Re: Hello from Canada

Bienvenue !

If you are in or close to Montreal, there are a few ERE punks in that area for possible meetups.

Re: Good morning from Montreal !

Yes I have a car, it is a car centric place where I live. The city is quite spread out, the transit system is O.K. but could be improved (we finally got Sunday service last year ). Housing is very expensive. Although, it helps that we have a wide range of housing types. From a dowtown condo to a cab...

Re: Good morning from Montreal !

Bienvenue ! I grew up on the Montreal south shore and have been living in the Yukon Territory for the last 16 years. Montreal is in deed a great place for ERE people. Cheaper housing, food, metro/bike/walk living. Would you consider not working at all, leaving the Telus job behind and do other thing...

Re: Montreal Meetup - September 15

I am not planning a trip to la belle province this summer but very happy to see interest in a meetup in Montreal. I had great meetups with other forumites in the past and would encourage anyone to give it a try. Heck, we are going at the ERE Fest in September. Well done mleroux79 ! We had a meetup i...

Re: Are you an "adult"?

@ themodernchap This sounds like a very painful experience you had to go through. Your mother asked when she would have to identify your younger brother, she knew it had to be done. In retrospect, do you think your mom could have done it instead of you ? I understand you wanted to protect her. Then,...

Re: Bicycle trip in the canadian prairies summer 2022

Sure ! So I started the trip on the transcanadian highway a bit outside Medecine Hat and finished in Regina 3 weeks later. I had to fly the bike with me from the Yukon to B.C. and then I was lucky to have my BF drive me to Medecine Hat from B.C. with the bike in the car. Otherwise, starting (and fly...

Re: Housing surprises and making better decisions

I can't recall if this was mentioned or not but you may want to check the zoning of adjacent properties in addition to your own. Is there any secondary usage that would allow someone to have a B&B next door ? Or is the single dwelling land parcel across from you is in fact zoned multifamily ? A ...

Re: Bicycle trip in the canadian prairies summer 2022

I kept it pretty cellphone free. Did not book anything in advance. Since this was late August and September, campgrounds were empty. Many ( most ) were self-registrating, cash only. Never had an issue to get a spot. I slept one night in a ghost town on the deck of an abandoned house. And one of the ...

Re: Bicycle trip in the canadian prairies summer 2022

A bit late for news about this.... I did this trip last September, 3 weeks. Biking on (paved) rural roads in Southwest Saskatchewan. What a great trip. Lots of wildlife, very cheap campgrounds, sunny and hot. The grasslands were well worth it for my northern eyes. Next bicycle trip : Utah in Septemb...

Summer meetup Nelson, B.C. area ( Canada )

I am leaving the frozen north for southern B.C. this summer.
Any interest for a meetup around Nelson B.C. sometime in July or August ?
Lurkers welcomed.

Re: @theanimal (or others), best way to roadtrip/see Alaska & Western Canada?

I live in the Yukon. As mentionned in other replies, this is a lot to pack in a short trip. Many major roads in the Yukon are gravel roads or partially paved, same thing in Alaska. It might take longer than planned to make distances. Road washout, forest fire jumping the highway, early snowfall, thi...

Re: US Apartment sizes are shrinking

A few years back, I got a job to design a large house addition to an already big enough house for a couple and their toddler. They were not wealthy, counting on a bank loan to finance the addition. They were already in debt to their ears to pay the mortgage. When I got there and heard them explainin...

Re: Dumpster Diving

@Loutfard Good question. I am assuming that one could collect a bunch of aluminium bike frames and find a recycler close to home to buy them. Where I live (remote town in Northern Canada), any sort of metal objects (except some appliances) brought to the dump are stored together until the pile is hi...

Re: Dumpster Diving

Interesting ! Glad to know you can make money out of your free bike parts. It pays to live in a place with a large enough customer base for this kind of exchange. I don't need bike parts, but it reminds me how the dump here is full of bikes, many still with accessories on them ; bottle holder, rear ...

Re: Dumpster Diving

I haven't DD at all last winter for all kind of reasons. My BF and I went last night. First time ever for him, he was quite curious and excited to try this. We came back home with fruits, mostly citrus fruits : oranges, grapefruits but also a couple peaches and one pear. I will make marmalade later ...

Re: ERE Fest 2023: Ft Dirtbag

Ah ! very interesting. We have been talking about doing a bicycle touring trip in Utah in September 2023 my BF and I. What an unique chance to combine the ERE Fest with our plans. We looked at a map last night, looks like we could drive from Canada to Ft Dirtbag and then drive across Nevada and plan...

Re: Montreal Meetup - September 15

Yes, the south shore sounds good. I am in Chateauguay.
Any place in mind ? I don't now the good places anymore.
Maybe a walk somewhere in the afternoon ?
