Are you not impacted by the tapered thresholds? One of my biggest pet peeves with the U.K. system is the tapered nature of pension contributions (vs the US where everyone has access to the same cap).

Re: Buying a home without a job after retirement

If you’re buying cash for a single family home you should be fine. If you need financing then obtaining a mortgage may be a bigger issue.

+1 to unemployable if you do need financing.

Stonework renovations on house are complete. They look fabulous. The bill hasn’t arrived yet! The space between the last two sentences is the happiest you’ll ever be with the work  Glad to hear things are going well. I’m curious that you see the interest expense outweighing the tax break? I su...

Re: ERE or Semi-ERE past Age 65

Geo-arbitrage may be an option if available to you. I’ve begun discussing LTC preferences with my parents. They are well-off enough to have multiple options; I was initially surprised when my father mentioned his plan of living in their house in Portugal and just hire nurses. Perhaps initially part ...

The thing that sucks about an annuity, is you could be one of the losers. Pay the $300k buy in and die 6 months later. This risk can be sliced and diced in any variety of ways. But it's never free. To be fair I’m not sure this matters all that much unless you’re equally concerned about leaving an e...

Re: How is the FIRE movement doing?

Not so sure about FIRE in the traditional sense but the impacts of inflation seem to be bringing frugality back to centre stage. See here: https://www.buzzfeed.com/meganeliscomb/frugal-habits-people-love I actually wasnt aware Buzzfeed was still around but that popped up on my Apple News feed and I ...

Nice. I find that I only drink socially and I’m not that social. The few times I overimbed the last few years (maybe 5-7 times in 5 years) the hangovers were never worth it. Usually it’s at work events but this past Xmas work party I just avoided it as I had an early flight the next day. Was interes...

What do you mean re: different personality / wildly different women? I never cease to be amazed that despite two children, a full time job, and everything else in your life you still manage to be so productive. We moved into our new house 3 weeks ago and every weekend I have plans to do so much and ...

Re: Marriage: how to maintain it

+1 to @Seppia I’ve only been married 2+ years so perhaps not the best placed to answer, but compatibility in viewing it as a partnership and a focus on the “we” aspect is what works for us. Marriage is a partnership above all else. Both people need to do 50% of what needs to be done, though not nece...

Re: How far are you willing to walk to work?

@Walwen - you might consider cycling if the weather or time becomes an issue. It would significantly cut down your time with that sort of distance. I started cycling to and from work about 2 years ago (previously was walking + metro + walking). It’s about 3 miles / 5km each way, takes about 20-25 mi...

Google voice can partially work - I have it and I receive texts.

However some banks, etc won’t let you sign up with a Google voice only number (I’m not sure how they know but I’ve been rejected a few times). Most of mine are fine.

Re: White Belt's Military Journey to FI

Would you enjoy better mortgage rates (and/or easier time getting one) if you were still enlisted? I thought there were certain programmes that catered to military?

Not trying to derail your planned path but may be worth looking into if you haven’t already.

Congrats!

Germany and Austria generally do not, although certain rare exceptions are granted. Most EU countries do not have any restriction on holding multiple nationalities.

@Ego: It’s a whole house renovation + loft conversion so I’m running new ducts. I think I’ve figured out the best way to get them to the eaves which should minimise any ugly boxouts but I will need some as I need to cross a steel beam which is in line with the joists. The link you sent is a similar ...

Bathroom extractor fans / Positive input ventilation

I’ve been struggling with this one and thought I may get some good answers here. I’m currently undergoing a house renovation and want to ensure I allow for proper ventilation (both extraction and input) given all the work I’m doing to insulate and improve air tightness. Originally I was thinking of ...

They do. They have a joint venture with Skanska in the Nordics called BoKlok.
