Re: bostonimproper's journal

Thanks all for your musings on recognition and status. Feel free to continue the conversation. For now, a journal update: Filial piety I had a call with my mother the other day. She’s a real estate agent, has been one for decades. There was a recent NAR settlement that’s likely to change the game bi...

Re: What doesn't kill you might make you dumber?

My brother has been experiencing long COVID symptoms for about 4 years at this point. He is currently on a plant based whole food (anti-inflammatory) diet to try and manage it. His take has been the diet has helped him feel healthier generally, but in ways that are distinct from the effects of long ...

Re: A Journey of Mindfulness--the Remaking of Life in Midstream.

Your post about your dad reminds me of my mother-in-law. She’s in her late 70’s and has had food issues her whole life (as in, very picky eating, no spices, only a few “safe” foods), and her diet at this point has winnowed down to sweet baked goods and yogurt drinks. She’s also showing early signs o...

Re: bostonimproper's journal

Milestone unlocked: we’ve hit a “leanFIRE” net worth for our household. It’s lower than I feel comfortable walking away with since it would involve spending less than we do now, but it is in the manageable range. My “real number” is probably unnecessarily high in the context of this forum. Also a la...

Re: bostonimproper's journal

@Chris @7w5 I appreciate the insightful posts. Thinking about it some more, I realize it’s less envy and more like competitiveness I feel (as my spouse can attest, I am a very poor sport). As someone who definitely believes that it’s a shame when people waste their time and talents going all in on g...

Re: bostonimproper's journal

Thanks all, I appreciate the well wishes and sympathy. Here’s hoping our toddler figures out sleeping through the night sometime soon. 🤞 Am I secretly a Type A careerist? So obviously I’ve been applying for jobs lately which means I’ve been spending more time on LinkedIn. I’ll see updates from forme...

Re: Future of Artificial Intelligence

Jesus Christ, it must be $$$$$ to train and run Sora. For reference, estimates for cost to run GPT-4 were on the order of $1MM/day. And OpenAI only made like $200MM in revenue last year. And none of that factors in any of their other expenses like staff, data cleaning, development infrastructure, et...

Re: Skill-based vs network-based work sourcing

I broke into product based on my network (some professor I had worked with’s PhD advisor was hiring for his startup). Otherwise nobody was taking a chance on me. So at least in my case I found networking really can help with career pivots. Most jobs I’ve had though I applied from job boards. I do th...

Muddling through I’m not thriving right now. I’m not spiraling either. Just muddling through. My daily schedule is split between parenting and work. Toddler wakes up at 6:00. I feed them, play with them, do a few chores together, and put them down for their morning nap around 9:00. Then I work unti...

Re: What I Spend

For what it’s worth, my husband and I found estate planning to be fairly easy. The biggest decisions were mostly around the who (power of attorney, trustee, etc) rather than the what. I know you said you’re not looking to chase small money, but if you’re willing to do churning based on ROI, I’d also...

Re: Tips for toddlers?

I’m surprised by the number of suggestions to potty train. Is this a generational thing? I’ve always assumed that would be a thing we’d do. I’ve heard of kids not taking well to it or having accidents, but not of parents not attempting it during toddlerhood.

Tips for toddlers?

As baby nears the one year mark, I’m starting to think about what it means to take care of a toddler. So for those who’ve raised little people to pre-school age, I ask you: - Any tips for “successful” toddler raising? - What things, if you could go back, would you do differently? - What memories fro...

Honestly the top signals seem kind of obvious? Like Elon Musk going on SNL, “to the moon.” It’s not exactly subtle. At the very least, you can follow some VC’s and when they start pumping their bags, you’ll know they’re looking for exit liquidity. Or when Vitalik sells his coins to donate you’ll kno...

It’s not about being right and it’s not about contributing equally. It’s about working as a team to make sure both your cups are full. Sometimes that means leaning in and doing more, sometimes that means saying hey my cup is empty and not martyring yourself. Don’t let things fester for the sake of m...

Thinking through what I want from 2024: Parenting Young toddler, here we come. Husband is still going to do the SAHP thing. We’ll probably do part time daycare when toddler is closer to 2.5 for the socialization and to get the year of endless sick days out of the way, so we’re looking at another yea...

It's crypto season again, NW back up 1.5 million lmfao.

If your networth doesn't have a +50% yearly volatility, what are you even doing? Are you even trying to retire bro?
I'm honestly flummoxed by how on-point the four year cycle seems to be. Not that I’m complaining.

I’m angry and unproductive at work right now and the job search is going poorly so I’m going to grade myself on my goals for 2023 because why not. Parenting First 6-8 weeks, just survive. @7W5 There’s honestly nothing that’d make this a tenable situation. My boss has already hinted that they can’t get design resources for me, who I consider 100% necessary for this sort of project/team, so it’s pretty obvious that since they can’t meet reasonable requests, there’s little chance with u...
