Re: My literal retirement scoreboard and the search for a new obsession in life

Did the elk you hit die at the scene?

34 elk x 200lbs of boneless meat = 6,800lbs of roadkill. Average cost per pound is $15.00?. That's approx $100K lying by the side of the road per annum. Have to think there is a thriving black market?

Re: My literal retirement scoreboard and the search for a new obsession in life

US News reported that there were 34 Elk collisions in Teton County in 2019 down from the 40's in two prior years but an increase to 28 Moose collisions, the majority occurring on Moose-Wilson Road. In all, 267 animals were hit in 2019. That's one per business day. Seems like a great place to own an ...

Re: What would you do to become "rich"?

@7W5 EM is pushing a future, but he's not pushing his stock. There's a difference between buying a Tesla or a trip to mars and buying TSLA shares, and Musk at least says the latter is overvalued. The same can't be said for Trump. Musk is Edison meets Barnum. Trump is Ponzi meets Barnum. I find Musk ...

Re: What would you do to become "rich"?

DeToqueville's explanation would be the lack of materialistic envy between Trump and his supporters. The relationship is more reflective of a benevolent king to his subjects than an elected official to his supporters. It's an aristocratic relationship, not a democratic relationship. The billionaire ...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3x1b_S6Qp2Q 90 minute discussion with Vitalik Buterin, founder of Ethereum. I am only 30 minutes through because these AI genius types are not exactly Robin Williams high on coke entertainment level interviews. Interesting discussion on "what is money" which leads to ...

The marble countertop successful suburban/urban professional finding paradise/utopia/peace of mind/escape in a remote or exotic area. It's a motif. Not a reality.

Re: Rural Property Acreage?

The whole idea is fiction. Aesop was writing/stealing about country mouse vs. city mouse in the 6th BC (C referring to Christ, not Coronavirus speaking to its timelessness). Its subsequent flare up of popularity always corresponds to the current political/cultural realities of a time. The Beatrix Po...

Re: Assessing Federal agents deployed to Portland

I don't think WW II pressured the Nazi party into the Holocaust. I think it provided cover.

Re: Assessing Federal agents deployed to Portland

After communism fell and records became assessable, distinguishing between Russia and Germany became harder - hence "Bloodlands." Russia calling itself Communist was a double edged sword. It justified German invasion and an unholy WW II alliance that led to the Cold War. Stalin was arguably the most...

Re: Assessing Federal agents deployed to Portland

If on hand you are going to dismiss fascism as "that's what the kids are saying these days" then you at minimum lose the pedagogical moment which I believe is important. If on the other hand, you really believe that the country is fascist, then you have to define fascism historically, semantically, ...

Re: Assessing Federal agents deployed to Portland

The claim was advanced that America is going fascist. You replied with a list of qualities entirely tangental to fascism that apply to America. None of these address the accusation of fascism. (Though it was a nice, well thought out list.) My comment was just my amusement that I'm watching people t...

Re: Assessing Federal agents deployed to Portland

@Riggerjack ' How in the world could my argument be interpreted as saying the US is the greatest fascist state ever? Please, explain. In fucking detail. And there is a difference between words evolving and words being drained of their original intent. For the rest of your elliptical nonsense, well, ...

Re: Assessing Federal agents deployed to Portland

Firing people, confiscating their property (not slaves), and keeping them in concentration camps for having anti-war opinions (Abraham Lincoln). And he goes down as the best president ever. I'm surprised no one has shot the Lincoln Memorial in its head. Even if you don't agree with it on a symbolic...

Re: Assessing Federal agents deployed to Portland

A polarized congress (Obama), attacks on the media (Nixon), refusal of financial transparency (who cares) voting rights questioned (JFK Chicago), scapegoating of minorities (hello), attacks on the judiciary (FDR, remember the New Deal stacker) I can fix it (everyone other than Carter?) Slave Trader ...

Re: Assessing Federal agents deployed to Portland

If you are going to employ a word like fascism, you have to demonstrate its applicability to the current situation and the historical use of the word is a necessary part of that discussion. No one objected to reepicheep voicing her concerns. What was objected to was the use of fascism to contextuali...

Re: Assessing Federal agents deployed to Portland

Well, whatever blueprint Stephen Miller has in his word doc, Trump better get moving on it because he may only have four months to execute 6 million people. Edit: An effective fascist by definition needs to be extremely competent. As they say, if you are going to be omnipotent, it helps to be omnisc...

Re: Assessing Federal agents deployed to Portland

First, they came for the Jews. What do you mean by that in context of what is happening now? And you do know that Hitler went for the Jews outside of Germany first. That is why technically Hitler is not a fascist. He destroyed states in order to create areas where there were no laws. And he didn't ...

Re: Assessing Federal agents deployed to Portland

I do not want to wake up in a country where one can't protest. I especially don't want to wake up in a country were one can't protest during patriotic celebrations. I also don't want to wake up in a country where if you disagree about what the protestors are protesting, you are considered a fascist....
