Re: Zero Wasters?

@Jin+Guice: I got interested in the subject for a while - ended up driving around a lot in the search of bulk foods in fancy stores that would weigh your glass jars separately, avoiding stores that have pre-packed foods, etc. IOW, wasting gasoline and money instead of plastic - not practical; does n...

Re: How Will My Fascination with ERE Affect My Marriage?

It's the one paragraph version of War&Peace(?) Ha-ha, feel flattered. I'd say more like Anna Karenina than War and Peace. Now, that I think about it, the husband of Anna Karenina is often mentioned as a textbook example of ISTJ - something he shares with DH. I can totally relate to her temptations ...

Re: 7Wannabe5-Take 5

Interesting! What kind of jobs do you have in mind? You can find a property at $57.600. If you want 1/4 occupancy you also need to find 3 more people, so as far as being entertaining, no escape for you! Not that you need one... :)

Re: Warning: WH seeks to limit/deport immigrants using ACA and other gov. services

After I received my LPR, I opened an IRA and 401k figuring that I could permanently trust/commit to the US retirement system. In retrospect, I would have opened Roth versions instead. This would make it easier to pull money out. Would you please elaborate on that? "Roth... would make it easier to p...

Ouch!!! So sorry to hear that... Best of luck. Stoicism is the most useful part of ERE for you now. Marcus Aurelius for suffering though it with dignity?

Re: 7Wannabe5-Take 5

$300/month seems tough. You have to be VERY entertaining to other people to pull this off. $35/hr? Tutoring? You have to have either your own place or transportation... "lucky and clever" always helps. :D Full-time job? Won't you feel like a gravestone is closing on you?

@arcyallen:
Thank you! I am somewhat detached from my money and don't have a shadow of a doubt in my ability to tolerate a loss. Now, it's a matter of organizing my tiny, but growing stash of earned money. :D

Re: Asset Allocation in 401K

OK, so let's see if I've got it straight. Here is my baby-portfolio... On a bed of cash  (emergency stash on my checking account and a potential CD account) lies Bob  made entirely out of bonds. I didn't get to choose Bob. Bob was arranged by my 401K (Wells Fargo Core Bond CIT N...

Re: Asset Allocation in 401K

@slowtraveler: Thank you! That was my inclination too - go with the best reputation regardless of the asset class. This, apparently, contradicts Jacob's wisdom if I got it correctly. @jacob: Thank you! My best option for now is to trust your advice. The info and noise derived from various bo...

Asset Allocation in 401K

Signed up for 401K (better late than never). Some superficial research lead me to the idea of 50-50 split between bonds and stocks. I want to keep it simple and don't know any better. My 401K is run by Wells Fargo. Stock funds seem to have reputable options - Dodge & Cox Stock and American Funds Eur...

Re: How Will My Fascination with ERE Affect My Marriage?

August 2018 MARRIAGE Not easy. We've always gone though periods of extreme alienation, leading parallel lives. We slip there because of this disagreement or that, and then it's weeks or months. Cold. Ice cold. I am always the one who has to make the peace. DH is not a peacemaker. He is not a maker i...

Re: Squeezed?

Since we are talking about middle class and its difficulties I'd like to develop this topic further and include other classes. Questions: 1. What are the things that in your mind are associated with low class? 2. What are the things that in your mind are associated with high class? I'll go first: 1....

Re: Quiz: Do you live in a bubble (elitist)

I think both of these questionnaires - @OP's and @jacob's are meant for entertainment and are excellent at that. They do not capture the width of human experiences. For example, when I arrived in the US 22 years ago I stepped into a bubble and never left (except for knowing a few Russians with DUIs ...

Have you lived for more than 15 years in the state you're currently living in? Yes Do you still live less than 300 miles from where you spent the majority of your childhood? No As an adult have you ever visited another country? (Not counting Mexico or Canada) Yes Do you speak another language not co...

Re: Quiz: Do you live in a bubble (elitist)

I scored 0. I don't think it has serious class implications for me because I was born and raised in Russia and some of the aspects of American culture are still foreign to me. I used to watch Matlock, Friends, and Seinfeld when I was learning English. By 2009 I had to cut off TV for the benefit of DD.
