Re: Seamus's Journal
In my life, I have had 2 non-office unskilled labor jobs, and 4 office jobs (to be fair, all but one of them were short term/part time/internships, so I didn't really get the full experience), and at none of them did I think, "What sucks about working here is the office politics, and having to ...

Re: Seamus's Journal
Thank you rube. 2021 feels like a good year for me to make a change. It now takes so long to save up enough to increase my investment income by, say, 10%, that trading off time from what is left of my youth to do so is beginning to feel like it isn't worth it. I think I will wait at least until I ca...

Seamus's Journal
Brief autobiography: I graduated university in 2013 at age 22 with an engineering degree. At that time I had ~$0 net worth. I immediately started a job as an engineer and have worked the same job for the last 7.5 years. I have never enjoyed the job (or any of the jobs I'd had prior to graduating) an...

Re: Cooking beans
I don't have a pressure cooker. I soak them once for about 9 hours, usually during my work day on Mondays. When I get home from work I drain the water, add more, and start it boiling, then simmer for an hour and they're done. I guess you could argue that I have to be around the house for an hour whi...

Re: Cooking beans
@Bankai I agree it's important to avoid frugality fallacy, but I don't necessarily think this is an example of that. In particular I would say the extra time to cook beans is closer to 3 minutes than 30, as long as one doesn't get mesmerized by simmering water :) I agree with Jean as well, I might b...

Re: Pet Ownership
Curious where you saw that 9% figure. This suggests that pet ownership was 56% in 1988, which is more in line with what I would expect. I agree that cost disease at least partially explains the increased spending.

Re: Thoughts about respectability
I would say the company I work for is unusually conservative, but I still think that I gain respect overall for riding an old bike to work, keeping a canister of oatmeal at my desk, etc. On average I think my coworkers would say I'm weird, but in a cool/interesting way rather than a contemptible one...

I live in Michigan, but I've been meaning to take a trip to Chicago and I'm free that weekend. I can try to coordinate rides so I can be there.

Re: It is worth commuting further for cheaper rent?
I think I prefer a 20-30 minute ride to work over a 5-10 minute ride. I'm less irritable/sleepy by the time I get there, and it feels like I got some real exercise.
For what it's worth I live in Michigan and my mountain bike can handle all but the worst blizzards we get here.

My Mon-Fri routine: 6-10 miles total on my bike (commute + errands). 45 minutes of either ultimate frisbee or pushups, pullups & sprints (currently I get in 100 of each + 4x400m). Either a kettlebell workout (farmer carry, snatches, goblet squats, swings, farmer carry back) or I go to the climbi...

Re: What metrics do you keep on yourself, or your daily practices?
Daily: Number of alcoholic drinks I had. This was the first thing I started keeping track of, back in 2012. I drank too much back then and keeping track helped keep it under control. I'd give myself a weekly limit which usually meant I wouldn't drink so much during the week because I wanted to get d...

Re: Numbness to Numbers
I think I remember Jacob writing that paying $0.25 too much for an item at the grocery store had more of an emotional impact than a single day four-digit drop in portfolio value. I'm sure a lot of us feel this way to some extent.

Re: The very same software - tools development and ERE
"...just about any industry." What about software for designing physical products, especially complex ones (cars/airplanes/bridges etc)? Even in the 21st century, I'd still say designing/manufacturing goods is a pretty huge chunk of "industry." Licenses for professional grade CAD...

I'm a swimmer too. I managed to be mediocre in high school, which is more than I can say for track! I'm still decent, I can swim 10km in under 3 hours. If I had a nickel for every cereal/body shot comment I've ever received, I'd be FI by now :). The latter did come in handy pretty often in college. ...

Re: Pectus Excavatum
Good to hear that worked for your son, makes me wish I had considered it more strongly earlier. I'm 26 years old and for a number of reasons I'm not really considering surgery at this point, unless there were a pressing health concern. Around age 13 I had a few tests done (I remember jogging up a tr...

Pectus Excavatum
AKA sunken chest, funnel chest, etc. I have a fairly severe case. I don't remember my Haller index, but by inspection it's as bad as the guy in the picture on wikipedia (I'm a little bit more muscular). I'm terrible at cardio and have long wondered how much of this is due to pectus. I ran track in h...

Re: Novice trying to build a freestanding climbing wall
Two of my friends have done this, one in the garage and one in the basement (they do both own their homes). One created molds and cast his own holds from epoxy, which turned out alright but not as good as professionally manufactured ones. I believe the T-nuts were the most expensive part of the build.

Re: Mortgage notes?
Interesting. So say you're renting month to month and buy one of these notes nearby. You either collect, or foreclose and move in while you bring it up to code. Win-win as long as long as you had a realistic idea of how costly the renovation would be from the start?
