Re: Bitcoin on the rise
The tether problem is a double one: 1. It pretends not to be a fractional reserve bank but behaves exactly like one and is not regulated like one. They are not backed by usd, but only by usd-like paper. 2. $USDT is possibly used for market manipulation. Binance (and the likes) receive millions of us...

Re: Fire in Europe: Which portfolio composition?
For people in Belgium it's very interesting to invest in capitalizing ETFS or companies that are known not to pay dividends. Why? Because there is no capital gains tax if you're not a professional investor. And there is a 30% tax on dividends. Go figure the difference on 20 years of reinvesting divi...

Re: Purchasing a new laptop
Gonna follow this topic. The raspberry PI 400 looks interesting. I was looking for a solution/wetup where I can combine a monitor to connect with my work laptop (homeoffice), a basic homepc setup on the same screen and basic entertainment system. Investing in a decent monitor is not too expensive. T...

Re: You're Thinking About Home Heating Wrong, Ian Bogost, The Atlantic
We've got geothermal in our new home and it's ace. It only works efficiently in combination with low heat heating systems like floorheating or extra large radiators though. We've got floor heating which I find very pleasant. Ours also has an integrated boiler, the temperature is quite low but it's s...

Re: Bitcoin on the rise
@Ego But who are those other institutions? Other exchanges and Grayscale? Btw, regarding Grayscale. They are currently trading at 4% below underlying asset value. This is very strange. Seems like there is very little demand in the "real world" for those bitcoins Saylor bought. Or am I misi...

Re: Bitcoin on the rise
Looks like BTC is in a downward trend. If it dips a lot lower I may consider allocating 2-3% of my net worth to it as a hedge in case the BTC maximalists end up being right over the long term. Trying to time btc is extremely hard. If you want to get in I would suggest DCA spread over a year or more...

Re: Expensive dinners and drinks with friends
1. If they're really friends who are worth spending money on you rather spend on something else, then they're also friends who won't mind if you suggest a home cooked dinner next time or a cheaper restaurant. Or an occasional "no thanks, maybe next time". 2. If they're not just say no. 3. ...

Re: Garden Log
Congrats to all of you with your lovely gardens. I see that many of you grow your own vegetables. How do you store them? I'm asking because in the future I would like to grow vegetables myself but our house doesn't have a cellar. I'm not sure if it's feasable to build a garden cellar. I should check...

Re: Looking for a good mix.
Fair question :D. The value of the land is actually irrelevant. I got this land, owned by family, to build a house on. I cannot sell this land or do anything else with it. This piece of land is in a very good location, a location where I would really like to live and in a region where housing is ver...

Looking for a good mix.
Hey there, MegaRigger from Belgium here. My situation: 30 years old, married, two kids (1 and 3). I'm currently having a house built on a piece of land I got from my parents. We will pay 50k ourselves (we already have this in the bank) and borrow 250k. Since the land's worth is about 250k as well we...

Re: Looking for the catch from Europe
Hey FrugalPatat, fellow Belgian here. An import aspect for indexinvesting for Belgians is that there is no tax on capital gains but only on dividends. So if you invest in indextrackers always invest in the ones that automatically re-invest the dividends. This makes it very interesting from a fiscal ...

Re: News - Online vs paper
I think this list makes a lot of sense. What about just buying the weekend edition? Usually a big part of the noise has already been filtered out and there's more space for in depth interviews and op-eds. For a daily update I believe a well curated twitter list can do the job. About your last point...

Re: Moving Away From Indexing
This then makes those companies bigger relative to other companies in the index (the value of the float of the company increases). When new money goes into the index again, they become even bigger. This is an exponential effect on the biggest companies. We're talking amazon, apple, and google, here...
