Re: Randy's Journal
Been drifting away from the forums lately, but that doesn't mean I'm drifting away from ERE mentality/lifestyle. Was able to negotiate a 5k sign on bonus, combined with my 5k relocation bonus that I pocketed, I made an extra 10k with my transition from Germany to NC (it's good to be home). I was als...

Re: Randy's Journal
Thanks Viktor, that was a good read. Made me feel a little less guilty about asking for more. I’m surprised at how much the negotiations have blown up actually, something like three different levels of HR are arguing about it. I thought the person who sent the offer would be more prepared for some n...

Re: New member living just outside Philadelphia
@davtheram12, you should post some some of your recipes on the recipes thread. I would definitely like to see some tasty and simple Mexican dishes

Re: Randy's Journal
Time for the May wrap up already? I probably should have included that in my last post. May savings rate of 76%, net worth is just a hair away from 50k. Not bad for a month where I spent 3 days in Switzerland on vacation. This month I will spend another week there on vacation, I'm sure it won't be c...

Re: Finance Tracking options
Thanks guys, I appreciate all the advice! I definitely want my spreadsheet to have historical data. Looking at trends over time is most of the fun for me, and this is where Mint is sometimes not so great. I seem to find errors/inconsistencies I can't reconcile. But also the degree of historical data...

Re: Finance Tracking options
Okay, okay, so most people advocate their own spreadsheets. I already do some tracking/projections on my own, but I'll look at expanding this and optimizing into a better format. If anyone has tips for formatting or anything they especially like in their own spreadsheets, I'm all ears.

Finance Tracking options
Does anyone have advice on financial tracking software? This is something I’ve briefly asked about in another thread (thanks for the responses prognastat and Fish), but figured I should make it’s own thread. This isn’t a topic I’ve looked into in detail, and I’ve been using Mint pretty happily, but ...

Re: Life Traps Analysis from WSP
Anyways, after reading the article on dating from WSP, I am feeling the urge to write a companion piece for females who might care to profit from obvious fall-out of adoption of such practice Please do, I was wondering myself what such an article would look like. I wonder what the benefit is of tar...

Re: Randy's Journal
Thanks for the feedback guys. @TheRedHare, I've read JLCollins book The Simple Path to wealth, it was actually the first book I read on personal finance. I'm kind of surprised he's so anti-house, I'll give his ideas a look when I'm closer to considering the question of buying a house. So I'll be wra...

Re: Randy's Journal
On the investing side of things, I’ve just been sitting on my cash so far. This is something I still have to learn about, but every time I start reading I think about how much more fun it would be to watch paint dry. I’ve made a practice portfolio on yahoo finance just to get myself familiar with wh...

Re: Randy's Journal
I was invited to Wroclaw, and would really like the chance to go if I can squeeze it in a long weekend. I have to admit I really don't know much about Poland, except that I am terrible at Polish pronunciation

Re: Randy's Journal
April 2018 Savings rate 71%, net worth 48k All in all, not as bad as I thought it'd be considering there are some travel/vacation expenses in there for May as well. I'm finding the way I think about money is still changing. When I first really started looking at expenses in Feb/March I found that it...

Re: Frugal wedding
Congratulations! ...So if you're not going to have a party, what expenses do you really have for the wedding? The rings you mentioned, and then there is the legal paperwork, which is a fixed cost. Sounds like a pretty frugal wedding to me. On managing expectations/family reactions, maybe it's possib...

Re: Loan to a family member
I know it's a valid point about the ease of saying "no" - that was the lesson learned here and my aunt didn't even know how much money I have. That being said, I waffled on this decision because I personally thought there might have been a way for it to be beneficial for everyone involved....

Re: black_son_of_gray's Journal
I read through your journal after reading the thread about coasting to FI, and I want to say it's been a pleasure to read. I think your extended metaphors are getting better with time :) I can say without a doubt that reading your thoughts about chess and ERE has been the only time I've enjoyed thin...

Re: Loan to a family member
@suomalainen Why would I like to be transparent? Or why I might limit their info? I’d like to be transparent because I like my family and value their opinions. It would be great if they could support or at least understand my goals one day without thinking I’m being crazy. Why I might limit their in...

Re: Loan to a family member
Update for anyone interested: just heard word that my aunt isn’t going to pursue the house. Just too big of a change for her right now. I feel like I dodged a bullet, but I still would have helped if my aunt and I had reached an agreement. I’m glad I don’t have to go through the hassle though. I thi...

Re: Loan to a family member
I was going to call you out for buying your boyfriend’s niece a birthday present but I was afraid of appearing like a baby hating asshole (which I am). But I have absolutely no compunction in appearing like an Aunt buying a house hating asshole (which I also am). I’ve done enough reading on the for...

Re: Loan to a family member
Some clarification: this whole ordeal started with my mom half jokingly suggesting I buy the house and rent it to my aunt. Aunt gets to keep lower payments and I get a real estate investment. I don’t have the money or desire to do this. So then joint ownership was suggested. Again, no desire to have...

Loan to a family member
Okay, before everyone says what a bad idea it is, I know. I know it could get messy and should be very carefully done, but I’m considering it anyways. My aunt is considering buying a house that is adjacent to my parents (her sister) in pursuit of a quaint life of growing old near family. The house i...
