Re: Tulsi 2020: Anti-war Democrat says she’s running for US president
Huh, sounds like it might be worth a read. Which also reminds me that the novel Ship of Fools is on my to-read list; maybe I can get them as a package deal. It seems like what the Dems really need to do is reframe pacifism as ultra-patriotism. "I respect the troops... in fact, I respect them s...

Re: Tulsi 2020: Anti-war Democrat says she’s running for US president
Sure looks like it's tough to be a Democrat these days. Yeah, in the sense that people are going to drag up all the stuff you've ever said to use against you. I mean, over the past 20 years we've gone from 25 or 30% support for gay marriage to ~65%, so obviously people's beliefs can change radicall...

Re: Savings ratio more useful than savings rate?
I look at this as two ways of arriving at the same conclusion. With SR, I just think of it like 10% savings rate = work 9 years to not work 1, 25% savings rate = work 3 years to not work 1, 50% savings rate = work 1 to not work 1, 66% savings rate = work 1 to not work 2, 75% savings rate = work 1 t...

Re: Tulsi 2020: Anti-war Democrat says she’s running for US president
That's great news! I didn't realize there were any anti-war Democrats left. All the lefties I know have been shitting on Trump for not visiting the troops or for withdrawing from Syria, and I'm just here wondering when everyone in America became a neocon hawk when it comes to foreign policy. Nobody ...

Savings ratio more useful than savings rate?
Savings rate (savings/income) feels like a meaningless statistic to me- or at least, one with only indirect meaning. However, savings ratio (savings/expenses) has an inherent meaning- it’s how many years you could live off what you saved. Let’s say your SRate is 37% one year and 45% the next. Obviou...

I feel like that's how you end up as one of those people who stops working and hits existential angst inside of 6 months. Saving money is not the goal.

So, you're into adventurous/outdoorsy women, but climbers are too ,,masculine,, for you? Where's the middle ground there- someone who puts on a full beat face to go hiking?

Re: Help me continue my tiny house project?
Floor/foundation: How is the floor constructed? Is there any structure to it, or is it literally just floorboards on the ground? If the latter, you’d probably need to add joists to distribute the loads to the cinderblocks, or the floor could end up sagging. There’s also insulation to consider. Have ...

Excellent read! I left Boston at the beginning of the fall - I miss walking around the city. I'll always have very fond memories of my time there, not to mention the friends gained! Congratulations on the new job, hopefully you find it refreshing and challenging. Thanks for your kind words, bb. Hop...

So, you mean it's like watching someone who has been contributing to a problem and is now taking steps to try and end that problem? Because that sounds totally accurate to me.thegreatvoid wrote: ↑Sat Nov 24, 2018 5:17 pmLike watching a male feminist, or one of those white people talking about white priviledge.

Re: ERE vs Minimalism
The one connecting thread of all strands of minimalism seems to be reducing the number of material possessions (and one's attachment to them). I think this conflicts with ERE because they're essentially saying 'have as few things as possible' rather than 'have only the things you need'. A traditiona...

sleeping in a pitch black room Since when is this a component of fitness? I personally find I feel most rested if I go to bed early and let the light wake me up in the morning. Getting up to an alarm in a dark room just feels disorienting. But that's a personal preference, and I wouldn't assume it ...

Hello, and welcome! Do you have any information about your spending? It might be helpful to have a second (3rd,4th...nth) set of eyes to spot areas for savings. Also, have you considered investing any of your super money? Even putting it into government bonds or something would at least protect you ...

Just reading the abstract, it sounds like the findings boil down to 1. activation of brain regions associated with focus and pain modulation 2. increased blood flow/glucose consumption in muscles associated with breathing 3. no other bodily tissue affected. This sounds like exactly what you'd expect...

My two cents: whenever I don't do something I told myself I would, I remind myself that my brain is just a thin layer of rationality floating on top of a lake of heuristics and Pavlovian responses. So it's not that you didn't have the right resolve or willpower (which makes it seem like a moral fail...

October Spending All-time low this month of $165 on everything other than housing- $136 on groceries, $29 on eating out and shopping. (Assuming I don't blow any cash in the next four hours.) This seems like a fairly hard floor to me. Now that I've hit bottom, I'm thinking $200 or $250 would be reaso...

Re: Nerds, help! Router question
I don't know what a 'gateway' is, I assume that's just what Verizon calls a router modem in order to minimize the tech lingo their customers have to experience. All the FTTP/FTTC stuff means is where the fiber terminates and copper begins. Because it's impractical to run fiber all the way into your ...
