Re: Hristo's FI Journal

I'm finding it difficult to get much work done in the new shoffice; and that's OK.

Re: A/C For Small Trailer/ Bus or alternatives

I'll probably take a few more days to decide, but based on the huge endorsement of window unit, I'll probably try to go window unit. The unti @Hristo sent looks like it will fit in my window. If I got this route, how should I seal the rest of the space? There are plenty of people with way more know...

Re: surprised by change and upredictability

These days I try and avoid dwelling too much on the more macro doomsday stuff; both for my own mental well being but also (mainly) because I came to realize that me constantly thinking about and going on about collapsist stuff was not creating a particularly healthy family environment. On a more mic...

Re: A/C For Small Trailer/ Bus or alternatives

If you have access to regular AC power, the window unit is the way to go. It's cheap and very effective. Cutting a whole in the side of the van is not hard and if you do it right, burglars will have a hard time removing it and bugs and outside air will stay out of your abode. This is the smallest w...

No doubt.

This was a good project for me to cut my teeth on, as it's not part of the house and it'll really only be me who is left to look at my mistakes for the next several years. Stakes will be a little but higher with the next project, which will be in the house.

Question about the low profile fan. Where did you get it? Link? How many inches does the bottom extend from the ceiling? https://www.homedepot.com/p/Home-Decorators-Collection-Ashby-Park-44-in-White-Color-Changing-Integrated-LED-Brushed-Nickel-Ceiling-Fan-with-Light-Kit-and-3-Reversible-Blades-5924...

First post from the "shoffice"; I still have the trim work to do (and then I need blinds for the window), but it was finished enough for me to finally get moved into. https://i.imgur.com/MIbTDKB.jpg https://i.imgur.com/vGNhhVA.jpg I ordered a small bluetooth amp/receiver to power those bad...

Re: Where do you get music?

We have the family spotify plan for 5 of us total ($17+tax for 6 slots I think). We enjoy music enough that it's really worth it. Same, though we have the 2-user account that we share among 4 people (the kids’ phones can’t download Spotify). We used to all share a single user account but I eventual...

Great update Suo; thanks for sharing. I've mentioned before that DW is a clinical dietitian, and she "figured out" food a long, long time ago; not just the science of it, but what a healthy relationship with food looks like. It's all second nature to her. She came to mind a lot when I was ...

Re: bostonimproper's journal

Filial piety Thanks for sharing this update; I empathize and have been struggling with much of this myself, which is part of why we moved back home. I've not gone back and looked at my ridiculously rambling journal entries over the years, but I suspect I could probably pinpoint in there the point a...

Re: ERE City (US)

I'm primarily focused on what the right conditions for a scene are. The equivalent analogy here would be "the idea of an online forum---by no means a trivial concept insofar it wasn't so familiar" (as opposed to a mailing list = club). Since I'm not nearly as experienced in IRL scenes (in...

An update as it's been a few months (a quarter of a year, in fact), and I've got a lot on my work to-do list that I don't want to get started on. First of all, happy holy week to you all. Money: We officially (finally) joined the 2 comma NW club, which we celebrated with some sparkling wine. I've ha...

Goodness, this thread is giving me the opportunity to think back on some great times. I envy what you have coming; the toddler years are wonderful, but so are all the years you get to spend with your kiddos.

Re: Tips for toddlers?

+1 on the potty training. DD was potty trained at daycare by a beloved daycare worker who made it her mission to check that box for every kid that came through her class. DS, however, went to a different daycare at potty training age and it wasn't going to get done there, so I took 2 days off of wor...

I've never done this comparison before, but it looks like our family's net worth is pretty deeply tied to the strength of the US economy, or at least to the S&P 500.

Re: Hristo's FI Journal

Quick update,* as it's been a few months and my work to-do list is so overwhelming I'd rather just procrastinate for a little while than try and figure out how to tackle it. First of all, this is hilarious to look back at: First, I turn 45 this year and am going to try and hit a 1RM of the 1-2-3-4 &...

Re: what if you would have done this in life: Stay Hometown and "make a family" or Go Abroad and "make a career"?

@chenda: In post above, Hristo strongly implied that he was the sort of boy who would come to school with naked ankles. Full disclosure: I've always been more of a moccasin or "camp-moc" kinda guy; the only really acceptable "boat shoes" down here, as far as I'm concerned, are f...

Re: Marriage: how to maintain it

Love is a verb as well as a noun. This is good; well said. Aquinas defines love (as in the theological virtue of love) as the "choice to will the good of the other." I suspect you could be married 75 years and still have not fully unpacked that definition; I know I'm still working at it. ...

Re: Marriage: how to maintain it

My 2 cents, perhaps not worth even that amount: Cent 1: We think prioritization is important --> priority 1 is God; priority 2 is spouse/marriage; priority 3 is kids (depending on the day I might put one kid above another ; as in, I'm not too thrilled with DS right now as he just kicked the soc...
