how and when we out of this lock-down situation

This whipsaw market has been a very interesting ride. One of my greatest weakness in the markets has been to get in too early on the way down, and then out too early on the way back up. So the current market movements really makes for a great study, and practice. Rather than waiting an entire year f...

Re: Avoiding US stocks to increase expected returns

You also have risks of currency fluctuations. This is one of my long term fears with the US market, $ value devaluation owing to rampant national debt. Owning a home in the US, feels like a potential hedge. Some people might say national debt can go on for ever, but I think that theory will eventua...

Re: Holding Cash Until Coronavirus is Settled

"I spent 3.5% of the cash hoard buying in after the third, regretted it the next day." We are better off training ourselves to NOT think this way. No one is going to pick the bottom, so why beat yourself up for not being able to predict the future. If you're buying at a good price, you got a deal! S...

Jobless claims in the US

In a financial meeting some economic's people pointed out that our new unemployment claims numbers are going to make a huge jump next week. 3/23 - /3/27, maybe it comes out on Thursday. Don't have time to research it now, but it might be this report: https://www.dol.gov/ui/data.pdf Maybe someone els...

Re: Holding Cash Until Coronavirus is Settled

@ertyu, your probably right. Patience is good advice, but it also happens to be one of my greatest weaknesses:) But in either case the stuff I'm buying at current PE ratios feels like a great bargain so there is no fear for long term losses. In the past I've always been too heavily invested to take ...

Re: Holding Cash Until Coronavirus is Settled

I took some gains today on my AAL, and WFC, 15% jump in one day for AAL is crazy. My guess is a choppy market with some good down days ahead... where I will be buying.

Lovin airlines at these prices, unfortunately my 401k does not allow purchases there.

Re: Holding Cash Until Coronavirus is Settled

I started moving out of the market Fall, 2019, and then was completely out Jan. 2020. While I still like some global index funds like EWU, the thought was to only play the dips in the US market given high valuations. While it was mildly difficult to sit out the gains of the last few months, it seeme...

Re: Investments Trade Log

After ignoring the market for for about 3 months I ended up getting back in on 12/24; when the market dives I mostly stop looking. Tripled down on OPI (last 2 days), as I think this one oversold big time. It currently has around * dividend yield. --Edit At the time of this post E-Trade noted an inco...

Re: Gardening - A Lost Art

You might enjoy growing sweet potatoes Lemur. Many people don't realize that you can eat the greens (super healthy) all summer long and then dig up the sweet potatoes in the Fall. You plant them in loose soil. https://www.prevention.com/food-nutrition/healthy-eating/a20444362/sweet-potato-greens/ p....

Gardening - A Lost Art

For anyone thinking of starting a garden, late summer to fall is really the time you want to get started. I’ve heard people say gardening is expensive, but it’s really not. If you are patient and do research it could be done for nothing. The basics, or what you need: 1. Spade shovel, 2. chicken wire...

ROTH - Purchased LX today, earnings expected 8/23. China trade issues, and now the emerging market scare really put a kink in the price. risk vs rewards looks favorable. edit --- I'll like sell all or half of position on or before 8/22 if there is a nice profit. 8/17 was a nice 10% jump in price, it...

Short term - Long term - mixed strategy

Did not work quite so well for FB this last time. It worked great, as I sold prior to earnings. Very often I'll do this when a stock is soaring like FB did prior to earnings. But had I got caught holding onto the stock over earnings, it would simply be a hold and wait. More often it means it's time...

Re: Noob Investor Asks Noob Questions for the 10,000th time

Regarding peer to peer lending suggested by MMM, it’s complete and utter garbage. Thanks for sharing that, that will be a time saver! Y'all are crushing it on the advice and discussion but you're shorting me on the how to. Read "Beating the Street.", by Peter Lynch. It's an older book, but holds up...

Thanks Brute.

I did forget to add auto deductions for 2018 YTD numbers, so $70 more per month parking + donations come out of paycheck.

So estimated expenses of 16.5 K per yr 2018
2.5 K is traveling
2.5 K is home improvements

extra cash seems very practical given the cycle we are in

My take for someone new to investing is to stay in cash (meaning - low, save returns), a safe dividend stock, international, FANG (FB and Google mostly), edit-- someone mentioned pay down mortgage (a good idea). Being diversified outside the US or cash seems very practical given the cycle we are in....

Re: What should I watch out for/how to go about opening investment accounts in the US? [German national/US passport]

I would not consider the US to be the best country for flag-diversification. 2nd that - especially because of timing, where the US is at the end of a long bull market run. Is it the longest bull market in US history, if not it's close? " Still, we've agreed to set up "mini-contracts", basically wri...
