Ouch, 7WB5, didn't think you'd be reading about Catherine the Great while lying in a hospital bed. Wishing you a speedy recovery!

Re: [ERE Skill Share] Bread Baking
We did make a starter yesterday. This morning, it showed some subtle bubbles - proof of life! :) Question: what is the meaningful practical difference between hard wheat and soft wheat? My choice of flour is between American hard wheat with molted barley added or fancy Italian 100% soft wheat. I mad...

@jacob: My friend and neighbor is using one of those. It is consistent with what you see on Purple Air in our neighborhood.

Re: How do you all like that campfire smell in CA/OR?
Don't like the campfire smell at all! My eyes and throat are itchy. My extroverted 15-year-old daughter is going crazy - she can not meet with friends inside because of COVID and can not meet outside because of the horrible air quality... quite a quandary... Everybody is constantly looking at...

Re: Fascinating Book on Daily Life in Post-Collapse Russia
@Zach: Thank you for the recommendation. I ordered the book out of nostalgia. I left Russia in July of 1990. The situation that you described was already in place. I remember coming to our neighborhood store and seeing only 2 items available - small packages of loose green tea and canned seaweed. Th...

Re: Please help me to choose a bike
Guys, it's been almost 2 years. I've been successful by the standards I've stated in the beginning - I can now ride a bike casually without fear of falling, have found a few trails where I am biking regularly, and enjoy this hobby a lot. I am very happy now that I have this skill. I find riding a bi...

Re: Share your recipes
Hi to ERE cooks,
I, quite by accident, came into possession of lupini beans. Internet recipes vary widely on the topic of soaking - anywhere between 2-3 days and 2-3 weeks. The recipes are few, mainly salads. If anyone had any personal experience with them I would appreciate the advice.

Re: COVID-19
I am under the shelter-in-place order in the San Francisco Bay Area. I am actually going to work every day as I am a healthcare worker. The atmosphere is of complete fear. The pulmonologist in the YouTube video below offers an alternative perspective. It resonates with me. It used to be that 50% of ...

Re: Call Out to HSP INFJs: what makes you feel content/useful?
Do NOT get married to this straitjacket of yours - INFJ. Read The Complete Enneagram 27 Paths to Greater Self-Knowledge by Beatrice Chesnut - great, GREAT book about how we are saddled in childhood with a certain personality and how the arc of life is to lose it, to become an oak tree from an acorn.

Re: Personal care assistant?
CNA/PCA - you'll be changing adult diapers and lifting obese people, A LOT. There is no way up without additional education. Kitchen job is easier. You can become a kitchen supervisor, which is more money + easier.

Re: Spraying ectasy and LSD in war zones
Hm... not sure about the war zones, but observing the renewed interest throughout the society in LSD, psilocybin, and other psychedelics. There is a new, very interesting book on the subject by Michael Pollan (of "eat real food" fame). It's called How to Change Your Mind. Just finished it ...

Becoming Poor in Italy
It's an interesting perspective, a first-hand account of a generational decline and lifestyle change. Definitely not just Italy - same in the US for many people.

Re: What Do You Eat for Weight Loss?
@horsewoman: Yes, the simple answer is "Yes". But how do you do that? The link that I've mentioned provides excellent practical guidelines on the topic of " HOW to eat less", which includes many rules of thumb to make it easy. He says, for example, that it is impossible to overea...

Re: What Do You Eat for Weight Loss?
Looks like the majority on this forum is trending toward keto and low carbs. Hm... Up until very recently, it hasn't been my problem. At 5'3" I've lived my life with the needle glued to 115 lbs on a scale. Not anymore... It's 122.8 as of this morning. I've been kind of paying attention to it as...
