Re: Is 4% dead?

Funny, nowadays I don't feel like I'm really living unless I'm spending the night in a tent or in my car.

Re: What’s the magic number needed?

The establishment Left doesn't even tolerate Bernie Sanders, much less AOC. Her place is to keep the Right pissed off and the neon-hair types along for the ride as useful idiots.

One of the Unabomber's critiques of modern society is that there are three kinds of problems
I feel like the Unabomber is not the guy we should be looking to regarding identifying societal problems and executing solutions thereto.

Re: Choosing between job options

I quit my last job with about that much net worth, like within a couple percent, but in 2010 dollars and stock market valuation. Part of my analysis at the time of quitting was that we were mostly clear of the 2008 crash and recession, the worst of it at least, so I was implicitly betting on a favor...

Re: Quickest Way to Apply for a Job

They usually have to pay to post something on a job site. So if they're actually looking to hire and not screw around, probably that.

That said, consider what job-searching advice from someone whose handle is "unemployable" is actually worth.

Re: Transfer from Betterment to Vanguard

Transfers are best initiated from the receiving end. A competent receiver will be able to handle everything including making the arrangements with the sender. The obvious reason for this is they're trying to add a customer. The outgoing custodian otoh would be biased towards making the process hard...

Re: Why-vector reasons for living - Having, doing, being, seeing

Sounds like a web of goals. You have to climb Everest to see from the top of it and experience the moment of being there, don't you? And you have to have assets or a network (sponsors) to get to base camp and gear up. Substitute "goal I think is important to achieve" with "Everest&quo...

Re: working two jobs

For taxes, I got $66k take home at current $85k salary, $150k takehome with two jobs. So what am I missing? Is it calculated differently if it's two jobs paying rather than 1? I assumed it was just total taxable income. If you're single you're right around the level where most of the phaseouts kick...

Re: Will Gas Stations Exist In 15 Years?

The chart says "plug-in", which could mean it includes plug-in hybrids, which are still ICE cars. In fact these numbers DO include hybrids. https://insideevs.com/news/517969/norway-plugin-car-sales-june2021/ 2021 figures for Norway through June have pure electrics at 57.3% market share an...

Re: Emergence of the Literature of Climate Change

"What are you going to tell the kids when they ask you why you let it happen?" "Well the most effective alternative was for you never to have been born. Is that what you prefer?" We've had post-apocalyptic movies for decades btw, many of which allude to climate change/resource d...

Re: Has COVID caused "ERE" to go mainstream?

The marketplace should do that all by itself. Some people will see $100k goes further in a lot of pretty nice places to live than it does in New York and start effectively bidding say $90k for the same job as long as they get to live in those pretty nice places. And you don't need everyone to do thi...

Re: New Orleans, Gulf Coast or Southeastern United States

For those of you who live around there -- and I live on the Gulf Coast half the year -- the hurricane has potential ER implications. If you live in the declared disaster area you can take out up to $100k from an IRA without the 10% penalty and spread the tax bite over three years. This is something ...

Re: Any math teachers here?

In the US, private school. Pay is worse but the students are more motivated because the parents want to see results from the checks they're writing. Level of motivation generally correlates positively with parental wealth -- the richer kids are trying to get into Ivies. Often you don't need grad sch...

Re: Early Retirement and "Retirement" Accounts

You didn't address what I wrote. I've researched 72t's pretty thoroughly. My point was that I don't see why you'd need your custodian's permission to make a 72t or any other withdrawal. Screw that; it's your money. Just take the withdrawals and deal with the taxes yourself, it's not the custodian's ...

Re: What do you do for furniture?

I've seen "FREE!" signs on couches outside in the densest neighborhoods in Chicago, as well as in my mom's über-suburban HOA conformist hell, so doubt it's an "in my neighborhood" thing. The value of used furniture is effectively the cost to remove it. This includes having the ri...

Re: Early Retirement and "Retirement" Accounts

There are way to withdraw early without penalty, but can be quite complex and many large brokerages don't support these plans (last time I checked my largest IRA custodian did not support 72t due to the complexities/risks of the plans). I don't understand this. You should be able to tell your custo...

Re: Housing Costs & 3-D Printed Houses

If I had to put money on cost-reduction innovation in the built environment, it’d actually be pre-fab. Don’t think “mobile home”, think “how they make cars” - in the controlled environment of a factory, where they can apply a century’s worth of automation and process engineering to the production o...

Re: Housing Costs & 3-D Printed Houses

Axel hits most of the major points. One issue is that homeowners function as America's largest special-interest group (about two-thirds of all households). Once they get their house they become gatekeepers and resist any action that may lower the price of it, which on some level includes new constru...

Re: Has COVID caused "ERE" to go mainstream?

The "essential workers" were basically people whose work product was non-optional in 21st-century society but which couldn't be automated or done remotely, no? Like you can't stock shelves over Zoom or hire a toilet-fixing robot.
