@ Noedig: Good Bordeaux is wonderful stuff. But one of those things (like houses...) that I am just a bit too young to have ever purchased in the days before asset inflation really took hold around 2001. I am profoundly grateful when I drink other people's, though! My aim is to retire with all the e...

Re: Kipling's Journal

@2birds1stone - yes indeed, some focus is going to be required but i'm going to give it a go. A weekend of fairly healthy eating and really serious amounts of exercise has me back down to 207 pounds today. I'm now going to go for an exercise session before going to work.

Re: Kipling's Journal

@Alice_AU: the figure is based on the weekly amount that according to my personal tax account (even though you are no longer in the UK, your journal suggests, presumably you can still access yours) I have already accrued (in my case, £129/week). I then assume a 2.5% annual growth in that number betw...

Re: Kipling's Journal

@chenda: I actually went to Chapel Down vineyards in Kent on a team trip this month and we did the full tour and tasting. The tour was enjoyable and included the clearest explanation of Guyot pruning I've had anywhere. But the wine... I know my standards are pretty high but I was surprised by quite ...

Re: Kipling's Journal

@ earlybath: I have been pondering your questions ['At what? In what way?] of June 8th. It is genuinely helpful to have people ask these sorts of questions because it forces one to articulate clearly what one means. I must do better at optimising my spending. Wasted money often occurs when I give in...

Re: Portfolio Charts

@Seppia- the UK bias towards UK listed companies has much more recent historical reasons than that. As so often, lurking in the background there is a tax reason. Remember most peoples' pensions investments were invested though funds until very very recently. Until 1997 UK pension fund vehicles could...

Re: apocalyptic techno-optimism

I am not sure whether it is an artefact of my own ageing that I think it is largely in my adult lifetime that tech has evolved from problem-solving in the sense of 'this tech exists to help [the mass of] people' to problem-solving in the sense of '[the mass of] people are a problem, this tech solves...

Re: Improve Your Numbers

@nomad I think we are in agreement that one should not ignore the value of state pensions in contemplating the finances of early retirement. With regard to your latter point: I don't think it's fair to characterise the possibility of a raid on private pension pots as 'totally groundless conjecture'....

Re: Improve Your Numbers

May I explain why I do include a figure for state pension in NW calculations? The NW calculation is to enable me to understand when I might be able to retire early. If I die younger than getting state pension age, the fact that I have ascribed a value to it will be irrelevant to me, because I'll be ...

The Vimes 'Boots' theory of socioeconomic unfairness – as applied to boots

There has been the occasional reference to the Vimes 'boots' theory (hereafter, the "Theory") in these forums over the past decade but there has not, I think, been an exploration of whether or not the Theory actually applies to boots. You will recall the theory from Terry Pratchett's Men at Arms : “...

@ Frita, wine is indeed a passion. I have been in love with the fermented juice of the grape since I was a boy. I started to buy wine seriously (i.e. in quantity with an eye to future drinking) when still a teenager. Good wine is the perfect combination of the intellectual and the sensual, it satisf...
