Re: Alcohol moderation

I'm six weeks without alcohol at this point and feeling great (and saved a bit of money). Is everybody still doing this? We are mostly still doing this. We drank NYE and then have had a couple cocktails and a couple beers thus far in January. But definitely no longer a daily drinker; probably 6 dri...

Re: Would 20M Radically Increase Your Happiness?

In 2021 I finally reached the exalted worth more alive than dead status. Then 2022 Zoomed me up the butthole. Same! Also, almost every Dateline episode: He or she takes on some new hobby, usually something like CrossFit; also, we learn that he has a 7 figure insurance policy (though, sometimes it's...

Re: Would 20M Radically Increase Your Happiness?

I'm not representing that my wife won't kill me. That's always to be considered in probabilistic terms. Question I recently received from a new dad: "How much should I get in term life insurance?" My answer: "Enough that your family will be comfortable, not so much that you will end ...

Re: Vasectomy? Child-free life?

All the above, plus the very instinctive and animal will not to be the carnivore dinosaur with duck-shaped beak that goes extinct because he can't bite anyone. Leave it to humans to reason themselves out of existence, and to also think that is a good thing. Adds some context and depth to the “forbi...

Definitely seems to help when you marry before you have money, at least wrt Biggie’s Mo Money Mo Problems logic. But, then, there all those dateline and 20/20 episodes where the hubby gets killed for the insurance money; so, problems indeed.

What are some good/compelling reasons to have, or net benefits of having, kids?
Socrates would demand that you define your terms. This is an impossible question to answer without first defining what you mean by “good” and “beneficial.”

Re: Vasectomy? Child-free life?

Although birthrates are falling in the west (and even more so parts of Asia) immigration is more than offsetting the decline in many cases. It's odd the article which @hristo linked to doesn't mention that. Indeed I think the percentage of Catholics in the US has sharply increased in recent decades...

Re: Vasectomy? Child-free life?

I’d been purposely avoiding clicking on this thread since it resurfaced cuz I knew it would be the sort of discussion that would (a) set me off and (b) cause me to ask myself wtf I’m even doing on this forum, as I often do recently. But, I can’t sleep (stress about my kids’ futures, naturally), and...

Re: EDC porn

Who am I kidding; I’ll just stick with what I’ve got already. Which ain’t nothing. In addition to the previously mentioned hiking pack, a 20+ year old Gregory impulse that is still going strong, and a beautiful leather messenger style briefcase I inherited from my dad when he retired, which is in fa...

@HB: A smaller collection exists on their site that is still built in the United States.
Ah, thanks! I don’t think that price is crazy assuming this is in fact not a disposable product and is in fact “the” bag.

Re: EDC porn

My standard "walking around" outfit is kinda expensive. GORUCK GR2 (I hemmed and hawed for half a decade and finally bought one a couple of years ago, no regrets! I paid $250 or something on eBay) and eventually added a 30lbs plate in the laptop compartment (much better than hauling dumbb...

415 pages in to a book called “Moby Dick” and still no sight of the book’s namesake.

Re: Dedicated Etiquette Thread

@basuragomi, I like that way of looking at it: etiquette as another form of communication (I'm sure I'm butchering your point), which it of course is. A related discussion came up during my Thucydides seminar, when the topic of the credibility and/or historicity of Thucydides' practice of quoting pa...

Re: Dedicated Etiquette Thread

A lifetime's worth to unpack here; good stuff. If I saw an Emily Post type character sitting around at one of our shrimp boils or fish fries observing and taking notes so that she could write a blog post or substack or something about "the ways and mannerisms of the coastal redneck," I'd ...

I appreciate etiquette as a subject--did cotillion as a middle schooler,, have been to countless social etiquette/networking events through law school and BigLaw firm life, we regularly host and are hosted as that is much preferable to "going out"--and I will certainly be on the look out f...

Re: 529 Plan: A new tax-deferred investment option?

So, does this mean that if one or both of our kids decide NOT to go to college (something I often pray happens!), or get scholarships, or grandparents pay for college, or college expenses miraculously become "free," this means that we can rollover their 529 account money into retirement ac...
