Re: TOSlink optical cable problem

Audiophiles would say there's a qualitative difference in the optical quality. Personally, I can't see that that's the case as the bitrate rate is low, as is a CD/BluRay ultimately (vs a 10Gbit fibre, for example). That plus the error correction led me to conclude that a cheap fibre is good enough. ...

Re: Fingeek's Journal

Thank you! I'm slowly collecting some notes in that area, and I will add to a journal entry when it's more well formed (and more fully discovered!) It feels like I'm on the outgoing end of "One More Year" syndrome, and I think my test retirement year really helped me realise that I needed ...

Re: What do you do for work?

I guess it depends on what are they really asking / why they are asking it. And of course, what is your intent with reply. For me, I realise that I don't know why they're really asking - Is it an opener? To categorise me into a box? Status comparison? Genuinely interested in people? And because I do...

Re: What do you do for work?

Thanks for the answers all! I agree that "I don't work" and "I'm retired" do not fit with most people's map of the world. I think I'm arriving on "I work for myself", with an optional "my current focus is...". It's easy to remember as a default, and diffuses n...

What do you do for work?

"Hey fingeek, nice to meet you... Where do you work?" Increasingly, I'm seeing myself in a position where people ask Where do you work? What do you do? How is work? And as I extract myself from the salaryman person into a passive investment-heavy web of goals person, I'm starting to strugg...

Re: A chat with gpt2-chatbot

I still found knowing about the website itself useful. I didn;t know it existed and it's been useful over the past couple of days. I happen to be on a different wavelength right now so I used it to learn about other topics, but it still helped synthesize the material where i found original texts to...

Re: A chat with gpt2-chatbot

I expect the issue here is that there doesn't seem like an overall purpose for this thread, or at least it wasn't clear. It feels more like "Hey, look at this Google search copypasta" rather than "This is a cool new tool that appears to have stealth launched, and on first glance seems...

I don't think a particular AI output is interesting. Discussion about prompt crafting is interesting/useful. This stealth gpt2-chatbot note is very interesting - thanks for sharing!

Re: Cooking with pressure cookers - Expanded beyond beans

Can vouch for an instant pot. It cooks cheaper cuts of meat very well - and with the extra rendered down fat - tends to taste better than leaner cuts! Great for roasted meat on its own, and liquid type thinks like curry etc.
