Re: If the "right thing to do" is to not have kids, who do you think IS having kids?

It seems initial question assumes a correlation between having a high IQ people and deciding not to have kids to save the environment. I'm not so sure there is. For example, I have an IQ of 131, and most of my siblings are at least as intelligent as I am if not more so. And all of us intend to have ...

Re: Thought I'd ask some advice.

I have no friendship group and I've never had a girlfriend. I'm guessing you're naturally introverted, like me. If that's the case, friends/girlfriends won't just fall into your lap; it's going to take some work. If you really want to make friends, don't spend any free time at home. Go places - the...

Re: Architecture / Environmental Engineering

I want to apologize in advance for sounding like the prophet of doom. Does anyone have any insights into what working as an architect is like? No. Alas, neither do either of my friends who graduated with their bachelors in architecture. It appears to be a rather difficult field to break into. * Then...

Re: Mens Fashion

I was disappointed with the Levi's 541s. They fit better than other jeans, but still had to get a pretty loose waist to get a comfortable fit around the thighs. I fit a size 34 waist, but my thighs are 28ish inches. The best fitting jeans I've found are Urban Star jeans from Costco. They fit comfort...

Re: Dealing with abuse at work

I think Edith's advice is excellent. In your exact situation, I've used, "Hookers are expensive, man. Gotta save pennies somewhere."

Or pull a Marcus Aurelius: "I'm glad you disapprove; it tells me that I'm making good choices."

Grinning is mandatory with either response.

Re: Do people just give up after 25?

I've noticed some older people who appear to have given up on life, but I don't think it's because they're old. Usually they're in a horrible marriage, and I suspect that's the culprit. It may just be a symptom though. I think the giver-uppers are in the minority. It's definitely common for people t...

Re: Sam Harris - Idiot?

I think there is something to be said for not unequivocally accepting the opinions of super-geniuses outside of their primary field of specialty. I wonder if the world has always been this way (where experts opine on things outside their area of expertise and people eagerly listen), or if it's a ne...

Re: Reading

In our discussion, one friend put it down to time or age, the other to limited attention span because of other media and doing stuff online. I personally think it’s probably a combination of all of that. I also read constantly at work, on screens, and I think eye fatigue is a factor as well. I susp...

Re: Greetings from Alaska

Thanks Wolf! Do you have any mid-term / long-term milestones or goals? I tend to do better with process goals than outcome goals, and right now my main goal is spending less than half my income. In terms of milestones, I'd like to have $100,000 in investments and at this rate I'll be there in the ne...

Greetings from Alaska

I'm 22. In my adult life thus far I've been a lot less consumerist than those around me (thank you Marcus Aurelius), and I ready Mr. Money Mustache for a while before finding Jacob's blog about a year ago. MMM was very helpful, but ERE opened up my eyes to a whole new level of frugality that I previ...

Re: C40 & 7W, Relationship Book suggestions?

Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion by Dr. Robert Cialdini is really excellent. It's not necessarily about dating, but the information is relevant. It teaches how to sell, and the initial stages of dating are all about selling yourself. I ought to give the caveat that although I've dated a lot ...
