Re: Hristo's FI Journal

I'm hopeful that there will eventually be a space for us as a group in the public sphere somewhere. I was having a conversation last week with a friend--who is another conservative--about the whole CC thing, and he asked if I ever just laugh to myself when I talk to people about CC stuff and they a...

Re: Hristo's FI Journal

Wow, tracking down that post where @Jacob suggested I check out Kingsnorth (https://forum.earlyretirementextreme.com/viewtopic.php?p=229242#p229242) prompted me to re-read some of the "A Conservative Policy Solution to Slow Down Climate Change?" topic (https://forum.earlyretirementextreme....

Re: New Kingsnorth Substack Essay - No Paywall

Thanks for turning me on to this guy. I read the one you linked to before going back to the start of the series (Blanched Sun). A skilled writer, and poignant. Reading things like this always leaves me a little saddened that I can't figure out a way to do more. Credit goes to @Jacob https://forum.e...

Re: New Kingsnorth Substack Essay - No Paywall

Maybe, but how? . . . I appreciate/hope you being willing to entertain this. Consider that the current Pope [Francis] is leaning more Green than Blue (laudato si). Is it possible to speculate on what a Turquoise pope or religion would look like? I don't follow or think much of the whole color/spira...

It's likely that we need better morals and better math.
Ha! I like that. Though I wonder if the morals that we got from natural law (see Aristotle or his parallels in the East) were based on an instinctual understanding of that better math.

Re: New Kingsnorth Substack Essay - No Paywall

@7w5 I take his point--or, at least, what I took from this particular essay, when put in the context of this entire essay project thus far, and coupled with his Beast and Alexandria and his other more recent writings--as not having really anything at all to do with simply cutting Pleasure out of the...

I'm hoping he puts together these essays in some type of book.
+1. At this point I'd offer to pay to publish the essays as a book myself.

Re: Why-vector reasons for living - Having, doing, being, seeing

+1 @mountainFrugal. I've wondered whether it's just wisdom gained from getting older, but I remember scoffing at certain passages from the Tao Te Ching, about staying put, when I first came across it probably in college. Now, however, I see the wisdom in it better. E.g., - Ch. 80: “Though the next c...

Re: Transfer from Betterment to Vanguard

Agree with @GdP. I transferred old 401Ks/rollover IRAs to Vanguard (from Fidelity) and I just called their customer service folks and they walked me through it. Easy peasy.

Re: Emergence of the Literature of Climate Change

Almost forgot: https://www.amazon.com/dp/023116954X/ ... has the most realistic physics/politics of any fictional book published. It was deliberately made so. As such the fiction/story suffers. The year is 2393, and the world is almost unrecognizable. Clear warnings of climate catastrophe went igno...

Re: mooretrees journal

Like the article suggested, I'm not convinced that what schools teach is what my son needs to learn. However, I don't really know what they actually teach so I'm speaking from my experience many years ago. I'm not writing off traditional school, but I am very curious how this year will set the tone...

Re: Emergence of the Literature of Climate Change

@7w5: Thank you for that; a lot to think about there. FWIW, I don't think Alexandria runs afoul of any of the criteria you've outlined for what bothers you about some post-collapse novels, far from it (I'd still start with the Wake and then the Beast , as those novels frame Alexandria ). Lately I ha...

Re: Emergence of the Literature of Climate Change

It does seem to me that there is a “danger” in mixing together desire for return to pastoral or fresh open frontier or age of the warrior utopian fantasy with narrative based on scientific reality. . . . This may not be what you're talking about (I've not been following this thread terribly closely...

Re: mooretrees journal

To the extent it's helpful, I went down the homeschooling rabbithole briefly a little while back, and it's definitely information overload for something that I think at it's core really isn't that complicated. But, that said, I found this helpful as a sort of very basic intro: https://simplycharlott...

Re: mooretrees journal

Looking forward to hearing how the homeschooling goes. If we had to do it over again, that's the direction we'd go. And it's still not out of the realm of possibilities that we might switch to homeschool for high school; but it's not likely. We feel as if we have more control over our kids' educatio...

Re: White Belt's Military Journey to FI

We're big fans of Aldi, and buy almost all of our groceries there, except that we buy most of our veggies from Sprouts, which is usually cheaper than even Aldi (but just for veggies). Honestly, I've always felt completely lost and overwhelmed in a typical large grocery store (I tend to get physicall...
