Possibly because it's been covered on the forum...I highly recommend reading through cimorene12's journal from a couple years back if you haven't yet.

Re: Usefulness of Strategy Consultancy models
Great thread. I worked as a management consultant for the first 6 years of my career. Not an MBB firm, although we competed successfully against them in a number of places. We owned a niche part of a niche business and executed on it very well. (Which, incidentally is a textbook strategic approach.)...

Re: Reading Recommendations
Relevant books from my reading list as I've grappled with psychological issues / unhappiness / whatever since 2012, with some sort of descriptor from my reading journal (some are more helpful than others), presented in the order in which I read them. Quite a list! Thank you so much. Enjoy these par...

Re: Suomalaisen Päiväkirja
I've continued my reading into meditation, having recently slogged through a dense book on the intersection of psychology and meditation. I may post some of my reading notes here some day, but I don't have the energy to try to condense my 6 (!) single-spaced pages of reading notes into something co...

Re: Will a Robot Take Your Job?
Re: the white collar / blue collar dichotomy, isn't it plausible that white collar jobs be just as affected? Maybe in a way they are more vulnerable because you don't even need a robot to replace you, just a good enough computer program. The computing resources needed to run these programs are cheap...

Re: Nonconformity is the highest evolutionary attainment of social animals
I remember hearing a discussion about this someplace, but damned if I can remember where. Hell, it might've been on this board... The upshot was that the species will produce some number of iconoclasts/misfits. And that these members of the culture take risks and deviate from the behaviors of the no...

@OP: You're in FL? Done the keys? Get a kayak and paddle around, the whole state has tons of water trails (maybe some pictures here https://www.floridarambler.com/florida-camping/kayak-trail-fisheating-creek-florida/ are inspiring?). Everglades are gorgeous. Learn to sail? Take a small craft from Ke...

+1 on Finite and Infinite Games. Really unique book. It might actually be enough of a mindshift to solve this problem.

Re: DIY software development and/or electronics?
I recently hacked up a web app(*) to help myself find people to follow on Twitter. Basically you input two twitter users that you like, and I show you the friends they have in common so you can see if there are others you'd like to add. This isn't novel or difficult, but it's implemented in a way th...

Re: Which Nassim Nicholas Taleb Book Do I Read First?
I have read most of them. There are common threads and interesting connections throughout them all but I can't think of any single book that summarizes all the ideas. I would pick whichever one seems the most interesting. They all took me longer to read than I thought they would - good ideas, discur...

Re: Hacking Professional Experience
I have been pondering this exact thing for a while. My current role is managerial and I have no technical training except self study, but I'm slightly obsessed with machine learning. We have some PhD data scientists in our department and I would much rather be doing their work. But I'm paid to manag...

Re: Scale
Reminds me of this book I had checked out of the library a couple of months ago (sadly it came due before I could get more than a chapter or two in, but would be a good read for someone who found the OP interesting). What I remember learning from it is that the self-similar nature of natural and hum...

So I was buried in work all week and am surprised to see this thread still on the 'active topics' page. Thanks everyone for the love. Honestly, I don't know how some of the power-posters here do it- such a large amount of well-formulated prose on a variety of topics! I definitely can't keep up. I do...

Re: Barbell Investments and Other Ways to Reallocate Cash
There's something called the volatility skew ...And I've already learned a new vocab word. Thanks! Reading up on it. Regarding tail risk, I guess what I'm trying to say is that I feel like it's starting to get elevated, and so I'm looking for a way to position myself such that I'm able to benefit f...

I have been inspired slash maybe a bit shamed into posting here. I have been reading the blog/forum since (oh jeez) 2009. Basically after graduating from college it took less than a month before I came home and asked google how to retire as early as humanly possible. Since then, I've made a lot of p...

Barbell Investments and Other Ways to Reallocate Cash
[Hello! First post. I will introduce myself shortly on the introductions sub-forum (edit: here ). This is an investing question, but I usually find investing boring overall and generally neglect it. So if it's too noob, please say so and I will remove it.] My current asset allocation contains a lar...
