Re: How do I stop wasting money on books

I resemble this thread! Since I have been making a dedicated effort to reduce my spending, my Amazon habit has really taken a hit. I found that I was purchasing a lot of fiction (albeit, used), that I ended up finding disappointing. I hate spending money on disappointing things. Now, I only bu...

It is limited and out of date for the online world. What many forget is that the real world is important and is more important than the online world.
Yup, for the digital world, I would recommend this one:

Re: Privacy and Security on the Web and IRL?

I have two email accounts, one is pretty secure (riseup.net) and the other is more so (protonmail.com). I have no social media accounts; not interested in being data-mined for advertising purposes. I use the SeaMonkey browser with HTTPS Everywhere and uBlock Origin plug-ins, and also the Epic browse...

Re: Extremely Slow Travel

This is exactly my kind of travel. When I hear people talk about how they want to go see this-or-that faraway place, my usual response is that I haven't even seen as much of Oregon as I'd like to see. We have it all here: temperate rainforests, the coast, mountains, deserts. I'm reminded of the book...

Re: Toilet paper and safety razors

lol for Jeffrey Tucker reference :) brute has experienced that commercial bar soap is terrible for shaving. he uses one that came in a tub with a brush. that definitely works better, but the most important factor seems to be getting the skin really wet with really hot water. I tried years ago to us...

Re: Stuff --- A cluttered life

Western minimalism is a response to Western consumerism which implies the usual Western hypocrisy: you have to have had a lot of unnecessary shit in the first place which means you have a job, a home, etc. Our concept of minimalism is insulting and condescending to anyone living in a less prosperou...

Re: Toilet paper and safety razors

could JWJones elaborate on how shaving soap is different from regular soap? this has always interested brute. Most name-brand, commercially available bar soap is what could be called "detergent soap," as they tend to contain a lot of crap that creates a harsh, drying soap. The basic ingredients of ...

Re: Toilet paper and safety razors

We get our TP from Costco, their house brand (Kirkland) 30 rolls for $19 (.63¢ per roll). I've been using a safety razor for a couple of years now, having replaced disposables. I use Shark blades (100 count from Amazon for $8.59). We make our own bar soap (because we sell it) so we haven't purchased...

Re: Something From Nothing Log

While out hiking a couple of weekends ago, I found a brand-new looking Nikon Aculon rangefinder. After some research on prices for a new one, I stuck it on ebay at a starting bid of $50. It ended up selling for $115! :D

@ Jason - Thanks! I don't know what your personal circumstances are, but what would prevent you from scaling down to only one car? @ ghjess - You know, Oregon used to be a relatively inexpensive place to live (my first studio apartment in 1987 cost me $150/month), but nowadays prices seem to be thro...

Re: *Pokes Vegan / Vegetarian / WFPB-Diet Bear* Interested to see current opinions on this topic

I'm probably in the minority here, as I follow a paleo diet. Having said that, I have also followed vegetarian, macrobiotic, and vegan diets in the past. For a little background, I also spent 12 years working in the natural foods retail industry. My reasons for following a paleo diet are entirely he...

Re: Significant others: Having the talk ...

Thanks for the sane advise, @Sclass and @sl-owl-orris. After I came home from work, we talked about it more. I tend to be pretty hardcore when it comes to this sort of thing, and I jump right in head-first and start making things happen quickly. She changes slowly, but definitely sees the wisdom and...

Re: Significant others: Having the talk ...

Well, I'm having a hard time with this one. I had "the talk" with my wife about a week ago, stating what my plans/goals were in terms of finances, ERE, and changes that need to be made if we actually want to realize some goals. "Okay," she said, "do whatever you need to do, I'm on board." A couple o...

Re: Hello from Cascadia

What do you want achieve within in the next years? And how do you think ERE can help you with that? Do you have certain topics on your mind? BTW: I do follow Dr. Greger's Daily Dozen's diet (maybe you heard of it) and commute also by bike to work. :-) Within the next 5 years I would like to have pa...

Doesn't look like you ever received an answer! I'm assuming here that you're talking about the Adobe Creative Suite: InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator. If so, there's Scribus (like InDesign), GIMP (like Photoshop), and Inkscape (like Illustrator).

Re: Hello from Cascadia

Welcome JWJones to the ERE-Forum! There is a saying I once heard or was it a quote: People overestimate what they are able to achieve in one year and underestimate what is possible within ten years! So...don't despair! Much is possible till you retire. Thanks, MDFIRE. What you say is definitely tru...
