Re: "how to talk to others" vs "this is ere"
Yeah I knew it as soon as I hit send too - do as I say and not as I do and all that... poor form and I accept all charges. edit: Also adding here that I'm part of the problem too - wants lots of others to create whilst dropping now and then in to view the work. I doubt there's the critical ma...

Re: "how to talk to others" vs "this is ere"
Why is there a "vs" in the title of the thread? I don't see that the two work against each other. The book contains the theory. The table lets you orientate yourself in relation to how far out of Plato's cave you are. The 'ranking' of oneself that people enter into is a way letting others ...

Re: Systems!- Level 6 towards 7
I agree with the efforts to nudge the thread back on track. I suggested this separate thread might be useful given the benefits of the yields and flows thread 5 - 6. What I had in mind was that'd it'd be people comfortably within WL 6 helping each other out with a bit of guidance from people that ar...

Re: Systems!- Level 6 towards 7
It makes sense now - if you don't have enough nodes built/cultivated to a sufficient degree, there isn't really anything *to* conceptualize in a web. aaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh (usually followed by 'I see'). Am I right in saying then that both "built" and "cultivated to a suffici...

Re: Systems!- Level 6 towards 7
Thanks for setting up! I was looking at this earlier and there is a lot in the yields and flows thread on 6 to 7 as well as 5 to 6. If anyone starts to get lost as this thread evolves, maybe refer back to the yields and flows thread - it might be there is more work to do there (that's where I need t...

Re: The ERE Wheaton Scale
Given the value of the Yields and Flows WL 5 to 6 discussion, would there be any benefit in a similar thread for 6 to 7?

Re: Dealing with anger in the face of everyday evil
These are great questions and these can be quite stressful to think about and detrimental to one's mental health. I try to remember my own hypocrisy when it comes to ecological issues. I do my best and am learning all the time, but I remember all the daily mistakes I myself make even on a day when I...

Re: The ERE Wheaton Scale
The specialist mindset then sets about bulldozing upwards by playing the rules of the ERE game. I should add that I mean this in the box ticking way. Fundamentals are still fundamentals and why re-invent the wheel if some systems accelerate you that you can take off the shelf. @Jacob, you've just s...

Re: The ERE Wheaton Scale
The changes to the table and the discussion has jolted me out of creeping complacency. Has anyone else found the same? I’ve been thinking about how the discussion on this thread fits with the problems of specialisation as described in the ERE book and illustrated in graph form. Once the table was es...

Re: The ERE Wheaton Scale
I've found the most use out of it in the past is just figuring out where other people are at so I can communicate more effectively (not necessarily on an ERE level, but in terms of specific activities, lifestyle choices, or perspectives). I have to agree with this and it was one of the core points ...

Re: The ERE Wheaton Scale
Perhaps the savings rates at the bottom could all be nudged back 1 level to: L6 - 75% L7 - 100% L8 - N/A L9 - N/A L7 being 100% seems right as this is where there might be a runaway. FWIW, I think this table 'fogs' well: I'd place myself firmly in L5. I can visualise how my life might look different...

Re: Living a FI (Update)
I'm not so sure nomadscientist. The caveat is I'm not familiar with any of his writing beyond the shared post, but given the consensus emerging on this thread that this was a 'freedom from' move on his part, there was something about working sparked his journey in the first place. His version of FIR...

Re: leanFIRE and fatFIRE definitions
This is a hard question. I think JennyPenny articulated it well earlier on - some people seek to design their lifestyle from the bottom up (tending towards lean), others look to identify the minimum they can cut in order to FIRE (fat). So there is an element of philosophical outlook here that is dif...

Re: Living a FI (Update)
Happy to be corrected but I just wanted to check the terms used. The blogger framed 'lean fire' as a sub 4% wr, which for him was $30,000 annual spend. I only heard this lean fire/fat fire thing mentioned on one of Jacob's recent interviews. In my head I immediately figured 'lean' fire was defined b...

This podcast is great - lots of interesting stuff to listen to!
Fringe philosophy - it's almost like it's been designed specifically for people that hang around here.

Re: Mobile phone recycling
Great effort animal :) At least the receiver of the phone might have the ability to recycle most of the components. I was able to destroy an old iphone 3. Was able to break the plastic off the back and remove the battery. I then separated the screen intact. So all was left to do was to batter the ch...

This was a nice listen. I can't remember if it was this one or another recent podcast where you described the forums as like the grad school of these sorts of problems. I may have wandered into the wrong lecture theatre using a fake ID... Like many round here I've been bingeing as these new o...
