Re: Freedom through Frugality: Sabaka's Journal

So, before I do the standard monthly summary, I want to try and share my own web of goals with you. I am in the process of rereading ERE again and it is the first time I think I have half-understood the web of goals concept. So, here is my own attempt: https://docs.google.com/drawings/d/1PyjOme1vY6w...

Re: Bankai's Journal

Hiya Bankai, Well done on maintaining a good savings rate despite the purchases! Most of those purchases seem to be multi-year items items, so you are well set up for the next few years! :) I am also hoping that the quarantine will help to keep my own expenses down, but the library has also closed a...

Re: Leisure vs. Free Time

@Stahlmann That's a very interesting post, thank you for sharing it. I have found that the maximum period I can actively learn a language a day (the main way I spend my leisure time atm) to be around 4-5 hours a day, which coincides with the results of that study. Beyond that and the brain refuses t...

Re: Freedom through Frugality: Sabaka's Journal

@2birds1stone Hiya! In all honesty, I'm not too sure what has inspired this interest. I don't have any Slavic ancestry as far as I'm aware, and my parents are not professors of Slavic history or anything  . Initially my interest was more in Russia only, and that has been since at least age 14/1...

Re: Freedom through Frugality: Sabaka's Journal

Update time! February 2020 Summary Ledger: Name - Cost (£) Recurring exp - 5.95 Food - 5.3 Misc - 26.99 Languages - 49.14 Charity - 118.69 Total (£) - 206.07 Overall, an okay month. Taking away the charitable contributions, my total expenditure would have been £87.38p, which is a good figure. The ch...

Re: Freedom through Frugality: Sabaka's Journal

January 2020 Summary Ledger: Name - Cost (£) Recurring exp - 5.95 Book - 27.96 Food - 15.37 Misc - 34.11 Clothes - 105 Total (£) - 188.39 A fairly good month, disregarding some one-off costs. The major expense was of course for the "clothes" (in this case a new suit). I absolutely hate buying suits...

Re: Freedom through Frugality: Sabaka's Journal

@Cheepnis Thanks a lot man :) . It helps to read posts like that, assuage the constant doubts I have  @Egg It's the little black dresses that put me off! In all serious, I think that when I reflected on it, I am just not at the level of the Royal Marines or Paras, either in terms of physi...

Re: Freedom through Frugality: Sabaka's Journal

December 2019 update and overview of the entire year. Another year passed! It is quite strange to sometimes look back on my very first posts back in April 2017 and see how things have changed in the nearly three years since then. Back then, I was in the military reserves, working in a warehouse and...

Re: Bankai's Journal

Cool update Bankai Scotland is looking beautiful, lucky to live there! Regarding stoicism, I do not believe it needs to be studied or meditated upon every day in order for it to have a positive impact on your life. Obviously it would be ideal to meditate for 15 minutes every morning, but real life c...

Re: Freedom through Frugality: Sabaka's Journal

@2Birds1Stone Thanks for your comment. I have read the book, and it was quite good. The main takeaways I took from it were to not impose self-limiting beliefs on oneself, such as "You cannot do this because of this obligation or that relationship, etc. I read it a couple of years ago now, so that mi...

Re: Freedom through Frugality: Sabaka's Journal

Decision made I've decided to try and join the Royal Marines. From a pretty young age, I have always been interested in the military. I can remember one time, walking with my dad in the local woods and I was asking him about different things, as he had been in the Reserves (Parachute regiment). And...

Re: Freedom through Frugality: Sabaka's Journal

@wolf I suppose I do use systems in a way, just the ones I use have become so instinctive that I do not recognise when I am using. They are also very simple, as if they were not simple I would have to actively think about them. For me, the big barrier to creating or applying more complex systems (su...

Re: wolf's journal

Full respect for being able to apply these systems to your own life Wolf! Do you find that sometimes the need to apply systems tires you? For me, whenever I begin to think about or apply systems, it just begins to tire me out a little.

Keep on cracking on!!

Re: Freedom through Frugality: Sabaka's Journal

@wolf That's a good point actually. I imagine military life is quite dependent. But it also offers the chance to experience new things, learn new skills, and become a part of something larger than ourselves. Mainly, I want to serve a cause larger than myself, I want to feel as if I am "doing my bit"...

Re: Freedom through Frugality: Sabaka's Journal

Just going to post an update. Don't really feel like doing my usual structure, so this is just going to be a bit of a tangent. Russia is okay. I'm feeling ready to go home. I'm bored of being a tourist, which is essentially what I am here. I need work, and a sense of purpose. Work does not always eq...

Re: Freedom through Frugality: Sabaka's Journal

@fitby41 That will be a long old time in Russia. In all honesty, after only two months here I am already ready to return home. Do you plan to study a degree here? Interesting thoughts, I get where you are coming from. However, By following fire principles, I make sure to budget my dates. If a girl i...

Re: Freedom through Frugality: Sabaka's Journal

I'm going on a bit of a posting role at the moment! I have lots of free time here. And that means lots of time to think. Thinking is generally not good for me. I remember hearing a quote along the lines of "All of men's issues boil down to being in able to sit quietly in a room alone". I think this ...

Re: Freedom through Frugality: Sabaka's Journal

Hiya @fitby41, Cheers for the info. I'll definitely check a few of them out. The language school likes to arrange trips to Peterhof by boat, which is much more expensive, so it's good to know there is a different way of getting there also. Funny you should say about the zoos. I met up with a person ...

Re: Freedom through Frugality: Sabaka's Journal

Not an update, just a post about my first impressions of Russia. I like the value of the pound against the ruble. Obviously, this is only beneficial to me as a foreigner, and not to ordinary Russians. For me however, it is very kind. One Metro journey costs 45r, which is about 50p. In comparison to ...
