Re: Hristo's FI Journal

Kingsnorth’s essay, in my beloved First Things of all places, has left me speechless. All I can say, as is almost always the case after I read Kingsnorth, is: “yeah, what he said.”

Re: Hristo's FI Journal

In case it may elicit further interest, it does NOT have a Wheaton/Overton structure. The so-called Tier1 are simply arranged by when these value-systems (color-coded) appeared in human history, e.g. red (tribalism), blue (traditionalism), orange (modernism), green (postmodernism). The critical sim...

Re: Hristo's FI Journal

Putting together your model of everything that somehow includes the H2 molecules hanging around the left side of alpha centauri probably means you are more likely to trip on the curb. When I hear someone say someone else needs to "get out of their head," it's this kind of systemizing* tha...

Are you ripped yet? Anecdotal aside, for a few months now DW has been working out with the "growingannanas" YouTube woman (https://www.youtube.com/c/growingannanas), mostly because with her new schedule she can really only go for long runs a couple times a week now when the kids are at so...

This genre of idea is what I'm spending a lot of my time on right now, as I'm in the position to reset/redefine what my "end" is, with remarkably few constraints. I hope you'll share your thoughts here as you work through it. And CONGRATS on the big life transition (I love how casually yo...

God help us, another Wheaton Level Table. Just what I need, academics showing me what "level" I'm on and what it might look like if I were "enlightened" and a member of the "Second Tier." https://i.imgur.com/yINKmNl.png I think this is what Ross Douthat was talking abo...

This one is what I had in mind. :)
Oh I've had much rantier rants than that one, starting way back on page 2 of the 44 page journal: viewtopic.php?p=171809#p171809 and viewtopic.php?p=171912#p171912

When I read your original rant,
Ha! Which rant is the original? This journal is essentially nothing but rants (along with less and less detailed financial updates).

Looking forward to the slam poetry video; I hereby relinquish my copyright in my May 11, 4:45pm post, so have at it.

Wearing sunscreen (at least 30 SPF and reapplying) is also vital. It prevents skin cancers and wrinkles. Plus it keeps my skin lighter; otherwise, I get really brown (versus tan). I have nothing against being dark; however, living in the US, people seem to think asking, “Are you Indian?” is okay. T...

Re: Hristo's FI Journal

My comparison with Catholicism wasn't about the religious aspect but more about the structure and rules. Catholicism is a little unique among Christian faiths in that one can't be 'born again' and instantly welcomed as a member. There are lots of hoops to jump through which I equate with the ERE 'l...

A little late for a monthly round-up, but better late than never (or perhaps not). On the net worth side, I keep waiting for the stock market to come crashing down (perhaps today? looks like the S&P is off to a really bad start); and I know I'm like the billionth person to say this, but this shi...

I was watching an HBO show about couples in therapy, Just as a quick aside, DW and I watched this show last week during a free trial (it's on Showtime, though at this point I've no idea whether or not HBO and Showtime (and Disney, and Apple, etc. etc.) aren't all just one big corp.), and it was an ...

Re: A Journey of Mindfulness--the Remaking of Life in Midstream.

FWIW, my own process for attempting to roughly track home value for purposes of tracking our net worth is to take the average of the estimate for our house from Zillow (always insanely high for us), realtor.com (tends to be about right), and redfin (generally quite a bit low). Our home is actually ...
