Re: Fixit Log

@SavingWithBabies Glad someone else hear has dealt with a similar issue. It's extremely frustrating because I have everything a home mechanic could ask for at my dad's place. But living an hour away and in an apartment (without a garage) makes otherwise simple repairs a huge pain. And it doesn't hel...

Re: Fixit Log

To make espresso reliably I use a burr grinder. I cheat and use an electric pump machine by Krups, but it still requires a very consistent grain sorting that I found I can only achieve with a burr grinder. I agree with the burr grinder. I was gifted one for Christmas by my wife and it was a complet...

Re: Fixit Log

My damn car battery was dead after having installed a new one three weeks prior. I didn't have access to my good tools and without a proper diagnosis I made the wrong assumption on what needed to be changed. I spent the better part of 4 hours removing the serpentine belt, unbolting the alternator, b...

Re: Something From Nothing Log

I sold a few more items that were destined for the dump. It amazes me how much unnecessary waste goes on in my neighborhood. I've chalked it up to people impulse buying items that were more of a novelty. Everything was sold on OfferUp for well below the used market prices. I sold an Aroma 20 cup cap...

Re: Something From Nothing Log

Sold a Sony Digital 8 handycam DVR-trv350 camcorder for $110 this morning. I found it in the alleyway a few months ago during one of my long bike rides. It came in a leather case with 2 batteries, charging cord, usb cord and 2 unopened tapes. I've managed to make $427 in trash sales so far. It's not...

Re: Something From Nothing Log

Found a few more thrown out items during my nightly cardio sessions. First was a table saw with all of the accessories and tools. I'm unsure of the brand since it's been covered with a custom dust collecting box. The previous owner also attached it to a metal table and welded locking casters to the ...

Re: Familial assistance

@DutchGirl You think 5 kids is bad? My dad came from a family of 13 and my mom came from a family of 6. Mexican immigrants from small towns where each child was an extra helping hand and the ticket to a 'full life'. They brought a bit of that mentality with them when they came to California. My youn...

Re: Familial assistance

I was never given direct financial assistance from my parents. Money was always tight since there were 7 mouths to feed (2 parents and 5 siblings) so it was frowned upon to ask for any money on perceived wants. I took that to heart very early on and became a bit of a miser. But with that came the de...

Re: Ultimatums that actually worked

@Miss Lonelyhearts Thank you MLH! I agree the restaurant business is very odd. Getting the job as a busboy was a challenge in itself. I had no prior work experience (does mowing ny parents lawn and babysitting my brothers count?) but luckily the same manager took a chance with me. A few years before...

Ultimatums that actually worked

During highschool I worked at a restaurant as a busboy making minimum wage ($6.75) + cash tips. I never made very much since I only worked ~15-18 hours a week. Each night I would pocket an additional $15-25 dollars in cash tips. My job duties included getting refills, pre-bussing (removing dirty and...

Re: Income sources other than ‘normal jobs’

I suppose it can be considered a 'normal' job if done regularly but I occasionally work for my friend's Brazilian BBQ catering company. He'll hire me on any time he needs an extra hand. I typically help with loading, unloading, setting up, breaking down, some light food prep work, and cooking. The m...

Re: Something From Nothing Log

I did it! I finally sold something on OfferUp. One of my neighbors moved our rather abruptly and tossed out a lot of valuable items. After she left, I grabbed the 900 watt Sunbeam microwave sitting next to the dumpster. After testing and some light cleaning I posted a few decent photos on OfferUp. T...

Re: Davtheram12's Journal

Great news! Since I've been unemployed, I've been visiting my dad more frequently (i.e. going to his doctor appointments as his advocate, creating diet and exercise plans, etc) and we had an interesting conversation. I was describing my plans with him about pursuing carpentry with my friend to which...

I live in a rather small apartment but have still managed to save plenty of plants people throw out. They are all doing wonderfully after some transplanting, fertilizing and watering. I honestly don't know what many of them are but my DW loves the extra color and vibrancy it brings to our apartment....

Re: Davtheram12's Journal

So inspired by Ego's success on the Something From Nothing Log, and my desire to make a little extra money on the side, I decided to sell things on OfferUp. Boy has it been challenging! I listed a microwave for $50 feeling rather optimistic. It was in great condition, worked well and looked great in...

How did you manage to temporarily slash your spending so much? Still in CA? Hey 2B1S! Well I'm still living in Santa Monica, CA. Unfortunately I was let go from my job, through no fault of my own (i.e. COVID-19), in August. Luckily I was able to claim unemployment in the mean time. That has provide...

Re: The Cult of Samin Nosrat

Fantastic book! I got a copy of the book shortly after I watched the Netflix mini series. It's one of the more enjoyable cook books I've come across since the first half is written like a textbook. She does a great job explaining the 'how' and 'why' of cooking while also making it fun and interestin...

@ classical_Liberal Hey CL! I've read many if your posts and really appreciate your perspective on things. Working as a health car worker definitely takes a special person. I can be a little unsympathetic and its definitely exacerbated when poor management doesn't help. I should have learned that be...
