Re: Max's Rebound from Academia

Thought I'd put this thought here and come back and think later about whether it is optimal nutritionally and financially: Favorite meal is olive oil sauteed vegetables and mushrooms with a little bit of garlic salt. Sometimes with oven baked salmon. I believe I could eat this every day. Secret to l...

Re: Max's Rebound from Academia

It occurred to me while I was responding to someone's "boredom at work" thread that I spend an hour a day at work playing table tennis with the other developers, which is like 13% of my working day and like 13% of my salary.

I guess that means I've effectively gone pro.

Re: How to cope with boredom at work?

Part of the problem is I work in a open office floor plan and my manager sits directly behind me so my ability to go "off task" is limited. If I ask for more work, they usually just give me busy work and I'm not terribly interested in the work itself anyway, so more work ends up just cont...

Re: Alternatives to Google News?

Google News recently switched to a "minimalist baby"-format with tonnes of white space and about 1/3 of the information density of the "classic" format. Why, oh why is the internet increasingly being designed for people who type with their thumbs and mouth the words they're read...

Re: Coding for Kids

Also, I second prognastat's reference to Automate the Boring Stuff. That is a good kicking off point for learning to make things happen. But from my experience I didn't learn to write clean code with Python perhaps because I only ever used Python for fun and not professionally. It wasn't until I mov...

Re: Coding for Kids

@horsewoman - find something your child loves already and find a way for her to develop software/games around that love. That interest could literally be anything as there is software for anything and case in point almost every company today is in part a software company. I'm a big proponent of star...

Re: Max's Rebound from Academia

I asked myself 2 months ago if there was anything useful in my daily life that I could write software for. I found the "DIY software development and/or electronics?" thread but am posting details here for easier tracking. The info I took from there is access to Plaid. The main problem I se...

I was looking for something like Plaid, so I'm glad to have found this thread. Thank you people.

Re: AAII Journal giveaway

If there're any left, I'd like one. Do I PM you details?

I wanted to subscribe to it since you made the recommendation at your place, but my logic at the time was that I didn't have enough capital and experience to make the subscription a profitable endeavor. :D

Re: Max's Rebound from Academia

Kroger just raised the price of a gallon of milk from 1.29 to 1.59, a 23% increase. Carrots have remained at 49 cents/pound and potatoes at 79 cents/pound over the last 6 months. I'd be fairly annoyed if my food expenses went up 23% overall. Milk is the only drink I pay for. Got a 13% raise so my sa...

Re: The benefits of a basic income // much higher min wage

Campitor, is the Freedon Dividend supposed to be "new money" (i.e., print an extra $3T of new money every year)? I thought I remember him saying it was supposed to be funded by a federal tax on the big internet retailers or something similar. That's what I remember him saying. I understoo...

Re: The benefits of a basic income // much higher min wage

Instead of UBI, I would reform our pension system. (refering to the swiss system) Turn compulsory payment from ~15% to ~85%, change pension age from 65 to 28. Voilà. This would cost nothing, this would teach people that they are happy on little money... @Jean, Opinion: An obligatory savings rate im...

Re: The benefits of a basic income // much higher min wage

Despite being set-up as a pay-as-you-go (aka a pyramid) scheme, the average person thinks they have earned their payouts. @Jacob, My grandpa lived to be 98. He was a 50's man born in the early 20s, really conservative, anti-communist and anti-socialist. In his final years(he was retired for 30 year...

Re: The benefits of a basic income // much higher min wage

So in order for the government to hand everyone $12K/yr they need to up the average tax bill by somewhat over $12K. Dave, I find this awesome and common sense. It reminds me of a conversation I had with my cousin last week. I asked him if he had a problem with the border wall because it was so expe...

Re: The benefits of a basic income // much higher min wage

Not sure how you can avoid the negative impact of inflation, price increases, and increased GHG emissions that will occur. There are no free lunches in a finite world with finite resources. When I was living in Madison I joked with my friends that I was immune to inflation because somehow I always ...

Re: The benefits of a basic income // much higher min wage

I skimmed through this thread and there was a lot of discussion about whether people would be changed or saved by UBI. Andrew Yang attempts to make the case that it would "take the boot off of people's throats." A lot of people had negative views towards the concept and its feasibility, bu...

General Update

I took a new job as a developer in Cincinnati. It's a web application developer position with the UI in Typescript, the API in C#, and the framework in Angular. My last job was a glorified and well-paid debugger/high-end customer service position and was deeply unsatisfying. The health care industry...

Re: Max's Rebound from Academia

1) round up to next number (whether the next round $10, $50, $100, whatever seemed reasonable) and set the autopayment on that. I still have this setup on my mortgage, and I'm pre-paying the principle by around $250/month. 2) Treat pre-paying like spending. Sometimes I would have that "feeling...

Re: Max's Rebound from Academia

One thing that might help with paying of debt vs savings is to focus on your net worth rather than your savings as your net worth will go up regardless of whether you put it towards debt or savings. Prognastat, Net worth would mean something to me if the debt I have was tied to a physical asset or ...

Re: Max's Rebound from Academia

When I was getting out of student debt on an entry salary, I first made a list of my student loans and ordered them by interest rate, highest to lowest. I made minimum payments on all, made the minimum contribution to my employer's retirement plan, and hoarded the rest in cash. Once I had enough ca...
