Re: L's Journal

I gave notice for the job I don't like last Friday!

There is a three month notice period, so my last day will be the end of July.

After that hopefully I can find a different part time job that fits better, without the qualities this one had that's made it so frustrating for me.

Re: Systems!- Level 6 towards 7

On whether high-level strength is a necessary part of my life if I can't think of a systems way of building it in yet - I do think it adds value to my life to do strength training. The thing with strength training is that you lift something heavier / tougher than you might usually lift, because that...

Re: L's Journal

On my walk today, I was trying to pay extra attention to different plants that I walked past. It's the same route I've been before, in the city, and I spotted so many different types of plants, including at least 10 I couldn't identify! So that's exciting. I'd like to learn to identify plants better...

Re: Systems!- Level 6 towards 7

Yeah, at the moment with exercise, I'm at the point where I think it's nicely possible to integrate cardio into transport needs without spending two hours a week jogging to nowhere on purpose, but I can't think of that many ways of integrating high-level strength work unless you're a professional fu...

Re: "how to talk to others" vs "this is ere"

The hours for gauging mastery and the 6 Cs always seemed to me to be about competence in particular skills (such as bicycle maintenance, gardening, etc.), whereas the Wheaton levels are more about the overall mindset. So one can be an apprentice or using Copying in one skill (me when I try sewing) w...

Re: Food and climate change

I think when it comes to native vs non-native, "technically non-native but has been growing here for hundreds of years already" gives enough time for it to be considered naturalised. But yes, the goal should not be to make all areas globally look like the type of forest historically found ...

Re: Food and climate change

I'm only just learning about permaculture but I think one of the points of permaculture is that it *isn't* a monoculture, with small amounts of a lot of diverse plants.

Re: Systems!- Level 6 towards 7

I went back to the WL5, WL6, WL7 descriptions jacob gave on a previous page of this thread and am attempting to come up with some examples for each to try and understand them better, assuming money as the initial primary yield. I'm just coming up with these examples now so I don't know if they're co...

Re: Systems!- Level 6 towards 7

I think what people are getting at is that criticism of the model doesn't belong in "people who have already seen the model is imperfect and decided to use the model anyway" thread, but in a different thread such as the thread about the model or a new separate one. I just had a thought of ...

Re: Systems!- Level 6 towards 7

I wasn't intending to send the discussion to focus on social capital when I brought it up, I was just trying to understand 6 and 7 through the example of my own life and it's been a prominent theme for me lately, FWIW.

Re: Systems!- Level 6 towards 7

I think this is probably definitely why I'm still level 6, then - I'm definitely still at the stage of gaining the skills I need to produce the nonmonetary yields. But I'm making progress with a lot of them. But I think I am starting to make connections between the different skills, too.

Re: Systems!- Level 6 towards 7

Well, the point of different types of capital isn't that one is more advanced. It's more that, at the beginning, people are inclined to see one or two as more important/easier to get (in my case financial and skills capital), and as your understanding moves to a new level, you reach the limitations ...

Re: Systems!- Level 6 towards 7

I'm not sure if I have anything great to contribute to this thread or not, since I've only just recently felt comfortable identifying my thinking as level 6, so I'm at the point where I think 7 sounds like a good idea but don't really know how one would get there, I think. Not 100% sure on my own es...

Re: L's Journal

Oh, the folding bicycles! I don't have one of those but I've seen them. Probably I'll just end up getting whatever bike I can find second hand though. I was getting extremely lonely in the countryside. I think my village had experienced a sort of hollowing-out - the main groups of people there were ...

Re: L's Journal

I don't know who the bromptons are, I'm in a small city in north west England. xD But I'm enjoying city life so much more than country life already, even with half of the things being shut due to COVID.

Wow, that's a really cool project in that video! He must really know the city a lot better now. San Francisco is a lot bigger than my city, too. I think once I sell my car I'll really start to get to know more of the city. I already walked into the city centre once, and I've been a couple of other p...

Re: L's Journal

I'm still not enjoying the job that I'm planning to quit. I can't remember if I said this above, but I'm planning to give my notice at the end of April, which will trigger a three month notice period. This will ensure certain things get done that could be done with not being done by someone who just...

wants to minimize personal ecological impact, he wouldn't live in a city and own a car I don't think it's necessarily accurate to suggest that you can't live ecologically in a city. Unless we're all expected to run full time permaculture homesteads, well-chosen city lifestyles can easily perform we...

Re: The ERE Wheaton Scale

Yeah, there's a difference between philosophy and action for sure. Philosophically I'm at the point where level 6 ideas sound like great ideas and things I want to do, but in practice I keep only dabbling in them or thinking "I'll do them after I've done X". I don't think schisms and suchl...

Re: The ERE Wheaton Scale

I don't think jacob needs to be the one bringing the concepts to the masses, necessarily. As more people get into related concepts, those people can focus on spreading the message more widely if they're suited to that work. For instance, MMM has done a great job at reaching the "medium to high ...
