Re: Pilgrim's Progress

I would probably suck it up and deal with the LL visit if it means she will be paying for the fixes, especially as it starts adding up. Again, as others have said, you are saving her hundreds per year by doing things yourself so she should be appreciative and treat you like the top tenants you are. ...

Re: Pilgrim's Progress

I agree that a small fix that you can do yourself, such as the toilet valve, is just easier to do vs relying on landlord. Other options could have been to tell him/her, offer to fix it yourself and withhold it from your next rent payment. In the end $12 doesn't break the bank but every little bit he...

Re: Pilgrim's Progress

Your budget was pretty crazy for Jan both from an income and spending category.

One thing that stands out is the internet bill, is that just 1 month? Does it include cable? It seems very high to me.

Re: Pilgrim's Progress

Interesting way to think about it, but there are some massive assumptions in here. First off I would say that 4% is among the lowest projected returns i have seen ... as is 3% SWR. Both of these compound to draw out the timeline significantly so perhaps rerun this with the still very safe but perhap...

Re: Semi-ERE Year 3 - Wanderlust Prevails

I think the approach of going with multiples and percentages is more of a fair comparison and keeps it less specific for the OP. Otherwise it turns into a race for lower spending/lower WR and this just avoid any churn like that.

Re: Pilgrim's Progress

Just stumbled across your journal, interested to follow along. I agree with you all regarding making sacrifices that in turn cause more harm than good. We just went through a downsizing effort but wouldn't be surprised to see us get another home in the mid term where acquiring stuff becomes more of ...

Re: ERE Travel Thread

I'm not a particularly active member here, mostly lurking the journals and admiring you all for your frugal determination. My wife and I are currently slow traveling through Europe, we are in the Algarve near Portimao as we speak and probably through the end of March. We can meet up outdoors with pe...

Re: Jiimmy's Charts

I pop onto ERE every once in a while because while I could not make it on the frugal budgets most obtain here, I find that mentally we're on very much the same wave length. I too am a bit of an excel/data nerd but I lack the structure to keep track of it all. My wife isn't interested in it either wh...

Re: Frugal chicos journal - ERE in Spain

Always love keeping up on your blog, I love how you two have really aligned priorities and are able to live the life you have dreamed of. A year from now you could very well be seeing your spending drop significantly below $1k per month with 10 month's worth of expenses being put away. Congrats on a...

Re: Frugal chicos journal

Super impressive to see how dedicated you have both (all 3??) been to this journey and are making your dreams a reality. We are in a bit of a similar situation whereby we could use a house (not totally rent free though) that my parents own. It was very recently renovated and could be a great spot fo...

Gelukkig nieuwjaar!

Ah that makes sense, better to be a bit safer. I keep reading that the Netherlands is a pretty terrible country for FIRE due to taxes. What do you anticipate as far as drag on returns from taxes?

Re: Wishmaster's journal

Super impressive expenses, with the reduced housing cost it sounds like you might be able to save about 1500 euro per month, that should quickly accelerate your FI path. Are you planning on pulling the plug as soon as your liquid stash can throw off ~800 euro per month or are you going to take it a ...

Re: Semi-ERE Experiment - Month 5 - Unemployed, Now What?

A much more important criteria for where we live will be access to things we want to do. I plan on doing a whole lot of MTB, SUPing, hiking, cycling, and would love to get back into snowboarding. So if there are places in the midwest that are near smaller cities with good cultural scene, and activi...

Re: Semi-ERE Experiment - Month 5 - Unemployed, Now What?

My take on barebones number crunching is to drive home the point of optionality, for people to realize that they are already independent from a basic needs perspective. I would hope nobody sets that as the end goal but rather an important milestone to take a mini-retirement or let passion become mor...

Re: JollyScot's Journey Starts

Thanks for the elaborate response. Seems like I forgot to mention that I am an EU citizen so it should be very easy to get into any of the 3-4 countries we are considering. Portugal also has the option for the 10 year tax free visa, which we are considering once I pull the plug and we live off of my...

Re: JollyScot's Journey Starts

Just read through basically all of your journal, very fascinating to see the evolution throughout the past 4 years. I am based in the US currently with plans to move to Western Europe in the next 3 years. France seems like a decent option despite what I had read about taxes. We are currently leaning...

Re: Zankas poker-journal

Haha :) Nah I do not use any programs, thankfully the site Im playing at is doing all they can to prevent it. I assume some computer-wizard have made a program to do it but most players are probably playing without it. I have used them before but I definately prefer to do without. It shifts the gam...

Re: Zankas poker-journal

I have noticed Hold'em games getting increasingly difficult to beat by wide margins. I have been playing a lot more 8-game, HORSE, HOSE or any other mixed game to up my win rate. Does anyone else play mixed games? Never really got into mixed games other than very very minimal Omaha. I started playi...

Re: Zankas poker-journal

Fellow former poker player here as well, we aren't so uncommon after all :-) I have been toying with the idea of starting to play a bit again, I live in one of the few jurisdictions where it is legal in the US and player pools being merged has certainly helped with traffic. Hopefully when PA comes o...
