independent means allow for independent thought. Some random thoughts on the correlation between independent means and independent thoughts... Being free to practice independent thought and free speech is one of the more noble motives to reach independent means. However, the fact that you are allow...

Ladies and Gentlemen, You didn't have to wait too long. Currently (and very unfortunately), in this country you can not be anti-war without being smeared as Putin puppet: https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2020-election/russia-s-propaganda-machine-discovers-2020-democratic-candidate-tulsi-gabbard-n964...

@brookline:
I wish I was there with you - that's one of a few areas of my expertise. :lol: I shake my head "No", smile politely, and keep on walking. I am also aware that my body becomes a tad stiff at these moments conveying an absolute lack of a possibility.

Re: The Art of Not Being Governed

@7Wannabe5: You got "clueless and passive" right. It took me a long time to understand that. You also got my part correctly - "angry" when the appropriate reaction was sadness and disappointment. I suspected DH's malicious intent, but it was cluelessness. Now the usual sequence i...

If you are interested in controlling your anger listen to this bit from 0:47 to 2:30. Personally, I've found this train of thought very helpful in general and in dealing with anger induced by my family in particular:

Huh! I am not arguing with your real life experience, but according to analytical psychology, ENTJ's vice is avarice, not anger. It is consistent with my personal experience with ENTJs, though I've dealt with women only, never with men. :geek: :geek: :geek:

Re: The Art of Not Being Governed

Makes me wonder whether SIL doesn't view your husband as being more like the Junior Man of the Family, as opposed to obedient child? What do you mean? I don't get this one. Which family are you talking about? DH's original? Or DH's own, with me? You say that you get this behavior from your sisters....

@7Wannabe5: What does grown man behaving like obedient 5 year old look like? Did he run to get a paper towel after he spilled drink twice? I wish... :lol: DH never spills any drinks. He is super-neat and really well coordinated. When I spill a drink (a frequent occurrence) he is bothered by this beh...

@jacob:

This claim is consistent with the article I've once read claiming that IQ of US presidents has been consistently in 110-115 range. Makes sense - above the mean, but no more than one standard deviation above the mean.

Re: The Art of Not Being Governed

@Mister Imperceptible: Thank you. This is the title of one of my favorite books by James C. Scott. It is an ambition of mine, not a reality as of today - not being governed. IRL I feel social anxiety, use clothes as body armor and have advanced toward FI way slower than I've hoped. As of lately, the...

Re: The Art of Not Being Governed

It's been a while... I've got swept by holiday machinations, motherly duties, and overall busyness. I am still doing accounting in a red notebook, but not transferring my numbers here. I was doing fine in November and December, but then, when the holidays were almost over, on January 5th, I had a ma...

I think it might be a good plan to just choose to abstain from all medical care/treatment past a certain age and make do with a stash of morphine. Instead of one of those terrible Life Alert bands,

Re: Does one owe it to their parents to take care of them in old age?

Not to be morbid, but can you expand on what you mean by dying from a respiratory infection in a group care facility possibly being better than dying at home? @Augustus: This is not morbid. This is a reasonable question to ask. When you are at a nursing home you have a higher chance of getting pneu...

Re: Thoughts on the new Gillette Ad

I am sitting at the very boring meeting at work surrounded by, among others, 6 young men. 5 of them have beards. Poor marketing guys at Gillette are desperate. As all of us under condition of desperation, they are attempting risky things. Will they be successful? Will these guys sitting with me at t...

Why are you, guys, assuming that Jeff's Bezos' wife is leaving him, and not the other way around? There was nothing in their statement to indicate that.
