Re: Fox's Journey: Out of the Burrow

Big meh here. Write a private journal if you don't want legitimate criticism. I've been here a year and I know your type. Millennial (I am one) that wants everything for free.

Re: Fox's Journey: Out of the Burrow

You remind me of myself right out of University. The difference being I stuck with it and leveraged that into getting a job I liked. I think you need to lower your standards and/or work harder. Life isn't liberal arts school. Reading this journal is very frustrating for me. To add some substance.. w...

Re: Anyone else underwhelmed by the Olympics?

Y'all aren't fanatically attached to curling or hockey clearly. Last Winter Olympics I woke up at 4 AM to walk to a bar in -40 C and got hammered with my friends to watch Canada win the gold in hockey. Followed by a morning house party. Probably won't be the hype surrounding hockey without NHL playe...

I taped a quarter to the cover of my last day-late book before I dropped it into the return slot. I still have that fee outstanding.

I will note it was a hardcover. I'm not a monster.

Re: Differences in Eastern/Western computer game preferences, if any?!

My gut check, backed up with mild google research, is that the "West (EU/NA/RU)" prefers FPS and that the "East" (SK,CN,JP) prefers MOBAS/RTS. I think MMORPGS are universal in type but change in style/game-play based on region. An Eastern MMO will have heavy anime influence (Black Desert Online) whi...

Re: Differences in Eastern/Western computer game preferences, if any?!

That'll depend on how you measure popularity and what your end goal of the question is. Money spent, streaming audience, concurrent players, longevity of a title (Starcraft 1 in South Korea) are all things to look at. Are we only talking online games? Mobile games? Personally, to measure popularity ...

Re: Balance between Health, Money, and Time at the Supermarket

When I was a kid I had a part time job (2 shifts/week) at an organic grocery store to pay for a school trip. It saved my entire family 25% on organic food and I got to take home anything expired for free. I have actually considered doing this as part of my ERE.

Re: 2018 Goals/Resolutions Thread

This reads more like a to-do list. 1. Buy used or build a kegerator. Stop bottling beer. 2. Learn to ski tour. If I like it, advance gear quality. 3. Go hiking to those huts near -redacted- for 3+ days. Figure out a trail. 4. Move to Denver. 5. Only pick dividend all-star or dog value play stocks. L...

2017 Financials Some important notes reading this chart and the year: -I take my net worth Jan 1st 2017 and Jan 1st 2018, look at my net income for the year and figure out expenses from the difference. According to this method I saved 70% of my income this year !? Holy cow that's insane. To get mon...

Re: How do you come up with a life plan?

Great questions for Christmas Eve :) I struggle with these too but I will try.. How do you come up with a 1 year plan or 5 year plan etc? Visualize what you want your life to look like in 1 or 5 years. Have conflicting visions? Me too. I think the solution is to have several acceptable plans and the...

Re: Opportunity to move to Denver

Thanks for the replies! From my own research and the replies here, Denver seems just like Calgary*. *if it were further south and doubled in population. @The_Bowme. Beer is on me! I'm hoping to get down there for work in the new year regardless if I end up moving. I can PM you when I figure out deta...

Re: Could use some money advice

I agree with James. Get a good credit card to use as your emergency fund and dump all available cash into student loans. I keep 500 cash in an account in case I need it to jump on a Craiglist transaction on short notice. Otherwise minimize cash. Relevant... I'm quite literally currently waiting for ...

Re: The life and times of ... distracted_at_work

Really quick update from mobile in a ski town bar .. Long story short I drove my car into a snowbank and burned the clutch out in my attempts to get out. $1500+ hotel, taxi and tow later... I might get home. Thankfully don't need an emergency fund when you save 65% per month. Fell in love with a gir...

Re: Opportunity to move to Denver

Never heard of a city tax, thanks for the heads up. Similarly, never heard of Captain Capitalism, from his own description of his book I googled: it's for anybody who is either stuck, listless, or directionless in life and cannot see any other way out I probably don't need to read it? I'd certainly ...

Re: Opportunity to move to Denver

Thanks for the recco. I have read all the MMM blogs from day 1 so that example is certainly at the forefront of my mind. That thought spurred me to check out tax rates.. my total tax rate would drop from 33.5% to 29.6%. Not huge but something. Rent looks comparable. Food, alcohol and consumer goods ...

Opportunity to move to Denver

Wanted to ask the group what they thought of a move from Calgary, Canada to Denver, USA. Things are moving really quickly now and I'm about to be mostly incommunicado from the internet for 3 days on a ski trip which doesn't help anything. The details would be doing essentially the same job I'm doing...
