 cents on this but I think that most people, once they retire, will still do some money making endeavor. But when you are retired it's WAY less stressful. No or very little pressure to succeed. At least that's why I did it. I'm working on a number of things that may make money, I don't want...

@OP Food at $100 a month...very impressive. What do you do here? @Lemur, oh I definitely don't spend 100/mo on food, I was just giving a theoretical example on how you could live cheap enough to retire ultra quick. I could get by on 100 if I worked at a restaurant and got left overs tho. I generall...

Re: What are other people's reactions to your living frugally?
My mom periodically asks if we’re okay, if we need anything. She likes to control with money and enjoys awfulizing. Our contentment with having enough drives her crazy. It is quite amusing. My dad does this too, though not with ERE (he loves that I'm living frugally lol). Every time I suggest somet...
