Re: What doesn't kill you might make you dumber?

Just tagging onto what @Laura Ingalls said… I’d be curious which IQ test they were using and whether or not it was an abbreviated version (potentially less accurate). Also, I wonder about the sample: size as well as finding individuals who’d take the same test prior to COVID. Most adults haven’t tak...

As @basuragami said, you could get single rooms with shared bathrooms and the other hostels perks. Just a quick search: https://www.hostelworld.com/pwa/wds/s?q=Toronto,%20Canada&country=Canada&city=Toronto&type=city&id=67&from=2024-06-10&to=2024-06-17&guests=1&page=1 ...

Re: How is the FIRE movement doing?

@jp I think people who were anywhere between 6 and 20 during covid will be scarred for a long time. I was I firm believer in the moment that those who were locking down hard were severely underestimating the second order effects on the psyche of people. This is very obvious to me. They were robbed ...

Re: Laura Ingalls starts a journal

Thanks, I appreciate the field notes from a fellow middle-aged empty nester. We did some Cabo and San José de Cabo (kite festival) vacations in ours 30s. Like you, I enjoyed the desert and ocean combination. Driving and camping the Baja always sounded wonderful, though it probably it’s not very safe...

Re: The Education of Axel Heyst

I might be misunderstanding your question, but my current situation is not replicating my old codependent relationship with work. Due to doing a bunch of work on my codep patterns, I now a) believe in myself to the extent that I don't *need* validation hits from other people or organizations to fin...

I’ve been following along as you update. Would you repeat or go elsewhere next winter? What have you learned to optimize using AirBNB (It seems to be your preferred lodging option.)? Did you bus, fly, or drive?

Upthread you mentioned codependency with work. How does your current situation replicate that?

@chenda Wishing you and your family moments of peace… Just for fun, I checked out our local hospice’s website and learned I could save 10% over similar services at the hospital! I am beyond turned off. (Yes, I get that a nonprofit is simply another way to structure a business.) One must shop around ...

Re: ERE or Semi-ERE past Age 65

Hm…I am ever curious, if agency is highly valued, why self-selected termination is not discussed more. I think the biggest challenge would be timing, not ending things too quickly but not being trapped. A legal path would allow more choice of a gentle method supported by loved ones while decreasing ...

Re: 7Wannabe5-Take9-One Ordinary Day, With Peanuts

Well, f-in’ A, aging is sure an experience. For whatever reason I was thinking of winning a bikini contest at church camp when I was as 14 with 10 bandaids. Never again will life be so easy or my boobs so perky… Accepting life on its own terms…a task that hits us all at one point or another. Though ...

What ever happened to Steven Covey’s concept of win-win? The older I get, the more anaphylactic I am to these dichotomous paradigms.

Re: Trustee at a Charity

Yes, it would be good to get a firm idea of the time commitment and term length. What is the ratio of time spent on important things versus BS? I would also want to understand the composition of the board, to include tenure and turnover. Are there any conflicts or turf wars? (Are you expected to fix...

Re: Less is more

We become *identified with* the stories we tell ourselves about ourselves. The solution here is not to tell better stories. It is to let go of story. The needs will take care of themselves (so to speak) Yes and two more thoughts: 1) Many “needs” are actually “preferences.” 2) Identifying either, al...

Re: Adverse Selection - Why Insurance Costs What It Does

There seems to be no incentive for older healthy people with the ACA. It is assumed that increased age means a host of medical issues. That is not necessarily true. There is no discount offered. Our denial is massive. Every living thing dies. Sometimes that living thing has a genetic, environmental,...

Re: Less is more

This one might be somewhat controversial, but if you never acquire a certain skill, you'll never incur the costs associated with that particular skill and will have to solve the problems arising from not having that skill in a different way (perhaps using your social capital). The obvious example i...

Re: Less is more

Less action often means better action. We've been trained to immediately solve what we perceive as problems, most often by buying a solution. That's not always the best idea. Often, the problem will either go away by doing nothing, or a better/cheaper/durable solution will manifest itself with time...

Re: Tips for toddlers?

Typically toddlers are 1 to 3 years old. For whatever reason, changing diapers (and buying them) gets old. My two cents, when they are ready, they’ll practically train themselves. I had twins who potty trained at different times: DS at age 2, DD at age 4. Nighttime control happens/ed a bit later. No...

Re: Longterm holistic approach on health(care) without reliance on social security

The latest in the long-term care insurance: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/12/15/your-money/long-term-care-insurance-genworth.html My mom has been paying Genworth premiums for more than 30 years. Attempting to have conversations with her about this goes in circles. (Does that count as nowhere?) I don’...

it's also very important to not take on this responsibility for your partner. If you believe that they are likely to divorce you or take off if you make reasonable request or uphold reasonable boundary, then just be prepared to wave bye-bye. Yes, each person is responsible for themselves. Stay out ...

Re: Longterm holistic approach on health(care) without reliance on social security

I actually believe that my multi-millionaire friend might have been better able to get the very best care/treatment for his cancer during the lockdown if he was . He did basically bribe his oncologist by donating to a cause of her choosing, but his grouchy old entitled man behavior was so terrible,...
